He knows plotting a diamond heist may be considered unusual behavior...

But Alex isn't feeling very normal when his unscrupulous boss kicks him to the curb. Meeting Juli doesn't do much to restore normalcy to Alex's life, but it sure is exhilerating!

4 ½ stars. The first half is lots of laughing for me (which is rare). The second half is a light pleasant read.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
During the first 150 pages I was laughing/chuckling a lot. At one time I almost wondered if I was drinking and didn’t know it because I was laughing so much and feeling giddy. Too many contemporary romance books that claim to be funny don’t make me laugh. This book did! It’s silly funny little things as this group of people are interacting and deciding what to do.

The last half of the book was not as funny, but it was fine. There were none of my pet peeves. It was above average for light suspense and romance. There is one sex scene which is done without naming any body parts. There are also some passionate kissing scenes.

The characters are fun. Julie is very smart, does impressive things, and does nothing stupid. She is attracted to Alex early on, but he’s reluctant. Alex doesn’t think he should be in a relationship because he has no money, no job, and is about to steal something. He’s a good leader for the group and makes practical rational decisions. Cody is a former pro football player who loves to cook. The food he prepares sounds like 5-star restaurant elegance – it’s kind of funny. Phyllis is a body builder in her mid 50s. I don’t think she has ever had a boyfriend or ever been kissed. She is secretly attracted to Jake.

This is the author’s first book. I hope she does another.

STORY BRIEF:
Julie has had many different jobs, never holding one for more than a few months. Her Uncle Frank died. In his will he asked Julie to take his urn of cremated ashes to the Caribbean and scatter them in the sea near a specific island. He leaves her enough money to pay for the trip. Julie purchased a ticket for a charter boat. She fears being seasick so she takes anti-nausea medicine an hour before the boat departs. The drug causes her to be confused and sleepy. She goes to the wrong boat and falls asleep in one of the cabins.

Alex, Jake, Phyllis, and Cody worked for Kranston Shipping Enterprises. The owner of the company Tom recently fired them and caused them to lose their pensions. Alex knows that Tom has illegal shipping activities going on with a shipment of diamonds arriving soon at a Caribbean island. He and his group rent a boat with plans to be at that island when the ship arrives and to steal the diamonds. They have been traveling for several hours when they discover the stowaway Julie sleeping onboard. There is no time to return her, so they have to decide what to do with her.

DATA:
Story length: 328 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: none to mild. Number of kissing and/or sex scenes: 4. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 15. Setting: current day mostly at sea in the Caribbean with two short scenes in Oregon and Florida. Copyright: 2011. Genre: humorous romance with light suspense.

This was very different. A 37-year-old job-hopping heroine looking to bring her wacky uncle's ashes to their last resting place in the ocean outside a Caribbean island. A 42-year-old former VP looking for revenge on his old employer as well as getting his nest-egg back.

The setting is wonderful, it really made me want to go on a Caribbean vacation. The sidekicks are also unusual and interesting. It is a bit of slapstick to this comical romance, but it is done with such a deft hand that I really don't mind.

I wasn't entirely sure of how things were going to play out until the end, at one point I actually thought their was a traitor in the good pirates' midst.
Now that I think about it, this book would actually make a really fun, romantic comedy.

It’s so nice to discover another author - and a debut author at that! - who writes humor that truly makes you laugh. It’s not easy to do. There are very few writers out there who have had success at it. Remember Tawna Fenske’s name. She’s going to become a favorite of a lot of you readers out there. If she doesn’t, you need to readjust your funny bone.

Juli Flynn’s latest responsibility is to scatter her Uncle Frank’s ashes in the Virgin Islands, a task she’s really not eager to perform. She has a job. She doesn’t have enough money for such a venture. And she’s a tad scared of the ocean. Well, all of that is sorta true. She’s been laid off and Uncle Frank left enough to fund the trip. So Juli just has to conquer her fear of the sea. But being a good niece, she sets off to St. John and makes the necessary arrangements to take her uncle to his final resting place.

