Knife Sharpener: Selected Poems Sargon Boulus

Knife Sharpener was started in the months before the author, Iraqi poet Sargon Boulus died, and was eventually published as a posthumous celebration and commemoration of the renowned poet, with a collection of poems, written between 1991 and 2007 that he translated himself, together with an essay, “Poetry and Memory”, written especially for this volume in April 2007. It includes a Foreword by Adonis and Introduction by Irish poet Pat Boran, along with tributes and appreciations by fellow Arab poets Saadi Yousef, Ounsi El-Hage, Amjad Nasser, Abbas Beydoun, Abdo Wazen, Fadhil al-Azzawi, Kadhim Jihad Hassan, Khalid al-Maaly, and Elias Khoury and an Afterword by the publisher Margaret Obank.

وُلد سركون بولص عام 1944في مدينة الحبانية التي تبعد 70 كم إلى الغرب من بغداد.

عاش طفولته ومراهقته في مدينة كركوك الشمالية. هناك جايل مجموعة من الشعراء والكتاب الشباب المتمردين والمتطلعين إلى حياة جديدة وفن جديد، ليشكلوا تلقائياً مجموعة عرفت في ما بعد باسم "جماعة كركوك"، وكان لها أثرها العميق في التطورات الشعرية والأدبية التي شهدها العراق في العقود الأربعة الماضية.
أنتقل في منتصف الستينيات إلى العاصمة بغداد، ونشر عدداً من القصائد الحديثة، وترجمات عديدة من الشعر الأمريكي في بغداد وبيروت.
انتقل أواخر الستينيات إلى بيروت، ليغادرها في ما بعد إلى الولايات المتحدة. عاش منذ ذلك الوقت في مدينة سان فرانسيسكو التي عشقها واعتبرها وطنه الجديد. في السنوات الأخيرة، كان كثير الإقامة في أوربا، خاصة في لندن وألمانيا.

توفي سنة 2007م ، في العاصمة الألمانية برلين، عن عمر يناهز الثالثة والستين، بعد صراع مع المرض.

Sargon Boulus is a Syrian poet who moved to live in America at a young age. His main claim to fame was translating poetry into Arabic and vice versa.
He wrote poetry himself but only published these occasionally in magazines.At his death in 2007 he was in the process of putting his own collection together which has been completed by his friends. The result was this book. An enjoyable read
