Prior to founding The Fiction Studio, I served as Deputy Publisher of Bantam and Publisher of Berkley Books and Avon Books. During this time, I launched the premier science fiction and mystery imprints in the business, and also presided over the largest growth period to date in the history of the #1 single-title romance program.
My earliest publishing experiences were in the field of science fiction and fantasy. I started my first publishing imprint, Bantam Spectra, at the age of 27 and published my first New York Times bestseller with that imprint a year later. My first editorial acquisition, David Brin’s Startide Rising, won the field’s two highest awards, the Hugo and the Nebula. I subsequently published New York Times bestsellers with Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, David Brin, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Raymond Feist, William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, Neil Gaiman, and others, while also acquiring five consecutive winners of the Nebula Award. In addition, I created the “Full Spectrum” anthology series, which won me a World Fantasy Award in 1994.
My biggest commercial accomplishment in the field of science fiction and fantasy was my acquisition and design of the Star Wars book publishing program. Started at a time when licensing interest in the movies was very low, the book publications consistently hit the New York Times list (as high as #1) while also jump-starting the entire Star Wars franchise.
In the nineties, I moved beyond science fiction. As Mass Market Publisher for Bantam, I launched the Bantam Crime Line mystery imprint and was closely involved in the development of several bestselling authors, including Elizabeth George, Robert Crais, and Diane Mott Davidson. I launched the Bantam Fanfare romance imprint, which led to the development of bestselling authors such as Amanda Quick, Tami Hoag, and Iris Johansen.
In 1994, I left Bantam to become SVP and Publisher of the Berkley Publishing Group. The two imprints I started there, Boulevard (a media imprint) and Signature (a literary imprint) had New York Times bestsellers within their first year. I also acquired and edited the bestselling futuristic mysteries by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts).
In 1995, I moved to Avon Books to spearhead a turnaround of that company as SVP and Publisher. I supervised significant changes to the company’s industry-leading romance program, which led to the largest growth period in the program’s history to that point. This was a struggle. I don't believe I have ever read anything more sappy or predictable in my entire life. Think Adam Sandler's "Big Daddy" but with a G rating.
I had to force myself to finish and the only reason I was able to was because it was an ebook. I could sip on my phone, desktop or Nook whenever I had a free moment. If I had needed to carry an actual book around and exert the effort of opening it I would not have done so.

Spinning has some poignant scenes that take one’s breath away, humor that sparkles, and characters that stir up a wealth of emotions.
Driven, unfulfilled, and clueless about why he is restless, Dylan Hunter is convinced he is right on track with his ‘life plan’. He is materially successful, but seemingly has not matured past the hormone-driven adolescent stage in life, even though he is twenty-nine years old.
When three-and-a-half year-old Spring and her mother Diane come into Dylan’s life, he discovers new facets of himself that have never developed. His life takes a detour into Spring’s world of wonder where she finds her reality. She tugs him along to play with ducks, draw on the wall, and into a whole new world of food—all of these far, far away from fast-paced business deals, booze, willing women, and pursuit of good seats at sports events.
Dylan’s friends and business associates, Billie, Laurel, Jim, Amanda, Hank, Mr. Mason, and Mr. Waverly, all function behind their professional and social facades until little Spring and Dylan’s situation becomes scary, so soon after suffering heart wrenching tragedy. All their pseudo-sophistication slips away as they rally around, working tirelessly trying to insure a happy outcome for Spring and Dylan. The interaction these characters have is intriguing.
“…a little child will lead them” is a golden thread of a theme all through Spinning. The precious, precocious little pied-piper Spring lures them all away from their shallow, self-serving pursuits and into a world of true heartwarming love that promises happy-ever-after for many.
Michael Baron, with delightful humor, exquisite description, and exceptional understanding of the emotional needs of people, makes Spinning a testament of love that gives strength and courage to overcome tragedy and meet and beat difficulties in life that seem insurmountable. His writing has a magical quality that touches one’s heart and soul.
Spinning, with is seemingly shallow characters, pulls the reader into compelling events that help these characters become remarkable and so real one can feel their pain, fears, needs, and joy. The range of emotions Michael Baron weaves into Spinning makes it a story that lingers in the mind and heart.