Alex and his work colleagues have just received their pink slips - after twenty years on the job. Now there’s no retirement fund, he’s going to continue to be that going-nowhere guy his ex-fiance always said he was. But the more he and his friends talk, the more interesting the imparted information becomes, and Alex begins hatching a plan to get both revenge against their employer and enough retirement money for all of them. It only requires they become modern-day pirates on the open sea.

And this is where Alex and Juli meet, in a bar in the Virgin Islands, each waiting for the next day when their individual adventures begin. Having said not a dozen words between them when sharing a table at the bar, Juli, out of the blue, prompts Alex to join her in pretending they’re married to try to win the $1,000 prize in The Newlywed Game, island style. At first Alex is hesitant - he doesn’t know this woman, after all - but they come up with a plan on how to answer questions, toss out a few endearments to one another, and take their places on the stage. And this is where I laughed my butt off. I have to share Juli’s logic in playing the game with you and hopefully do it in a way you’ll follow:

“The first questions is number one. That means if it’s a multiple-choice question, you go with the first one. If the answer has to be a random word, make it start with the first letter of the alphabet. If the answer has to be a number —”

“Right, I get it,” Alex said…”I just don’t think we should —”

“For the second question, we go with two. The answer is two or starts with a B or —”

And so it goes and suddenly they’re ready to begin. The part that made me laugh for a good fifteen minutes, if not more? Well, after missing the first question, their luck begins to turn with a question for the wives: What is your husband’s most prized possession? It’s the B question, so Alex goes with boat. Typical for a man. Juli thinks so too, and the crowd goes wild. Now they switch places and the husbands get to answer.

Where is your wife’s favorite place to be kissed?

It starts with a C.

I couldn’t help myself and the laughter wouldn’t stop. Alex’s thought process goes through a few inappropriate C places for their circumstances, and I’m still laughing so hard at that point I can hardly keep reading. What does he eventually come up with? Heh. You have to read the book to find out so you can laugh like I did. That’s just an example, though the best, of the humor in this book, along with such different writing that I’ve read in a long time.

An example of that is, after Juli inadvertently in a sea sickness-drugged state ends up on Alex’s boat, thinking it’s her cruise ship the next day, they hustle and tussle with the coincidence of her being there and have to deal with her illness. But she’s optimistic enough to think she might like being on the water.

Alex raised his eyebrow at her. “Thirty minutes ago you said you’d rather shave your legs with a carrot peeler than spend another hour on this ship.”

That’s so true to Juli’s character that I laughed quite a bit again. Then later when Juli plays pirate - all without really knowing that’s actually what Alex and his crew are doing - her creativeness at using a black thong had me giggling all over again. Yes, you have to read the book to know what she actually does! When Juli and the only other lady in the group, Phyllis, try to delay the bad guys so Alex and the men can do their pirating, Phyllis confounds the bartender by announcing they have some coochie for sale. Just typing that makes me laugh all over again. That scene is absolutely hilarious. And when Alex and Juli are enjoying the night and the ocean from their hotel balcony, some hanky-panky begins on the beach below them, the likes of which I don’t think anyone has ever read before. Alex even goes so far as to say,

“Do you think we should take notes? Because a lot of this is new to me.”

He’s a forty-two-year-old man and I’m sure not much is new to him, but even so, those body-less voices taught both of them a thing or two.

Okay, enough for now with the humor, but it is the best thing about the book. Along with the sizzle between Alex and Juli. They come so close a number of times of getting naked together, but something always puts a stop to their going all the way. Yes, a few are actually funny. But when they finally come together, after some sensual foot-playing antics on Juli’s part (one of those read the book things again), they two are more than ready to do the deed. And do they do it. In the shower, bent across a desk, and a few other places. All hot and steamy, sexy, and oh-so-fun.

In the midst of all of this, there are suspicions running around on both sides. They want to know who Juli really is. She wants to know what they’re up to. But no one’s talking early on. It’s even at this point we learn why Juli has always felt alone and out of place. But that’s one of the things that eventually makes Alex love her. Even the bad guys are hilarious in this book. Looks are definitely deceiving. Alex’s plan doesn’t go as envisioned, everything seems to go wrong, but the one constant is Juli, and finally she feels as though she belongs somewhere the first time in her life.

