Excerpts from Susan Hathorn's journal, combined with contextualizing commentary by Catherine Petroski, create a vivid picture of daily life and social mores in the age of sail.
If you enjoy reading about real-live women's experiences, (think Mary Chestnut's Civil War diaries) you will love this book. I especially liked the way the author went through all of Susan's activities and listed her daily tasks in an appendix.
Mrs. Petroski is a superb researcher. I wish she'd write more books!