Spinning is the first book I’ve read by Michael Baron, and I assure you it will not be the last. A compelling work of contemporary fiction, this book shares equal parts humor, romance and drama creating a poignant story that is sure to stir your emotions.
A public relations executive by day and a playboy by night, Dylan Hunter balances work, martinis and women like a juggler trying to keep his plates continuously spinning and under control. But when Diane, a former lover, shows up out of the blue with her young daughter in tow, Dylan is about to send another plate spinning into the air.
Dylan and Diane rekindle their romance while her daughter, Spring, begins to soften Dylan’s heart and open his eyes to the world as seen by a three year old. Suddenly crayon drawings on expensive Manhattan apartment walls, macaroni topped pizza and zoo visits to see the penguins become cherished moments for the happy trio. But just when he makes some heavy choices about his life, Dylan’s world suddenly crashes to a halt, leaving him alone to take care of Spring. Little does he realize that Spring becomes much more than just a charge in his care when her fragile, wonder-filled world fills Dylan with feelings he never anticipated. But when the law intervenes to take Spring away, Dylan is left fighting with little hope for winning the girl who has changed his life forever.
Baron weaves a splendid page-turner with a strong cast of characters you can’t help but get attached to. I also prefer stories with lots of dialogue and this one fit the bill perfectly. Another thing I really enjoyed about this book is that it is written in the first person, from Dylan’s point of view. The author doesn’t shy away from showing Dylan’s thoughts about women, work or his feelings about being stuck taking care of Spring. Having teased others in the past about being “pre-fab” (single with a child), Dylan now finds himself in this exact position and he isn’t laughing anymore. But Spring’s situation is touching and beautifully written; a balm to soothe Dylan in a most unexpected way. Will this playboy permanently trade in his martinis for play dates? Only one little girl and the mystery of her paternity will tell.
Spinning shines with warmth, witty prose and dazzling story-telling… a story not to be missed!

I'm in shock that this book is so well-reviewed. I thought it was horrible. The Kindle version had about 3 millions typos and grammatical errors. I would normally look beyond that, but the story itself was so terrible. It felt like by the time the author got to the last 30 pages or so, even he was sick of the book - it ended abruptly and poorly.
The characters themselves were all one note - the only one with any spark at all was little Spring, though she should have been written a year older than she was for her actions and speaking voice to match the character age. The storyline had some promise, but it was poorly executed and felt like a creative writing assigment on steroids. Plates dropping, cojones, D-man, etc. - we get it, please stop hammering your reader over the head with your obviousness!
Anyway - I'm glad I got this for $0 during a promotion, otherwise I would feel robbed.

Spinning fell by chance in my hands and the first person narrative engaged me enough to keep reading. The book is perfectly described by the blurb so there are no real surprises, but it is very charming and a great spirit lifter especially if you like the "kid that grows on you" story.
Short, fast, kept me turning the pages when i just planned to take a look at it and I found myself finishing it and having a cheerful time. Sure it is a little bit of a wish fulfillment novel, but that's kind of implied in the blurb and the author delivers what is expected very, very well.
A perfect summer time read though also I would recommend it if you are tired/moody/etc since it will lift your spirits and bring a smile to your face

Spinning is a quickly ready, aptly titled book about a free-minded, successful twenty-something male who thinks he's got it all figured out. That is, of course, until he meets a few special women who make him reevaluate where his life is and where it's headed.
While I enjoyed reading this book, there were a few plot devices that left me, for lack of a better term, spinning when all was said and done. For instance, I feel like the writer opened a door with the character of Diane's mysterious suitcase. Not only does he discover the suitcase, he returns to it over and over again. As a result, the reader is waiting to find out the significance of its contents, but that bit of the book ultimately leads to a dead end. Also, I didn't completely love the ending. I felt it was a bit rushed and there could have been more detail added before the end result. Overall though I enjoyed the journey.

