Lady with Carnations
Lady with Carnations is not only the traditional name of a famous Holbein miniature which unexpectedly comes into a London salesroom in the mid-thirties: it is also the soubriquet by which some of her close friends think of the antique-dealer who buys it. Много приятен за четене роман със силни характери, доста предвидим, макар и не напълно. Краят определено ме изненада.
И тримата герои, част от необичаен любовен триъгълник, са прекрасно изградени.
Имах нужда да прочета точно такава история, изпълнена с много оптимизъм, предвид колко много натегнато трагични истории се пишат днес за пребивани жени и слаби мъже. Беше си глътка свеж въздух.
3.5 звезди всъщност, но няма как да ги отбележа.
И тримата герои, част от необичаен любовен триъгълник, са прекрасно изградени.

Being the owner of a 1948 copy of this novel, I get to actually feel the browned pages in my fingers and smell the familiar old book smell, while contemplating once again what I think of as proof of sublime talent.
This was the first book I ever read, back when I was still a child, and it will always be special to me. I usually read several lines out loud, the most remarkable ones, just for the pleasure of them being communicated to the world.
A.J. Cronin was a distinguishably talented author, as it shows in his diverse collection of novels, and I can't help but think of this as a remarkable, old-fashioned if you may, love story.

O clasica poveste de iubire. De atunci, multe astfel de scenarii pentru filme, in special, s-au mai scris, chiar si astazi pot spune ca este un subiect de actualitate. Daca povestea a fost inca din primele pagini previzibila si siropoasa, ma declar putin dezamagita de stilul narativ extrem de banal. Povestea a fost amabalata frumos, cadrul a fost des schimbat, am facut cunostinta si cu lumea glamour a teatrului (subiect care-mi cam displace).

Türkçe ''Karanfilli Kadın '' olarak yıllar önce basılmış Nadir Kitaptan almıştım.Sahaflardan bulabilirsiniz eğer isterseniz.Cronin hayranları için diyorum tabiki. Daha önce okuduğum için üstelik iki defa okumuştum bu üçüncüsü oldu.Yinede severek okuduğumu söyleyebilirim doğal olarak sonucu bilince aynı zevk almıyor insan.

După "Castelul pălărierului" și "Citadela" i-am îndrăgit stilul. Însă acesta este doar un scurt roman de dragoste. Probabil în ultimul timp am abuzat de romane detective, așa încât așteptam, fără să-mi dau seama de acest lucru, crima.
Dar aceasta este o carte liniștită (dacă excludem momentele de tangaj de pe Atlantic), cu iubiri împlinite și nerealizate, împărtășite și neștiute; cu teatru, vise și două lumi: Anglia pe de o parte, și SUA - pe de alta.
Atenție, SPOILER!
O miniatură a domnișoarei de Quercy cu garoafe este vândută la o licitație. Și de aici începe călătoria cititorului. Noua posesoare este o vânzătoare de antichități care are o nepoată mai tânără. Însă prăpastia de 10 ani dintre ele nu o împiedică să se îndrăgostească de logodnicul nepoatei...
Sper că v-am intrigat.
Nu-mi plac garoafele. Mi se asociază cu înmormântările.

Din toate cărțile preferate, care așteaptă să fie recitite (lucru pe care îl fac extrem de rar, dat fiind faptul că am tare multe pe care încă nu le-am citit măcar o dată), datorită unui club de lectură, am recitit anume această carte (al cărei subiect mi-l aminteam destul de vag).
Totul începe atunci când Catherine Lorimer achiziționează, la o licitație, miniatura „Doamna cu garoafe” ce o reprezenta pe domnișoara de Quercy, fata unui ambasador al Franței la curtea lui Henric al VIII-lea, pictată de Holbein în 1532. Cathetine curând este invitată să facă cunăștință cu logodnicul zvăpăiatei sale nepoate pe care o adora și căreia îi ținea loc de mamă după moartea părinților acesteia într-un accident. Catherine o adora pe Nancy și nu i-ar fi făcut niciodată, pentru nimic în lume vreun rău. Dar Nancy, o actriță în devenire, adora teatrul. Astfel, Catherine ajunge să cunoască adevărata iubire (împărtășită) alături de Chris Madden. O istorioară scurtă, cu descrieri somptuoase, detaliate (așa cum îmi plac, probabil motiv din care nu-mi amintisem subiectul sau mare parte din acțiuni). Mare activitate prin cartea dată nu veți găsi, așa că nu e pentru pasionații de aventură. E o carte care se citește cel mai bine iarna, în așteptarea sărbătorilor de Crăciun, cu brad împodobit.

Не е най-доброто от Кронин, на което съм попадала. Нещо като старомоден любовен роман, с елементи на мелодрама, с напълно предвидим сюжет от началото до края. Имаше много неточности, неясноти и откровени разминавания по отношение на времето, през което се развива действието. Такива неща ме дразнят, тъй като не мога да наместя в ума си сцените. Друго, което не ми хареса е подходът към жената, към нейния път и разбиране за щастието. Макар да има известна доза истина, не съм склонна да оправдавам моралистките оценки на Кронин.
Въпреки това е приятно четиво - хубаво би било от време на време да съм на място, където хората са високи, красиви, елегантни, богати, с бели зъби и с честни сърца. И където краят винаги е щастлив.

