Good vision is more than the ability to see 20/20 on an eye chart. Any vision problem is a message alerting us to an unbalanced inner state. Eyeglasses, medications, and surgery may correct poor vision but they cannot correct this inner imbalance. In The Power Behind Your Eyes , Robert-Michael Kaplan presents Integrated Vision Therapy a comprehensive daily program that can actually improve as well as treat the inner causes of poor vision. More comprehensive than other vision care techniques, Integrated Vision Therapy takes a holistic approach to identifying the causes of vision problems and developing noninvasive, natural strategies for treatment, including clear, easy-to-follow exercises, diets, and changes in daily habits.
My eyes are good, apart from one is slightly blurred for distance and the other is very very very slightly blurred for near objects. SO why am I reading a book about how to improve my vision?
It was there in the library, and I picked it up on a whim and read a few pages, then a few more and then started reading from the beginning.
This is no ordinary book about spectacles and contact lenses. It isn't even just a book about eyes exercises and diet. This is a book that aims to change the very way that you live your life.
The message is pretty much: if you got something wrong with your life then it will make your eyes go wonky, and so it's possible to find out how to put your life right by looking at what sort of wonkiness your eyes have.
Here's an indicative quote from one of the early chapters: "There is nothing you must do other than be." In other words, don't live according to your inherited traits; don't live according to your personality; live according to your soul and the qualities thereof.
Whilst reading the book I spent 15 minutes staring at an autostereogram, which is a single-image stereogram (SIS), designed to create the visual illusion of a three-dimensional (3D) scene from a two-dimensional image (thanks Wikipedia). It finally revealed it's hidden depths to me, then I spent another 10 minutes marvelling!
It's for these experiences that our eyes have to be good (oh, and for getting about in the world too - obviously). So, make that change now; look after yourself.
I just finished reading this book for a class, and I thought it was great. I wore glasses and then had eye surgery at age 8 and have had great vision ever since with the exception of having one eye more dominant than the other and not being able to see the special effects in 3-D movies. These two items I just accepted as "the way my eyes work." So after reading this book, I know a lot more about how perceptions of the world are shaped by your vision, what the psychological meaning is behind certain eye conditions and how to keep (or work toward) healthy vision for a lifetime. Kaplan talks about the "addiction" to eyeglasses / contacts and how to break free from them if you currently use them. Lots of case studies, exercises and lifestyle suggestions. I have a few to try out myself - maybe one day soon I'll be ducking down in 3D movies with the rest of you guys.
