A young couple are brutally attacked whilst riding home from work. Former soldier, turned private investigator, Dean Monroe, meets one of the victims whilst he is in hospital undergoing a routine operation on an old war wound. A bond is formed, but was the chance meeting actually by chance, or was it part of an eleborate plan conceived by a sinister third party? Conspiracies begin to unfold, and Monroe soon finds himself pitted against a secret organisation made up of some of the most powerful men in England. But the worst is yet to come... Monroe's worst fears are about to be realised. He is about to be sent back to war!
This was the first book by Thomas Caldwell that I'd read, having heard good things about the Dean Monroe PI series.
And I have to say I really enjoyed it! It's a gritty and twisty action thriller, with a very well-structured story and a cast of memorable characters.
I can't say too much about the plot itself without giving away spoilers, but it all starts when a couple who are out cycling in the countryside are viciously attacked in what seems like a random act of violence. Monroe then inadvertently meets the female victim in hospital where they are both coincidentally undergoing treatment, and vows to take up the girl's case, and to trace the attackers. But it seems that this case is a lot more complicated than it first appears, and Monroe has got himself involved with desperate and dangerous underworld characters...
I really enjoyed all the twists and turns of the story, and liked how the locations were familiar to me too. It's an intriguing book where you never know quite where the story will take you next, and there's certainly some big surprises as you reach the finale.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a gritty and action-packed detective story, and will certainly read some more from this series.
