Too long of a separation!
Plot: Orphaned Drew and Harriet are the best of friends. Harriet loves Drew and is thrilled when their fathers' betroth them to each other at 17 years of age. *gulp*. Unfortunately, this isn't something Drew wants. He desperately needs to discover more about his mysterious past and to amass his OWN wealth. Sadly, Drew's trust fund won't be released if he refuses the match. So the pair make a pledge, Harriet will wait patiently until Drew is ready to return home and that's exactly what she does! Drew leaves Harriet on their wedding day and stays away for 12 YEARS! He only writes letters.
Drew finally decides to return home after a near death experience in the American wilderness. He now knows what he wants and that's a real marriage with Harriet. Drew doesn't count on the beautiful woman that's standing in her place. What happened to that gawky girl with spots on her face? This new Harriet is formidable. This will not be easy, Drew is going to have to fight for what he wants. A problem Drew doesn't count on is his bff's little sister. She's madly in love with Drew and plots to break the couple up.
So can these two finally have a life together or is it too late?
Liked: 1. Harriet was such a strong, capable woman. She took over Drew's shipping company (he doesn't know), 2 estates, his ward, and bore the brunt of gossipers. She deserves sainthood! She really deserved a life instead of waiting patiently for Drew to return someday. 2. Drew was a good guy, but selfish to Harriet. Though, he did tell her from the beginning not to wait for him. He needed to find his place in the world. I get it, but 12 years was way too long! 3. I loved their friendship! After all these years, they still trusted one another and nobody was going to tear them apart. 4. The writing was well done with fast pacing. The tiny twist at the end was a nice surprise! 5. Romance? It was a slow burn (except 1st night) because they are strangers and needed to get to know each other again. I liked watching their friendship develop into something real.
Dislike: 1. Again, 12 years is way too long! It's not realistic that any woman would wait that ridiculous amount of time for one man. Not even for Brad Pitt would I wait that long. 2. Pathetic villain! Priss was just a spoiled brat. 3. On the 1st night back, Harriet let's Drew consummate their marriage. What the hell! She couldn't even hold out for a day? I needed some serious groveling from Drew first
Conclusion: this was a pretty good hr, but it could've been so much better.
For a book that I didn't expect much from I was pleasantly suprised. Drew and Harriet have been friends since they were children. Drew always felt something was missing and finding out the story about his true background drives him to the truth at all expense.
Harriet loves Drew and wants nothing more than to be with him and is delighted when their parents agree and write up a contract to marry them, ensuring Drew has financial security and Harriet isn't used and falling into just someones wife.
All would be well and good except Drew HAS to find his roots and Harriet agrees to wait for him however long it takes as long as he marries her. Little knowing he means to set off that very day to find himself and his own fortune.
12 years pass and finally Drew comes home, both have changed and so much has happened can there be any future for them? Will their marriage be able to go on?
This is such an easy read and it goes from present to past and back again but it is done so well it is easy to follow. I really enjoyed this book and would definately read more by this author 4/5 for me.
I am not keen on heroes who are engaged or married and then disappear only to return years later. I reluctantly admit that Eve Byron takes that furry old gambit and manages to pull it off a whole lot better than most.
Loved the story...not too impressed with the hero in the beginning, but hated the manipulative Pris and her horrific behavior no excuse will i give for it despite their attempts at trying too. love the twists and turns
