After enjoying But That Was Yesterday so much, I jumped at the chance to review this Kathleen Eagle reprint, originally published in 2000. Although I didn't love it quite as much, it was another intelligent, deftly characterized story, and confirms my feeling that Eagle is my newest favorite author.

All his life, Clay Keogh has given undemanding, unconditional love and care to anyone who's needed it: abandoned horses, neglected kids, his firebrand half-brother Kole Kills Crow, and most of all, Savannah Stephens. Clay, Kole and Savannah had grown up together, but although she had a unspoken crush on the much older Kole, Clay was the one she experimented with, the boy who was totally trustworthy and totally devoted to her sexual pleasure.

Years later, Savannah has returned home to the Wyoming town they grew up in, with a young daughter, an unspecified past illness, and a bad case of depression. And she's looking for Clay to be what he's always been to her -- and absolutely nothing more.

"She needed him to serve one specific part of her, satisfy one want, and she wanted him to serve the way he always had. Unselfishly."

And though Clay has been married and divorced since Savannah left town for a modeling career, he's as unable to resist her as ever.

"No more protests, no more questions. He had always had only one answer for her, and that was yes."

This sounds like a story about a selfish woman and a wimpy guy who's too good to be true -- and I did worry at first that it might turn out that way. But there's quite a bit more to it. Savannah was not exactly ill: she had breast cancer, treated with chemotherapy and a mastectomy. She's gone from being a woman paid to be beautiful to being someone who feels scarred, ugly, and full of death. And she's terrified to reveal her new self to Clay. Even after impulsively marrying him, she refuses to ever share a bed with him, pushing him away by brutally telling him, "If you want to fuck, we'll fuck." Nothing more.

Savannah is one of the most challenging heroines I've ever encountered in a romance novel, not because she's deliberately cruel -- she isn't -- but because she's in such a funk. She's so depressed and anxious that she can't even take very good care of her daughter, thereby breaking the number one romance heroine commandment, Thou Shalt Always Be a Perfect Mother. Eagle manages to pull this off because everything that Savannah goes through rings so true. It also helps that Eagle has a lively, quirky writing style that keeps the story moving and the depression from getting too depressing.

Clay is an interesting character in his own right, especially when he starts to break down under the strain of the situation. He tries valiantly to believe that taking care of Savannah is enough for him.

"Didn't matter whether she wanted him or not, as long as she needed him. A person could do without what he wanted, but needs were different… Being needed was a good thing. A man with skilled hands and a strong back was sorely needed just about any place you looked these days. Clay had all kinds of work to do."

This passage is particularly heartbreaking, because Clay actually has a very bad back, aggravated by the farrier work he does. In this moment, he's denying all of his own needs to think of himself as a provider.

Clay's warm heart makes him very lovable -- especially the way he accepts both his ex-wife's children and Savannah's daughter as his own. But he's not perfect, and he may be too hooked on being needed.

There's so much to this story, I could fill pages and pages with quotes -- but I should probably leave something for readers to discover for themselves. I'll just say that everything resolves in an organic feeling way. Also, despite Savannah's depression and body image issues, there are several sensual and evocative love scenes, written in language that is blunt but not crude.

Incidentally, the character of Kole never actually appears in the book, but nonetheless makes quite an impression. His story, You Never Can Tell, is also scheduled to be reprinted by Bell Bridge Books in multiple formats.

I loved this book. It gave me insight into a modern-day culture I wasn't that familiar with, and showed me how two people from totally different backgrounds can not only love and respect each other, but also blend their cultures almost seamlessly. This is a very realistic story--about a man who made a terrible mistake and tries in every way that he can to redeem himself. It's also the journey in her heart that his wife must take in order to forgive him. Eagle blended the threads of that journey with an actual ceremonial journey that was filled with hardship. I truly enjoyed everything about this book. The troubled daughter. The injured mother. And the man who lost them. Although he has made extreme changes in his life, can that ever be enough to heal the wounds that he inflicted on those he loves?

