Trouble and Grace: Historical Women's Fiction Western Adventure

Rate this book
Leah Atkins has long ago made peace with her spinsterhood. At thirty-six years old, she has been a schoolteacher for nearly two decades and is perfectly happy in her routine. Living with her cousins, the Robinson family, teaching a classroom of children, enjoying her flowers and books over the years have given Leah a beautiful life.

But when the Robinsons tell her they are emigrating to the Oregon Territory, Leah’s perfectly crafted life is turned upside down. She has to make the choice between saying good-bye to the only family she has and leaving her students. Though the frontier life was never what Leah wanted, neither can she bear being alone, and so packs up to head west along with the family. Even once the choice is made, she is not sure it’s the right one.

Will Leah be able to find peace again in the west or will the struggle and deprivation of the Oregon Trail make her wish she had never left home?

I got to 50%...

Leah, female lead, grew old with her negative reaction to any kind of change. By 50%, I had had enough. So I am abandoning this book. I tried the first book in the series giving it 3 stars. I did read all of that one. I think if is the author's writing style and plot development that doesn't appeal.

I enjoyed the story and love the characters but…

It felt like a lot of energy was put into making it feel as though there was something wrong with the main character because she was introverted.

Totally enjoyed this series

I have always been fascinated by the pioneers and the wagon trains heading west. It was so interesting to me to read about the same Wagon Train from different women's perspectives. I was wondering if it would be redundant and maybe even boring, but it was actually fascinating to see it from all different angles. From the front of the Wagon train from the back... learning the different women's reasons for coming and their family backgrounds Etc. Totally enjoyed it and can't wait to begin the Oregon at last series.

This last book of the series was on par with the first in terms of character development, engagement, and imagination. I just wish books 2-7 had been as good. Really hoping Leah's story continues in the next series.

Chapter 27: " Growth comes through pain and being able to.stand discomfort, ..."
Main character changes in a very positive way-- taking more opportunities to connect with people rather than retreating from challenges.
