Grey Colton is the judge of Comanche County (not sure which level of court he is in, possibly the lowest court level, as the book describes him handing out sentencing, but not magistrate). One very wintery night, a very pregnant defense attorney named Kelly was headed home when she realized she had locked her keys in the car. Kelly returned to the courthouse to see if the janitor could metal-coat-hanger her car and get it open. She ran into Judge Colton, ran into the women's bathroom, and then, sensing that something was wrong, Judge Colton checked on her. She had gone into active labor and gave birth to her daughter in the Judge's office.

Thus began a fast-paced love affair between Kelly and Grey. Kelly recognized Grey's ambitions and the skeletons in her closet might prevent him from moving to the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, and that drove them apart. She dealt with the skeletons and then came home to find Grey on her porch. They got back together.