Well, all of us make mistakes. And this story was handled by Ms. Eagle in a realistic, believable way. From the start, my heart hurt for the man and his wife. And I totally understood their daughter. Beautiful book!

The dialogue and conversations made me feel like they were speaking in "inside jokes" or like when someone says you had to be there to get it. Ugh. I cannot say anything nice so I will refrain from saying anything.

On a positive note, I found numerous words to add the the Words that make you Cringe thread. In just one scene, you have the following gems:

to tangle in the bog that grounded his erection. She found the the soft eggs in that nest.. They were both slick as seals
his huge hard penis parting her like a letter opener nicking the delicate... (OUCH!) teasing her within the puddle..

His tongue was a tickler, a taster, a mover and shaker.

..until he fully filled her needy, raw-edged pocket.

This wasn't my favorite book by Eagle, that would be This Time Forever. For one thing, the heroine is recovering from breast cancer and is pretty depressed at the beginning of the book. I thought her feelings were well written, but let's face it that kind of thing isn't fun. Still, I enjoyed the story quite a bit. I've only read a few books by this author but I found them interesting with not the same old plot.

How odd that I would choose this book at this time of my life. It's about a woman recovering from breast cancer surgery and treatment, something I will be going through within the next few weeks. This was a Kindle freebee, a romance about a woman coming back to her hometown and getting together with her "best friend", a romance. The teaser never mentioned anything about breast cancer and as I got past the first couple of chapters I realized what Savannah was going through....I've been there twice already, the first time when I was 40.
This was a beautifully written story, very true to life after cancer. The fear of dying, the self doubt about your sexuality, feeling ugly. I was as lucky as Savannah when it came to friends and family who loved me enough to pull me back and I can only wish the same to all the women who are going through this.
The story is not preachy or only about cancer, it is a love story filled with a wonderful cast of characters.
I highly recommend this to everyone looking for a story with a HEA, it is very well written and I'm looking for more from this author.

Honestly I was not very thrilled with this book. It was so depressing it left me in a funk. Savannah is in such a depression that it is hard to enjoy her. And Clay is so love sick and wanting to take care of everything and everyone he sees that he becomes almost pathetic to me. While I can understand how some people would enjoy this book it was just too sad for me. I am the girl who likes a strong alpha male and Clay to me was not that at all. And while he may be the kind of guy you want to be in a relationship with when the going gets hard he is not the kind of guy I want to read about. He most certainly falls into the catagory of having “white knight” syndrome. and Savannah was hard for me to deal with. Yes she has gone through alot that has turned her world upside down but she has survived it but she does not act like it. She has left everything for someone else to take care of including her daughter. And I am not sure she has moved on from loving Clay’s older brother and it makes me wonder why he would fight for her at all.

As I said I can probably see why some people may enjoy it and if you were in a depressed mood and read it maybe by the end you would not be so down but having not started depressed it was hard to rally from this book. It is very slow paced and written different then I am used to (maybe because it is a reprint from 2000) so maybe that was a factor. Maybe I would have enjoyed it at another point in my life but not right now.

I love Ms Eagle's writing, but this one...it was difficult to like the female character despite all she's gone through, and the way she kept hurting the male character. And, the fact he kept putting up with it.

Kathleen Eagle is a superb storyteller who creates compelling, complex characters, and The Last Good Man is one of her best books. It has lost none of its power in the dozen years since it was first published. Eagle’s gift for characterization can be seen in the secondary characters such as Clay’s mother, his ex-wife, Savannah’s aunt, and Savannah’s hairdresser friend—credible mixes of strengths and weaknesses with pieces of the lives that make them who they are revealed. Even characters who never actually appear in the book such as Kole Kills Crow and Savannah’s New York friend Heather emerge as real, believable personalities. Claudia may seem improbably mature to some readers, but anyone who has ever watched a small child of a single parent caught in physical or mental illness will recognize the fierce protectiveness and caretaking that can become part of the child’s nature.