This is a book you have to pick up soon. It tickles me when a debut author does so well, and this author has tickled me from the beginning. I look forward to her future books.

Nemesis'in son zamanlarda çıkardığı kapaklar şahane!

Funny, witty, truly entertaining, even the idiotic dialogs of some of the secondary characters made me smile.
HERO is now the leader of small group of recently fired coworkers who are planning to steal an illegal cargo from his former boss. When a accidentally stowaway is found in their ship in their way to their objective, he can’t help but be attracted to this unusual woman although he doesn’t trust her one bit.

Aahahahaahaaaa çok iyiydi ya ! Çok iyi ve çok saçma ! Harika bir komedi tufanı ! :)):)):))

Tawna Fenske will delight readers with this rollicking romantic comedy. This is the story of Juli, genius extraordinaire who has come to the tropics to carry out the last wishes of her dear Uncle Frank. She meets Alex, a recently unemployed businessman who is determined to recoup his stolen pension with a harebrained pirating scheme. Unwittingly joining him and his quirky crew in their quest, Juli finds in Alex a perfect foil for her crazy antics, if she can convince Alex to trust her with his body and his heart.

I thoroughly enjoyed this madcap adventure! The tropical locations were well researched, as were the nautical scenes, giving a realism to the reader as if they were sailing away with the crew. The cast of characters were wonderfully portrayed, from the main couple to the rest of the Pirate crew ( Jake, Phyllis and "Cookie"), as well as other secondary characters. There were many scenes of laugh out loud dialogue (and thoughts) added to the mix. To top off the fun, there was also the romance between Juli and Alex - simmering sexual tension between them that developed into a steamy relationship and from there, a real emotional attachment.

This is a perfect beach read or lazy Sunday afternoon pick-me-up. I'll definitely be looking for more from this author. She has a real handle on writing romantic comedies that are truly satisfying. 5 stars!

The good thing about spending all day at the water park is that it forces me to read from my paper TBR.

The bad thing is running into books like these.

Alex has been cheated out of his pension. He and his friends devise a way to get what was taken from them by a little piracy on the high seas.

Juli has to spread her uncle's ashes at sea. Only she winds up on a ship other than the one she chartered.

Full of silly characters, unbelievable situations and loads of "fun" coincidences the humor in this tale mostly fell flat for me. It didn't help that Juli was my least favorite type of character - the brilliant ditz. The book did have some charm but it was hidden behind all the hoopla.

Tawna's debut is as quirky, funny, and warm-hearted as she is. Also, Alex is so totally hot that I do NOT condone reading this novel (at least the last third of it) in public. Making Waves is a fun, insane tale that I wanted to be a part of as much as Juli did, and if you're looking for something to make you laugh (while fanning yourself) make sure to pick this one up.

Oh Em Gee, guys....this book was FREAKING HILARIOUS!

Like the kind of hilarity that would result if Tina Fey's off-the-wall descriptions of life joined forces with Chelsea Handler's awkward sexuality and the two wrote a book about white-collar-employees turning into a band of pirates.

Sounds too good to be true? Well it isn't.

The female MC is named Juli and she's a thirty-seven year old woman who's had more careers than my entire graduating class - combined. Her family thinks she needs to settle down with one thing, but they don't seem to be too hard on her. When Juli's uncle Frank dies, he requests that Juli spread his ashes in a specific spot in the caribbean ocean. Being that Juli is terrified of water, it doesn't really sound like a great idea, but she decides to cart the ugliest urn ever (seriously, it sported copulating dolphin decorations) down south.

Oh, and Juli has a secret. And, frankly, it's a pretty great one. I swear that you'll never guess. Well, I didn't anyway (so don't go all "I did," on me, okay?).

Meanwhile, in another part of America, a band of four corporate employees find themselves without jobs and pension plans - all because their douche-bag boss let them go two months before retirement.

So what do they do?

Hack into the company's computer systems, see that their boss has an illegal shipment of diamonds being shipped through the Caribbean and decide to rob it...obviously.

Ah. Mazing.

The makeshift pirates include Alex - the ringleader, Cody (aka Cookie) - a former NFL player turned gourmet chef with a slight obession with his red spatula, Phyllis - a former steeplechase Olympian who's a little rough around the edges and Jake - a cranky albeit entertaining guy.

