ANGELA DAVIS: High Priestess of Bloody Revolution or Martyr for Political Freedom?
In 1970 black militants attempted to kidnap a judge and four other hostages to force the American authorities into releasing the famous Soledad Brothers. The attempt ended in a bloody shooting and the kidnappers were arrested. Angela Davis was charged with obtaining the guns used and consequently imprisoned as an accomplice. Angela's arrest and trial raised a storm of protest that threatened to explode into fierce rebellion.
Really well-written, all historical context for the most part is explained very very accessibly. The Professor was great at reframing paradigms to be much more understandable and relatable to the average person, I liked his input a lot. I wish he waited out the trial to cover the eventual bail and acquittal, but oh well. Sad to see that not much has changed in the 24 years following Angela Davis’ trial.
Side note: The newspaper clippings that came with this are awesome. Idk if it’s because my copy is thrifted? but they’re really cool.
It is a fascinating cultural artifact; if anything else, the topic at hand is exceptionally well told, and the author does a great job of explaining the timeline of events accurately and upfront. He does a great job at writing this topic, which would help someone not well-adjusted to the American legal system understand the context of what is happening here. The Professor is also a good writer who can engage the reader; even if they should have waited for the trial to end before releasing the book, there is still enough here to make it a worthwhile read.