Clay is wonderful, one of my all-time favorite heroes. Hardworking, competent, sexy, and nurturing with an always tender touch for the wounded and needy, human or animal, he is the man the title evokes. But he is no impossible dream. He can be angry and impatient, he can make foolish choices, and he can find it difficult to articulate his feelings. Eagle reveals enough about his past for the reader to understand that his need to take care of others is an essential and innate part of the person Clay is. Like many natural givers, Clay must learn to accept the gifts of others.

Savannah, despite her illness, is a difficult character to like for the first part of the book. She is totally self-absorbed, even to the point of avoiding her responsibilities to her child. But as the reader learns more about her and realizes why appearance is so important to her, why the changes cancer surgery have wrought in her body have so devastated her, and why she is convinced that she holds death within her, she becomes more sympathetic. Watching her grow and take responsibility for herself and others becomes a joy.

Kathleen Eagle is a gifted, intelligent writer. I highly recommend her books. If you are an Eagle fan, you know her books are definitely worth a reread. If you’ve never read her, The Last Good Man is a great place to start. I suggest you also look for You Never Can Tell, the story of Kole Kills Crow and Savannah’s friend, New York journalist Heather Reardon, which Bell Bridge Books also plans to reissue. And I’m hoping for reissues including electronic editions of my favorites by Eagle—Reason to Believe and What the Heart Knows.

Savannah Stephens was the "one that got away" from Clay Keogh. Savannah was a beautiful child who participated in beauty pageants and a gorgeous woman who left the small town of Sunbonnet, Wyoming to continue her career as a model. When calamity hits in the form of breast cancer, she abandons her career as an underwear model and returns home with her tail between her legs. She turns into a recluse and is pulled out a inch at a time by Clay who never stopped loving her.

This is a very sweet romance with a tortured heroine who simply cannot return to the real world until she learns to love herself again. Her daughter Claudia actually steals the show here and brings Clay to his knees and Savannah out of her shell. A beautiful love story that will bring tears to your eyes.

Beautifully and thoughtfully written with interesting (albeit frustrating) characters and witty dialogue.

That said, I feel the weight of the story warranted a more substantial ending (too abrubt for me), otherwise I would have rated it 5 stars.

The Last Good Man is a heartfelt, emotional story that blends romance with themes of healing, family, and second chances. Kathleen Eagle’s writing is warm and vivid, pulling you into the lives of characters who feel real and relatable. The setting and cultural details are beautifully done, adding depth to the story without ever slowing it down.
I really enjoyed the chemistry between the leads—their connection felt genuine, built on more than just attraction. The emotional baggage they carried gave the romance weight, and watching them work through it together was both moving and satisfying.
The only reason I didn’t give this a full five stars is that a few parts felt a little slow, and I wished for more tension or surprise in the middle of the book. Still, the ending wrapped things up in a touching way that left me smiling.
Overall, this is a strong, engaging romance with heart, and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves stories about redemption, love, and finding strength in unexpected places.

Oh Clay my poor baby you deserved so much better. Even thought I felt sorry for Savannah, she was pretty hard to like. I understand she’s a complex woman who’s been through a lot which made her severely depressed. But I hate how Clay was a lovesick fool till the very end. Taking whatever little crumps he could get from her.

I guess Savannah did adopt his dream of rescuing horses and try to make it profitable to help him out. But I can’t help but feel like she took her damn sweet time coming around. Which happened at the very last chapter. And all I could tell myself ‘Is that really it?’

Old Friends

Savannah and Clay had grown up together in this small town in Wyoming. She had went off to New York to be a model then ended up coming back home with a daughter. Clay has stayed home working the family ranch and shoeing horses.
When old friends come together they help each other heal their wounds. A good story told by a great storyteller.

another wonderful, profound story of Kathleen Eagle, The story is beautiful, the characters so multilayered and beautiful. I loved their friendship, his love, and devotion, her fears, and commitments. I loved the "secondary characters" like the mother in law, Claudia, the shadow of the unreachable, mysterious big brother. A jewel.

