Florence Crutchfield spent the last few years in an orphanage but her great-uncle and great-aunt have found her at last. At first she's excited to have family again...but things quickly sour.
"Go along then, Florence. ... pray you'll be happy in your new home."
The more time Florence spends at Crutchfield Hall, the more she is convinced that someone (or something?) is watching her. Waiting for her. Always out of reach, always teasing her. Taunting her.
A chill raced up and down my spine, and my scalp prickled. "Is someone there?" I whispered fearfully.
I heard a faint sound like muffled laughter.
But things keep happening, and soon Florence becomes more than afraid. She's terrified.
"Neither your uncle nor your aunt wants to hear stories about children you may or may not have seen in the garden. ... You hear me, miss. Keep that talk to yourself."
