omg.... srsly! This author is making me crazy! So I'm a big fan of Stargate Atlantis and a friend just turned me on to this author. One of the things she writes is SGA fanfic. (This story is SGA fanfic btw, if that's not clear.)
Keira writes exactly the kinds of stories I love. Really long, with tons and tons of plot development, detail, character development, world building, these are my ideal stories. Yes, there's crazy hot sex, yes, there's hot men, but there's also a story in there that's really interesting and engrossing and would stand solidly without the hot, sexy men.
To me, that's perfect. I don't like reading stories about guys screwing. I like reading stories where guys also happen to screw. I need a plot people! A plot!!! And all Keira's stories have awesome plots.
She's written several very long stories in the SGA universe with McKay and Sheppard as the main characters. I've spent the last week with almost no sleep reading them.
But why is she making me crazy??? Because she posts chapters! She's got a bunch of stories ongoing and she might not post a chapter on a story for months! And none of these AMAZING stories are finished!!!! Except this one.
This 'verse is one of my favorite AUs, with a unique and appealing paradigm for the sentience of the city, great protagonists with richly developed dynamics and decisions, and plenty of "plot".
It's interesting to see which characters not included in the initial expedition were brought into the story, and the variety of their responses to the truths, challenges, changes of living on Atlantis. The attitudes of Pegasus-native refugees on the mainland (Athosians and others) are another complication.
This time, the only specific, significant character named in canon to be bashed (believably so) is Gen. Landry, AFAICR.
I decided to keep this review vague, and thus fairly spoiler-free, but it's difficult, because there are lots of things I could go on about!
N.b., it's definitely McShep, with misunderstanding soon resolved into romantic and sexual relationship, plus there are other minor het and slash pairings, but since romance isn't a major percentage of the content, I didn't shelve it as "a romance".

This is amazing! Brilliant concept and expertly executed! I love the fact that Atlantis is sentient in both biological and AI terms. Peoples issues where done well especially Teyla's. Very much enjoyed this story. Can't wait for more books in this series!!!
This is the direction I can only wish the television series had taken. The author's take on the city as a sentient biological organism was intriguing. But I especially liked the way the expedition evolved from a group of coworkers into a tight-knit community.