I needed a light & fast read after 8 weeks in CT. This horse ranch romance includes the conflicts of being a single mother, cancer survivor, caregiver to horses. Interesting read. I always enjoy a "western" romance!!!

The story of these two characters is both sweet and sad, but to follow their journey to love and respect is heartwarming. Breast cancer is real, and to hear it spoken openly and honestly is truly remarkable.

The Last Good man by Kathleen Eagle
3 stars I did not like some of the language and losts of sex scenes. I liked the story line and the characters. Also enjoyed the horses and the message about breast cancer. Would read more from Kathleen Eagle especailly if its about Kole. Savannah Stephens came back to her home town. She was hiding upstairs of her Aunt's grocery store. Savannah was worn down and broke. She quit working as a model when she became a mom and before she went back she got breast cancer. Savannah has the cutest 6 year old named claudia who was worried about her mom how sick she got. She takes care of her the best she can. Everyone is surprised to see her daughter, even her Aunt did not know about her. Though one look at her face and lots of people guessed who the father was. Clay keogh owned a ranch with his mother. He brought a lot of horses that were on the way to be canned dog food. He works on the side shoeing horses and floating their teeth. He has an ex-wife who had 3 kids from different fathers. He misses the kids, he still sees them. Clay meets Claudia outside her Aunt's general store and watches Clay shoe a horse. He recongizes his brothers eyes on her face. She tells him her mother is the most beautiful mother in the world. He guess that must be Savannah. Clay and Savannah used to be good friends they would follow his half brother when ever they would let them Kole. Savannah had a crush on Kole. Clay had a crush on Savannah. Clay had not seen Kole for years. He escaped from Prison and still was wanted. At least now he knew he was alive at least a few years ago. Clay and Savannah meet up at thier secret cave late at night. Neither one new the other was going to be thier. They have sex but Savannah won't take off her shirt or let Clay tough her breasts. Savannah does not sleep during the night but sleeps a lot during the day. Claudia hears her Aunt and mom talk about going to the doctor that she was not going to let her die like her mom. Claudia cries and Clay is thier and promises her that he will make her mom go to the doctor. They came back from the doctors married and everyone is a little upset with them for eloping. Thier are a lot of issues with bodies and self worth from different women and a lot of good advice. Thier are tough times with low cattle prices with ranchers are all tighting their belts. I was given this ebook to read in exchange for honest review from Netgalley. 05/01/2012 PUB Bell Bridge Books

Savannah has returned to her home town after many years of being away modeling and being famous. While all the residents in her town contemplated why she was back, Savannah wasn't talking. In fact, she was staying in and rarely venturing out. When Clay finds out that Savannah is back he can hardly resist going over to her old family house to see if she's there. Savannah and Clay have been friends forever and Clay has secretly been in love with her for many years. Despite Savannah's reluctant desire to share her story Clay still feels drawn to her and resolves to figure out why Savannah is back and if he can help her get over her problems.

I liked Savannah's character, she was intense at times but really she was just doing the best she could with her life. I understood her fear about sharing what happened to her, especially with Clay. She definitely held herself back as much as she could but I liked that Clay stuck with it and kept pushing her when she needed to be pushed. Their relationship was really sweet although I did find it strange how Savannah had sex with him so soon after returning to town. But other than that, I liked watching their relationship blossom over time. I also liked seeing Claudia and Clay together. Even from the first scene of Claudia watching Clay change the horses shoe was adorable and it just got better as the book went on.

The reason I didn't give this one 3 stars was that overall the pace of the book was pretty slow and at times I felt like things were being dragged along. It probably could have also been a bit shorter, I think it was unnecessarily long with passages added in just to bump up the page number.

I might explore this author more as this was the first book I've read by her. If her other books are similar, this might be one to pick up when I'm feeling very sappy and in need of a cry.