My friend and I had an AJ Cronin reading spree when we were in high school in the late 1970's. Although I'm sure we read a number of his books, this is the only one I still have, and can recall in any depth. It's a short novel, but quite a lovely story.

I'm giving this three stars, though I'm not sure it's the same novel I read. I read one called "White Carnations," and, since there's nothing similar for Cronin under that title, I'm guessing that this is the same book.
If it is, I enjoyed it as an old fashioned romance. The characters in my book are Nancy and Katharine. Ring any bells for anyone?

În acea zi umedă de noiembrie numai miniatura lui Holbein putuse atrage în sala Vernon atâţia amatori şi negustori. Căci întrecea cu mult ca interes şi valoare toate celelalte obiecte puse în vânzare. Era dealtfel foarte cunoscută sub numele de Doamna cu garoafe. Faptul că familia Kneller din Wroxon Abbey acceptase să se despartă de ea, constituia un eveniment cu totul neaşteptat. Miniatura o reprezenta pe domnişoara de Quercy, fata unui ambasador al Franţei la Curtea lui Henric al VIII-lea. Holbein o pictase în 1532, la puţină vreme după reîntoarcerea ei din Bâle la Londra şi regăseai în acel tablou cea mai bună manieră a maestrului, din epoca cea mai fericită şi mai fecundă a sa.
Când la ora patru şi jumătate fix miniatura a fost scoasă la licitaţie, Galeria era plină până la refuz. Primele oferte lansate pe un ton de politeţe cordială şi un pic şireată, începură de la două mii de lire şi urcară foarte repede la cinci mii. După o mică pauză, ajunseră la şapte mii. Apoi urmă o nouă şovăire. În sfârşit competiţia continuă într-o cadenţă alternată, semn că numai doi concurenţi se mai înfruntau. La nouă mii patru sute, urmă o nouă pauză.
― Nouă mii patru sute de lire!

A simple and short, but very sweet love story. I have already read many of Cronin's books and this one wasn't a disappointment either. I really enjoyed indulging into this beautiful love story and just escaping reality for a while. It isn't as "complex" as other stories Cronin has written, but it also has this touch of melancholy and nostalgia to it which charmingly underlines the easiness of his writing style.

Въпреки, че е написана през 1935 г., книгата се чете много леко и бързо. Да, много е наивна, но не неприятно.Повечето книги на автора, които съм чела, са доста тежки и тъжни. Слава богу, тази не е. Когато прочета името му , неизменно изниква спомена за екранизацията на "Цитаделата" с участието на неповторимия Бен Крос. Не знам дали сега би била актуална и интересна. Но Арчибалд Кронин си остава един от моите предпочитани автори, по някаква причина.

Not the style I associate with Cronin.
The Citadel, is his master work, and it changed the NHS of his day.
He wrote other books as well of the society in which he lived.
This is plain and simple a 'love story' - well told, with plenty of supportive locations and characters.
It is also smaller than other books of his that I have read.

Събитията в романа и начинът, по който бяха изградени персонажите, създадоха предпоставки за един доста по-драматичен финал. Зрялото решение на Нанси не подхождаше на образа ѝ, персонажът ѝ се разви много бързо, но предполагам се налагаше, за да има щастлив край. Като цяло много приятно и развлекателно четиво.

Libro entretenido, que se lee con rapidez, pero que no tiene cuestiones que resolver. ni te planteas nada en referencia a lo narrado, no despierta interés. Una pega, el mensaje de fondo de que la mujer en su casa en feliz y la que busca una carrera no para ser independiente, no.

Auteur populaire des années 60-70 AJ Cronin appuie sa notoriété sur des romance plutôt bonne enfant. Classifié à l'époque comme roman de gare, ces lectures faciles et rapides permettaient aux femmes de s'emmouracher de la personne qu'elle n'aurait pas due. La dame aux œillets n'échappe pas à ce canevas. Mais qu'en est-il de nos jours ? Je pense que ce roman a beaucoup vieilli et les us et coutumes ont changé et c'est sans doute pas plus mal. J'ai trouvé que cet auteur écossais manque profondément de sensibilité féminie pour écrire les émotions de ces personnages féminins qui sont vites débordés, anorexiques ou hystériques pour traduire ce qu'elles ressentent. C'est dommage ...

Este o poveste drăguță, dar cât se poate de previzibilă. Am vrut să întrerup lectura la un moment dat, dar curiozitatea și speranța unui final neașteptat m-au îndemnat să înghit în sec și să continui. Deși, trebuie să recunosc, la sfârșit am rămas (puțin) dezamăgită. Poate că am descoperit aceasta carte prea târziu... Sau poate prea devreme...
