David Charles Henshaw Austin was a British rose breeder and author. This is not a pruning guide but a descriptive guide to the roses. It was one of the first books I ever used in designing my garden because it lists many classic rose cultivars. Austin relates the quality, and his preferences, regarding the larger and climbing roses, noting negative qualities as well as positive. My copy is a well thumbed reference because people often want suggestions for good cultivars.

Here is a book full of background knowledge about the variety of roses. Plus we get hundreds of types of individual roses to read about. Plus it is magnificently illustrated. If it has a fault it is written for the British audience, but who cares knowledge is universal.