Kathleen Eagle's "The Last Good Man" was one good powerful novel that I have read on this subject in quite a while. I thought this author did a good job in handling the subject of breast cancer and even how the horses were brought into this storyline. The story consist of a woman(Savannah Stephens) who was a former model, recovering recovering from breast cancer surgery and treatment and how, what and why life went for her after she returned to her hometown in Sunbonnet, Wyoming with her daughter(Claudia).

In this read there was also a love story that will unfold of how Clay had loved Savannah since they were teens. Clay was a very wonderful, caring and protective man. Will Savannah and Clay be able to come to terms with all the changes that have gone on in their lives now that she has returned home? This is where I say you must pick up this read "The Last Good Man" to find out!

The characters were all likable...starting with Savannah, Clay, Aunt Billie, Kole, Heather to Claudia...only naming a few that did present a wonderful read.

"The Last Good Man" was a good read that gives a good view into the life of a woman who was going through breast cancer. I didn't find this a page turner but indeed a good read that I would recommend.

Savannah Stephens comes back home to Sunbonnet Wyoming, after years of living a glamorous life in New York. In addition to returning home, she has a sixth year old daughter named claudia with an unknown father. The only safe haven she has is her Aunt Billie who raised her from birth,, as well has her childhood friends that she left behind. There are two childhood friends that she never forgotten: Keith and Clay are two friends that she did everything with, and they shared a lot of great moments that Stephen's cherishes. Clay always had a crush on Savannah, and once he finds out that she is back in town, he tries everything to get back what he lost. It has been years since Stephens, has seen him, and he has changed drastically for the better, she soon finds her love for him uncontrollable, and the passion she feels is undeniable. While Clay tends to horses, his love for Savanah grows, but he is oblivious to a secret that Savannah is hiding, not only from him but from his loved one as well. This is a very romantic, passionate book about love, lost and regret, I look forward to reading more books from Katherine Eagle.

I enjoyed this contemporary romance. The heroine, Savannah, carried quite a bit of baggage, but I sympathized with her and found her to be likeable. The hero, Clay, was a wonderful, protective, caring man. I thought the addition of Savannah's daughter, Claudia, to the story, was a good touch. She was precocious, loveable, and her interactions with Clay were sweet and entertaining. I liked the characters and the story in this book.

Savannah Stephens left home to become a famous model. When she returns years later, down on her luck with a young daughter in tow, Clay Keogh, who always loved her, is there for her again. Savannah's daughter looks so much like Clay's older half brother that everyone knows whose daughter she is, but Clay offers his support without question. Clay is there to offer his encouragement and devotion while Savannah comes to terms with her new self and new life.

I thought this was a good story with sympathetic characters. It kept me interested, and I liked seeing how the relationship between Savannah and Clay developed and grew. I received this book as an ARC through Netgalley.

Loved the book it was a sweet Love story of a man that has Loved the same girl since they were teens and when she comes back home even though he doesn't know what brought her back or what's she's hiding at first he still wants to take care of her and her daughter which from 1st sight he know's is his half brother Koles child. Savannah struggles with what I would think all or most breast cancer survivors struggle with a feeling of not being whole or attractive and depression. Thinking how can anyone love you when your no longer the person you were before. It made me think of what a dear friend most have gone through when she had to lose her breast to cancer. The story show's that with a little work on both parts and patience Love will conker all. I would definitely recommend the book

This book carry the message of trust between two persons who loves each other. Savannah, who was a model found herself back to where she came from and unlike before, she is bringing along her daughter, Claudia. Clay who is Savannah's good friend and who have been in love for as long as he remember, is determined to find the actual cause for her return to the town where they grew up.

I like Clay very much. He loves unconditionally; towards Savannah, and his ex step chidrens. It is hard to find as such in the reality but it is rather nice to know that i can found one in this book. ;) Overall, the book is an easy to read book ;)