This was a Nook freebie. It is ok if you are into Nicholas Sparks. I'm not. This did prove to be a nice diversion while I was sitting waiting on trick or treaters because I didn't have to concentrate on what I was reading. It's very predictable and sappy. Some of it drags. What is it about? A New York PR man who is all career-oriented and into bars and casual dating meets the girl of his dreams, who just happens to have a cute 3 year old. Happiness doesn't last forever, however. You get the drift.

Love. A greatly overused, under-defined word these days. This book explores, on a practical level, what love really means to a twenty-something who has been looking for it in perhaps all the wrong places.
I have read several atypical books recently. This was one of the best. The characters start as stereotypes then grow. The plot unfolds gently and, perhaps, too easily, until it smashes into a wall--several times.

Story of an up and coming ad executive who is living the good life, and suddenly becomes involved with a woman and her 3 year old child. Tracks his development out of his self absorbed lifestyle to caring for the woman and child. The ending is unrealistic. But I like the young girl and the interaction they had, that part seemed real.

This is the best novel I have read this year. It contained many plot twists. Yes some of them were predictable, but I enjoyed the story of how a child can transform lives. How those searching need only to stop and look around.

The story was interesting enough. Dylan becomes the caretaker/father for Spring, unexpectedly.
The book is a bit silly in that Dylan, at 30, falls in and out of love as frequently as a 15 year old. Also, the gratuitous sex attitude and lack of responsibility that his circle of friends have is pathetic. Further, the story is predictable.
The idea behind the story is what kept me reading: a little girl is lost and alone and she finds love.

I didn't care for this book. The biggest problem was the kid. She was supposed to be 3, but her character was better fitted with a 6 year old. Even if she was 6, she still wasn't portrayed right. I'm glad this jerk of a man found meaning in life, but it wasn't written very well.
I liked other books by this author, but wouldn't recommend this one.

I downloaded this ebook to my Nook library when it was free in 2012. It is a human interest story with interesting characters. It lost a star for me because I kept wondering why D didn't consult a lawyer before the second crisis.

Extremely poor proof reading.
This is the 4th book I’ve read by this author and all of them have been spell-binding. However, the punctuation in all of them has been totally frustrating. It’s a shame because this is one author that has great potential.

It isn't grand literature, but it's a feel-good story about loving an orphaned child and discovering your values...so it takes you away from worldly cares and let's you smile with a happy ending.

If ever there was a book that brought you into the characters' lives, Spinning is that book. Baron's descriptions had me feeling as though I was right there with "D" and his friends, Jim, Hank, Billie, and his boss, Mason.
****SPOILER ALERT*** DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT ***
Dylan is a regular young playboy, picking up chicks at bars, never staying with one for any length of time. He drinks with his buddies and plans to wow the business world with his intelligence and he's got what it takes.
Early one morning after one of his late night rendezvouses leaves his apartment, showing up on his doorstop is a woman from one of these flings along with a small girl. "D" as his friends know him as - quickly does the math trying to figure out whether he's going to find out he's the girl's dad.
The woman, Diane tells D that she sold her belongings, left Chicago and now needs a place to stay for her and her daughter until she finds an apartment. D agrees. She quickly insinuates herself into his life and into his apartment. It doesn't take long for Diane's young daughter Spring to find her way into his heart.
Diane lands a job and an apartment and moves out but continues to be a big part in D's life. He finds himself asking divorced Jim how he knew that his ex was "the one," thinking that Diane might be "the one" for him. He then talks to his friend, ex-lover, and co-worker Billie about it but Billie plays around just like D so she's clueless.
D is ready to declare his feelings for Diane but he gets a dreaded phone call where he find out that she got killed in an accident. He has no clue who to notify. Diane's parents are long deceased and Spring's father never knew he had a child, according to Diane.
He expects that Spring will be out of his life now in no time and things will be back to the way they were pre-Diane and Spring - back to his former playboy life once he finds a relative for her but quickly discovers that the three and half year old is scared and needs something and someone familiar. She's confused and doesn't understand that Mommy isn't coming back.
Billie and Jim and other of D's friends rally around him. Mason tells him to take a month from work. D makes a half-hearted attempt to locate a relative for Spring. Billie spends more and more time with them and Spring takes a quick liking to her, even making it difficult when D tried hooking up with Lauren who quickly exits his apartment.
He's so grateful for Billie and all she's done for them. Her Christmas gift to him is a weekend on Cape Cod for the three of them. After a great weekend, D discovers that Billie still wants to play the field and he tells her to just go and that he can't have her in their lives like that. He misses her.
Child Services shows up at his door and they take Spring away. He's made no attempt for custody...

