Having moved to the Caribbean to get away from his ill-fated association with a secret society known as the New Medmenham Monks, Dean Monroe is woken in the middle of the night by a desperate person on the phone. Someone close to him has been washed up on the beach on the island of St Vincent. Already convinced that his past is catching up with him, the private investigator begins to ask himself some very deep questions. On a recent drunken binge, he had ended up sat on the edge of a bridge. Had he fallen off? Was he dead? Or was he in purgatory, waiting for the “second death”. Someone close to him holds the key to a secret. Could this be the answer he is looking for? Following a series of clues, he will finally discover the truth. Sometimes, though, the truth is best left unknown. Especially when everything you ever thought about the civilised world turns out to be one big lie.
After enjoying the first Dean Monroe book, I was really looking forward to this sequel, & wasn't disappointed!
The events here continue from book one, where the private detective has sold his business on & moved out to the Caribbean, & as far from the dreaded Medmenham Monks as he can get.
But it's not long before trouble arrives at his door, with a dead body washed up on a beach nearby which is somehow connected to him.
Without giving too much away, this leads him on to a dangerous mission where he not only returns to England, but also ventures out to Israel & crosses swords with mossad agents.
As with the first book, there are plenty of twists & turns along the way, & people who maybe aren't who they always appear to be. And will Monroe fix his personal life & make amends? This was a great rollercoaster ride of action & intrigue, & kept me in suspense until the end. Looking forward now to the next book!