I'm sure you're starting to see why this book was so funny.

So, Juli takes her trip down south and finds out that she's allergic to anti-seasick medication. How? Well, she kind of ends up hallucinating and falls asleep in what she thinks is her tour boat but SURPRISE, it isn't. Instead, she breaks into the pirate ship but nobody finds her until they're hours and hours from shore.

And that's when the story really gets going. The best part is that the talented Ms. Fenske was able to get through all of the relevant backstory in the first two chapters and then the plot took off faster than a high-powered speed boat, which is coincidentally the white-collar-pirate's boat of choice for diamond heists. All I want to do is give you a play-by-play of what happens because there are SO many twists and turns that the pace of the book was more like a 100m sprint than a marathon. I won't do that, though.

You're welcome.

Plus, not only is the plotline awesome, but this is also a ROMANCE novel, so there's a whole lotta sex between Juli and Alex. The build-ups are tantalizing. Oh so tantalizing. In fact, by the middle, they move from tantalizing to down right titillating. Oh yes. All puns intended (and justified).

If I had to rank Making Waves, I'd give it a dozen peanut-butter-filled chocolate cupcakes because just when I thought it couldn't get any more delicious, it did. So, RUN to your nearest bookstore (or Kindle-thingy, if you're into that) and BUY THIS BOOK!

Then, find yourself a hidden corner in your house and sink your teeth into the funniest romance novel that I've ever read.

Trust me, you'll be giggling from the second page straight through to the end, with bits of choking laughter in between (so maybe tell someone where you're hiding...just in case).

Making Waves was a cute, fast-paced romp. (And by romp, I meant the plot was implausible, the secondary characters were over-the-top caricatures, and much of the humor was situational.) And this was okay with me, since I knew that's what I was getting into when I picked up the book. I've been known to like many a romp before.

I can't quite pinpoint why this one didn't work for me. It might have been that the humor was a little heavy-handed at times (see: Juli's mother's jello salad). It might have been that the obstacles to the romantic story were a little weak. I mean, Alex was still getting over being dumped TWENTY years ago. Juli's biggest problem was that she was an oddity, but we never actually got to see this first-hand. By all accounts, she's a gorgeous brainiac who makes people laugh. Tough life.

My problem might have also been the crazy emphasis on Juli's breasts. I get it. I really do. Alex was a boob man, and Juli, despite consuming about 5,000 calories a day and never once working out, had an amazing body and boobs. But her cleavage is mentioned like 100 times--no exaggeration. (I'm tempted to buy an e-copy and search and find to do an accurate count.) I don't care how realistic it is in the grand scheme of Things Men Think About--I don't need to read about it every time boobs pop into a man's mind. It got really old after a while.

Anyway...despite these reservations, I didn't hate it. Making Waves was fun and light, and even though it took me a while to read (I wasn't engaged enough with the characters to glom it all in one sitting), I would pick up another Tawna Fenske book in the future.

What a hoot! That's what I have to say first. Pirates, an urn filled with ashes, a woman with a high IQ without any common sense, it was hilarious. When I first started this book Juli was a puzzle to me. In fact, she is a puzzle for the first half of the book. There is something different about her. You aren't sure if she just has a severe case of ADHD or what. She bounces from job to job, trying them all. She gets bored, very easy. Her common sense seems to be out the window and as a reader you find yourself scratching your head wondering what this girl is going to be up to next. Well, after taking some sea motion medicine to get herself ready for a cruise to spread her uncles ashes, oh yeah, did I mention through this whole book she is carrying an urn of ashes. Yes, Tawna Fenske has packed this book full of laughs. So, as she hallucinates she gets on the wrong boat. Instead she crashes Alex's ship (who she met the night before) and they are in fact, pirates.

Juli turns the pirate mission into a disaster but a success. The last few chapters of this book will have you in amazement on one, where the treasure is hidden and two where Tawna came up with such an idea. This author has got some talent and she will surely top your list of authors to watch for their upcoming books.

Tawna Fenske's Making Waves is a hilarious wild ride with dashes of sweet romance.