Dylan finds that he's grown up a lot -- he's changed having Spring in his life. He can't picture life without her.
I was touched by the way his bar friends were there for him and for Spring. Who especially touched me was his divorced friend Jim who lived in the same building as D. Of course, Billie touched me as well, in the way she let down her hair with them and became like a child herself. She brought over food and Jim had the beer and pizza. D could go to Jim's door and wake him in the middle of the night, bringing Jim to the door in his boxers looking frazzled, letting D in and talking with him.

Dylan is a regular young playboy, picking up chicks at bars, never staying with one for any length of time. He drinks with his buddies and plans to wow the business world with his intelligence and he's got what it takes.
Early one morning after one of his late night rendezvouses leaves his apartment, showing up on his doorstop is a woman from one of these flings along with a small girl. "D" as his friends know him as - quickly does the math trying to figure out whether he's going to find out he's the girl's dad.
The woman, Diane tells D that she sold her belongings, left Chicago and now needs a place to stay for her and her daughter until she finds an apartment. D agrees. She quickly insinuates herself into his life and into his apartment. It doesn't take long for Diane's young daughter Spring to find her way into his heart.
Diane lands a job and an apartment and moves out but continues to be a big part in D's life. He finds himself asking divorced Jim how he knew that his ex was "the one," thinking that Diane might be "the one" for him. He then talks to his friend, ex-lover, and co-worker Billie about it but Billie plays around just like D so she's clueless.
D is ready to declare his feelings for Diane but he gets a dreaded phone call where he find out that she got killed in an accident. He has no clue who to notify. Diane's parents are long deceased and Spring's father never knew he had a child, according to Diane.
He expects that Spring will be out of his life now in no time and things will be back to the way they were pre-Diane and Spring - back to his former playboy life once he finds a relative for her but quickly discovers that the three and half year old is scared and needs something and someone familiar. She's confused and doesn't understand that Mommy isn't coming back.
Billie and Jim and other of D's friends rally around him. Mason tells him to take a month from work. D makes a half-hearted attempt to locate a relative for Spring. Billie spends more and more time with them and Spring takes a quick liking to her, even making it difficult when D tried hooking up with Lauren who quickly exits his apartment.
He's so grateful for Billie and all she's done for them. Her Christmas gift to him is a weekend on Cape Cod for the three of them. After a great weekend, D discovers that Billie still wants to play the field and he tells her to just go and that he can't have her in their lives like that. He misses her.
Child Services shows up at his door and they take Spring away. He's made no attempt for custody...

Dylan finds that he's grown up a lot -- he's changed having Spring in his life. He can't picture life without her.
I was touched by the way his bar friends were there for him and for Spring. Who especially touched me was his divorced friend Jim who lived in the same building as D. Of course, Billie touched me as well, in the way she let down her hair with them and became like a child herself. She brought over food and Jim had the beer and pizza. D could go to Jim's door and wake him in the middle of the night, bringing Jim to the door in his boxers looking frazzled, letting D in and talking with him.

I became a fan of Michael Baron's after I read Crossing The Bridge, and his next book, The Journey Home, which was just as good. Talented!!! In this book, Spinning, Mr. Baron, through his writing style and words created life like characters, whereas I fell in love with Spring, the 3 year old child in the center of the story line. Touching!!! This page turner, had this reader, actually able to feel the emotions the characters were experiencing. I had to keep reminding myself that this poignant book was written by a male author. Brilliant!! A novel from page one to the very last page was full of emotion, heart wrenching and tender, funny and sad, warm with devotion and unconditional love. An engrossing read that pulls on your heartstrings and doesn't let go even after you read the last page. Superb!!! A highly recommended must read!!

