My very first "favorite book." Probably the first book I could read by myself. I think I can still quote the entire thing from memory (after all these years). I still have it, although the cover is gone and the pages are rather tattered. I've enjoyed finding out just how many other people loved this book, too.

I was looking through the books on the Purple House Press website and when the cover image for this little book came up, I suddenly recognized it as a book I'd loved in my childhood! It is an interesting feeling to see a book and suddenly remember it after so many years. It's like my child self is loving this little book all over again!

What can I say about this book? I still have my copy (although it could almost be considered an illuminated manuscript now, what with all of the coloring someone added). This was the very first book I read (Read! Read! Read!) all by myself.

Adults will most likely be able to figure out where the story is going pretty early on, but there is something quite satisfying, as a child, in Ann's ability to articulate what she wants and her actually getting it. Needless to say, Ann's mother is a peach, encouraging her independence while giving her choices.

These days, the book would probably be named OMG Madison Lurvs Pink; hopefully, if this is still even in print, children will be able to open their minds to a time where red was the rage. Red! Red! Red!

This was my favorite book as a child and the first book that I read by myself. This book may be to blame for my love of the color red. It was checked out many times from my local library. The repetitive text gave me confidence. Many years later when I became a teacher I rediscovered it. Now I read it to my daughter- putting her name in for the main character.

I must have read this 1000x times when I was little way back when. Unfortunately, the one from my childhood was destroyed in a flooded basement at my grandparents house.

This was my favorite book as a girl in the 60s. I have for a few years tried to find copies of it with no luck. Today I happened to search on Amazon again and found it is in print again! I can't wait to get my copy and read it once again. Ann likes red. Red red red.

This is the first book i picked out and read by myself so many years ago. I still remember it. I’ve had my hair dyed red for many years, perhaps influenced by this book. I’ve always thought of myself as sort of a rebel like Ann.

One of my favorite books as a child. I randomly got the urge to re-read tonight. It's still super cute.

This is a nostalgic add - I'm pretty sure that outside of the Dick and Jane books, this might be the very first book I read all by myself, which earns it five stars. Thanks Ann!

First sentence: Ann likes red. Red! Red! Red! "A blue dress, Ann?" "I like red," said Ann.

Premise/plot: Ann and her mom have gone shopping. Anne likes RED, RED, RED. What will she buy? Perhaps a RED dress, a RED hat, a RED belt, RED sandals!

My thoughts: I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this one as a child. I did. I think I had the book memorized I read it so much. I was quite THRILLED to find a copy recently. Though I had forgiven my mom for giving *my* copy away, I am so happy to have found a new copy.

Yes, the book is simple: just sixteen words to tell the whole story. But apparently 16 words are more than enough to tell a GOOD story when you know what you're doing.

And I will admit the book has a very VINTAGE feel. Some might say dated, but I prefer VINTAGE.

Text: 5 out of 5
Illustrations: 3 out of 5
Total: 8 out of 10

This is the first book I read. According to my parents, I was three years old (possibly three and a half, but basically less than four) when I learned to read. The repetition and the association of the words with the pictures in the text helped me to make word associations, so that the first written word I recognized was "red"... The book helped make learning to read easy for me, and I think it's a great book for helping your kids learn reading.

Great kid's book that was re-published in 2001. This is the first book I ever read as a child and was glad to see it was back. Strangely, I grew up not being a big fan of the color red and now wonder if this book might have subconsciously caused that! (ha!)

Great simple, repetitive book that is a great way for kids to learn to read.

This book was my very favorite when I first learned how to read. Seeing the cover of the book brings back wonderful memories of when I found my first love of reading back in first grade with Mrs. Yoder! I was so excited to learn and still am. I am glad to have found this book again and revisit those days.

When I was little, this was my favorite book, just before Joshua's Potty. Then I moved right on up to Nancy Drew mysteries. Still, when I think about Ann and her red dress, red socks, red shoes and red purse, I'm touched by a bit of nostalgia for when life was easier (sigh).

I remember reading this as a kid. I often have books like this pop up in my mind, as can not for the life of me remember what the title was. I found this one and bought a copy from Abe books. Kudos to them for having books that I remember from childhood.

Oh! I was so happy to find this book listed. This is one of Anne's favorite books (of course), recommended by another favorite Anne (Hall Cropper).

This book taught me how to read and I still have the words memorized almost 40 years later! I like a woman who knows what she wants and Ann certainly does.

This was my very first "favorite" book. My mom still sent me red socks in college, despite the fact I never wore red. I do love red though.