Juli travels to St. John to honor her Uncle Frank's wishes for his cremated ashes to be tossed into the sea. Alex and his band of unlikely pirates arrive in St. John and plan to seize illegal diamonds from their former boss. When Juli accidentally stows away on Alex's ship, she has twenty-four hours to prove she belongs with Alex's ragtag crew and can help with the heist, if she can overcome her seasickness and use her attraction to Alex to further her cause.

Making Waves excels in adventure, humor, and sexy romance. Fenske's characters are quirky and unique; each one is unforgettable. They are probably the worst band of pirates, but hilarity ensues, creating unexpected plot twists that keep a reader guessing. Alex and Juli's chemistry deserves an A plus. The sweet secondary romance between Jake and Phyllis is perfectly awkward and a wonderful addition to the book. Fenske has brilliant wit with dialogue, filled with fun innuendo. This novel is definitely a must-read romantic comedy.

Dysfunctional pirates, humor, and romance abound in Making Waves by Tawna Fenske. I can't want to read more from this comedic debut author!

Look, if you tell anyone I read a romance novel, and maybe even enjoyed it, I'll have to hunt you down and beat you with a side of beef. But if you promise not to spread salacious rumors about my reading habits, I'll be happy to tell you how much fun I had breezing through Tawna's debut novel.

And it really is a breezy, little read--full of ludicrous action, quirky characters, and enough sexual tension to choke Don Juan. Sure, it gets a little silly in parts, but that's half the fun. And boy, does Tawna know how to write a game of strip Battleship....

So go ahead: suspend your disbelief for a while, lie back with a glass of wine, and enjoy Juli and Alex. Er...I mean, the Caribbean. Yes, that.

This was a really fun book. Juli was such a misfit - she was a certifiable genius, but had real problems in social situations. She also had problems keeping a job, as they would bore her very quickly. She ended up on Alex's boat by mistake, thanks to an allergic reaction to motion sickness medicine. Alex and his friends were planning to hijack some cargo from one of their boss's ships, to get even for them being laid off just before being eligible for their retirements. The whole mission was a comedy of errors and had me laughing out loud many times. The final bit with the cargo from the ship was hysterical.

I almost NEVER laugh out loud while reading a book, but this book completely changed that. Tawna has a natural gift for writing what we smart asses are thinking... and "Juli" has a gift for saying just the right thing and making things happen for herself.

I typically don't read humorous romance books because my sense of humor is very dry and sharp and I tend not to think that the same things are funny as everyone else does. I purchased and read this book because I read Tawna's blog and I wanted to support her as a writer. This is a great read, well worth the price in paperback or on Kindle/Nook.

Can't wait to read her second novel!

I pre-ordered this book quite a while ago, and was thrilled to find that it had downloaded yesterday morning. Within a few hours, I was reading it, hoping it would live up to my expectations.

I was thrilled to find that I absolutely loved this book! I started reading and completely lost track of time until my husband came home to find me laughing on the sofa.

Obviously my laughter intrigued him, since he grabbed it as soon as I finished, eager to find out what was so funny for himself! :-)

This is not my typical genre to read, but Tawna's hilarious blog inspired me to check out her debut. Really enjoyed it, with all the quirky characters, the sexual tension, and the interesting storyline.

Plus, she used " wench" and " nefarious" - two of my favorite words to write.

Yes, it's romance, but guys, trust me you will enjoy this.

I'm really looking forward to this one. Tawna is totally nuts-- in a good way!

This was a fantastic read. Fun and sexy and silly. Who can resist a pirate? Even if he is a 40 something former executive. Juli and Alex and the rest of the gang are wonderful characters. Great first book by Fenske. Can't wait for the next one!

Romp/caper style plot, just plain silly. Characters are right out of central casting. Doris Day for heroine & James Gardner for hero. Writing is good, fast paced & lots of chatter about gourmet food. So many "cowinky-dinks" that I was glad to learn this was a premier effort by the author. Hopefully she improves in plausibilty.

I got an advance copy of this book through work and really liked it. This was such a fun romance. I loved the main characters and hope that they might reappear in a future book. The book is due out in August and I can't wait to start recommending it to my customers.