Have you ever seen those clowns who are spinning many plates and then they let one fall so they can save the others? Dylan Hunter is constantly spinning but refuses to let any plates drop. He's a young executive director for a public relations firm who works hard and parties even harder. He has a great Manhatten apartment that has a revolving door where the women are concerned. He tells himself he may want to have kids later - much later, but marriage doesn't even enter into the equation.
In the middle of the night, he hears a knock on his door. He doesn't know who it could be but is frantically looking for something to wear and to see where his girl of the night is. She seems to have left but her underthings are strewn about the apartment. He is shocked to see ex-girlfriend Diane at the door with her young daughter. Still half out of it he invites them in while he is frantically figuring out dates in his head to see if the girl is his. Diane explains to him that she has sold everything to come to Manhatten at his suggestion to get a great job. Dylan made that suggestion years ago, but it took this long for her to make the plunge. They need somewhere to stay until they find an apartment and Dylan quickly agrees to them staying with him.
Dylan's plates are spinning, not used to people in his home and interrupting his routine but he quickly adapts. The little girl, Spring, quickly makes her way into his heart. But when there is an accident, Dylan becomes the sole caretaker of Spring. Dylan does his best, but Spring is scared that Dylan will go away too. Two people find their way towards one another, but Dylan's plates are spinning at a frantic rate and something has to fall.
Michael Baron pens such soul-searching novels that are full of warmth, humor and superb characters. When you first meet Dylan, you see a partying no-care-in-the-world player just looking out for himself. But Dylan grows and matures as a little girl shows him how to really live and to love. The antics that Dylan and Spring get up to will tug on your heartstrings and make you laugh out loud. A very touching and compelling story not to be missed!

This is an absolutely charming and remarkable book; mainstream fiction at its very best. At times, I would laugh out loud as I rapidly read the entire book at breakneck speed because with every page flip the story kept me engaged and wondering “what next?” Dylan is a likable single man; handsome and somewhat promiscuous, with a terrific job and a few staunch friends. He is foot-free and fancy-free with an aversion to, what he and his friends refer to as pre-fabs, a rather insulting and comical term for having a relationship with a person who already has a child or other dependent. Dylan is exceedingly good in his executive position in public relations. He can put the spin on any story with finesse.

I usually veer to the chick lit/woman’s fiction genre, but every once in awhile I will take a chance and step outside the box. A few months back, I was asked to read The Journey Home by Michael Baron. I read it, and fell in love. When I was recently asked to read Baron’s latest novel, Spinning, I knew I had to accept. And again, I am glad I did.
The story follows Dylan Hunter, a playboy public relations executive that specializes in “spinning” or bending the truth to suit his or his client’s needs. But Dylan is thrown when a former lover, Diane, shows up on his doorstep. Diane has moved her and her young daughter, Spring, to New York City for a change of pace. After first worrying Spring could possibly be his, Dylan doesn’t know how to handle the sudden change in his life. Diane assures him he is not the father, but won’t go into any further details on Spring’s father. Dylan falls into a comfortable pattern with Diane and Spring, and enjoys having more to live for than just his job, money, or his next fling. But his new shiny life is soon smashed to pieces when Diane is killed in a car accident. With no other family members stepping forward, it seems Dylan is the only person young Spring has left in her life. Dylan has to decide if he can handle the sudden responsibility of parenthood, understand the legalities of adopting a child, and see if he can handle spinning all the plates at once.
Spinning was such a wonderful read. Dylan isn’t the most likeable character at first, but you can see he is only human. Spring breaths fresh air into the novel, and I broke down at several points when reading thinking about how she lost her mother at such a young age. Baron explores deep and sensitive topics- single parenthood, death, adoption- just to name a few. This book promises to touch a nerve with all readers, and will leave you thinking about the character’s lives after you have finished. Another must read from Michael Baron.

He’s got a great job, great friends, a great social life and the future looks bright! Until one day when he’s woken by a knock on his door in the middle of the night. My one complaint was that I often had a hard time believing Spring was only 3 years old – she felt more like a 5 or 6 year old. With her sunny exuberance, Spring is the catalyst for change and growth in the other characters, and no matter what age, she’s the heart of the story. While not an action packed tale, Spinning keeps the reader enthralled with its realistic portrayal of everyday people dealing with the unexpected hardships of life and love.

