Un paradiso abitato da diavoli
Che Napoli sia un paradiso abitato da diavoli – cioè da uomini «di poco ingegno, maligni, cattivi e pieni di tradimento», come sosteneva il Piovano Arlotto – è un detto che dal Medioevo in poi ha goduto di vasta fortuna ma che è ormai, per comprensibili ragioni, caduto in disuso. E solo un uomo come Croce, in cui la profonda passione per Napoli e le sue memorie non è mai disgiunta da quella politica e civile, poteva arrischiarsi a riesumare e riproporre quell’antico biasimo – un biasimo che è bene considerare «verissimo per far che sia sempre men vero». Come un cicerone dalla sorprendente dottrina, affabile ma mai conciliante, Croce ci fa scoprire il volto segreto o scancellato della sua città: le vestigia della dominazione spagnola e le vite smodate, ora truci ora fastose, dei soldati che vi furono di stanza; gli scomparsi «seggi» e l’epopea dei lazzari, fanaticamente devoti a san Gennaro e al re; il vocio assordante dei venditori e l’incanto della vita negli anni di «feconda preparazione e semplice gaiezza» allorché a Santa Lucia, su lunghi banchi di legno protetti da lembi di vela, si mangiavano i frutti di mare e furoreggiava «Te voglio bene assaie, / e tu non pienze a me!...»; sorprendenti personaggi come don Dima Ciappa, «religiosissimo uomo» che fece uccidere il giovane Carlo Capecelatro, suo rivale in amore; e gemme come il palazzo Cellamare a Chiaia, dove si sedimentano secoli di storia, di vita artistica e letteraria.

After the incident, he inherited fortune of his family and ably lived the rest in relative leisure, which enabled him to devote a great deal of time.
Benedetto Croce served as the minister of education. He openly resisted participation in World War I. He openly hated the party till his death in 1952.

Inizialmente un pó noioso, fa un escursus di nomi di colonnelli e soldati spagnoli in quel di Napoli, ma alla fine diventa interessante scoprire come era la città dal 1600 e come si è evoluta fino ai giorni nostri attraverso gli avvenimenti storici.
