Out of one web and into another… Charlie has accepted that the only way out of the mafia is outlined in chalk. And although her boss may have changed, the rules are the same. Do what it takes to stay alive. Keep your head down. Don’t stir up trouble. So long as she does that, nobody gets hurt. And more importantly, Everett Daniels stays alive. But apparently that’s easier said than done. Because when the boss’s murder sparks a city-wide turf war and Charlie is tasked with removing the competition for good, and she’s going to have to stir up a whole lot of trouble to get out of this alive. It’s been a year since Everett watched the woman he loved die at the hands of the Lazlo Cristiani. A year of sleepless nights and alcohol washed nightmares. A year of rebuilding his life, one piece at a time. Now working as a private detective, Everett has been tasked with proving the Mafia Commissions’ involvement with a recent string of murders. And he’ll start by learning more about Lazlo’s new companion, the alluring and hauntingly familiar woman known only as Esther.
I'm so excited I didn't have to wait too long to read this one! Overall, it was a wonderful sequel to Bearcat. The story has a steady pace, which kept my interest and attention. There was a lot of character development in this one with all the players at the table! Some twists I didn't see coming at all. I read the book in one sitting. There was a point on which I was not sure if we were going to have a happy or sad ending! (Not sharing spoilers!)
Wow I loved the ending of this duology! The author kept me engaged to the very end. I loved the storyline - taking place in a future with a 1920s theme, complete with mobsters, flappers and AIs with names from Gatsby. The characters were great, fun banter, and lots of wide-eyed adventure/suspense as the mains work to find their way out the trouble.
This duology was a good one. The action kept on going and the world-building was superb. The characters were well-written, and for once, the happy ending wasn't handed to them on a platter. And Warren named one of the guards after her dog, which is just so wholesome.