When I was first offered this book I jumped at the chance as I've read and enjoyed other books by the author and knew this would be a good story.
Dylan is single and has worked his way up the ladder to a lead position and now with the great job he had done getting an account from another company to handle, he has many choices-job wise.
Problem is Diane who he knew a long time ago has reappeared in his life with a 3 year old and the child is not his. She moves on and gets a job herself and it comes with an apartment and day care.
Tragedy strikes next as Dylan is becoming accustomed to the child, Spring, she's grabbed a piece of his heart. He must now be her only living family, although they are not related at all.
The refreshing thing about this book is that it's about Dylan and how he copes with things from his perspective. Different that it's not from the woman's point of view but still a very good well written story as are the authors other books I've read.
When Family Services came knocking he had built up a relationship with Spring, routines, etc and finds himself at a loss but with help from his friends he gets in gear to fight for her. He's only a single guy and he's not blood related and considers again all the things left behind from Diane...

His only responsibility was making his clients and his boss happy. He was doing great keeping all his proverbial plates spinning around and around. His priorities begin to change and he starts to see a different path in his future.
In Spinning, Michael Baron brings us into Dylan's heart and mind as he struggles to keep all the plates spinning. When he suddenly finds himself fulfilling the role of Spring's sole caregiver, things start to slip. How can he hold on to his job, his friends, his lifestyle, while caring for a little girl on his own? What is really important to him? Will he be able to keep all the plates spinning or will something have to drop?

This was an interesting tale about a 29 year old, Dylan Hunter. He was a man about town, no commitments...until early one morning an old girlfriend, Diane shows up on his doorstep, with her 3 year old daughter, Spring in tow. They renew their friendship, and suddenly Diane is killed in a car accident, and in a blink of the eye, Dylan's life has changed completely.
There was alternately humorous and romantic, tragic, playful and dramatic 'Spinning' in this emotion-packed novel. It is the first book I have read by this author, and I really liked it.
I know some have compared him to Nicholas Sparks, but, personally I like Michael's novel much better than Sparks novels. No paranormal surprises in Michael Baron's book. I hated Sparks last two books because of the paranormal garbage he threw in them.
I think Michael Baron is an author I will read again.

Dylan Hunter had attained a measure of success at twenty-nine by exploiting those around him. A public relations executive, Dylan knew how to ensnare and satisfy clients, finesse women, and masterfully achieve his every goal. Spinning his life for his desired outcomes was his life and he was good at it.
An unexpected return of a former girlfriend attended by her three-year old daughter irreversibly changes Dylan's idyllic life. Dylan can not successfully spin or foresee the massive changes that he will be confronted with and must respond honestly and creatively to his new situation.
The characters were real and rich. I especially enjoyed the character of Spring who was adorable and heartwarming. A touching, contemporary story that tugs on the heartstrings, while being a delightful read.

I wish I could grant half stars in the rating. This is more of a 2.5 for me, not 2.
The story is nice, a bit predictable; but sweet enough that you don't mind it so much.
Mi complaint is about the writing. I don't know who, or if there was an editor for this book. I don't know whether the problems exist only in the kindle version, though I don't think so. It appears there was never a proof read for the book. Punctuation signs are missing in every paragraph; sentences are run on with each other, ideas are cut short without ever being completed. The problem is big enough that at some point it becomes really annoying.
I liked the story, I really did. Perhaps it wasn't my favorite, but it was nice enough. However, I could never in good conscience rate this book 3 or higher with so many writing flaws.
The story is nice, a bit predictable; but sweet enough that you don't mind it so much.
Mi complaint is about the writing. I don't know who, or if there was an editor for this book. I don't know whether the problems exist only in the kindle version, though I don't think so. It appears there was never a proof read for the book. Punctuation signs are missing in every paragraph; sentences are run on with each other, ideas are cut short without ever being completed. The problem is big enough that at some point it becomes really annoying.
