Anyone reaching middle age or older will eventually ask the question . . . How can I best navigate the ambiguity and vagaries of aging?
Luckily, we now have Dr. Carol Monson’s book, Aging Optimally, which carefully articulates health-related components needed to mature favorably and effectively.
This is a two-part book. Part one offers views about health and aging as a part of the human condition. Dr. Monson presents evidence-based examinations of our physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and social reactions through our journey to maturity. Part two examines what we can do to age optimally, including, e.g., complementary and alternative forms of medicine, non-Western medicine, prayer, meditation, massage, homeopathy, acupuncture, nutrition, and energy therapies.
As an Osteopathic physician approaching dimensions of aging, Dr. Monson holds true to her training. Osteopaths work with the interrelated unity of the body’s systems to heal illness and maintain good health. So, Dr. Monson presents and explains many components of wellness and healing that affect the mind, body and spirit as we age.
Throughout the book, Dr. Monson demonstrates how much she values aging, and how much she needs to help us through this process.
Aging Optimally can be used by curious individuals interested in living life to the fullest, academics studying theories of human development, and even physicians who seek references and alternatives to guide their aging patients through the complex combination of life’s challenges and stressors.
I highly recommend Aging Optimally. It is comprehensive and thorough, yet readable and very interesting. Dr. Monson’s book is certain to help all of us to be as resilient and healthy as possible as we face age-related changes

This book was exceptional in outlining tools available for health. I would highly recommend it to anyone, at any age. At the most basic level, I believe, "the positive and negative thoughts and messages we send our body encourage or discourage it from healing". I used to follow this type of mindset but got knocked off course for awhile so I was very happy to read this exhaustive review of tools. I really liked the talk about decreasing inflammation and the section on stress. I have been hearing more and more about epigenetics these days and the author's discussion made me feel hopeful that I may be able to influence my children's and my genes. I was surprised to read about the connection between the heart and the mind. It left me with the feeling that the heart has some intelligence. There was a excellent discussion on happiness. I will be referring to sections I liked best to keep motivated and on track. I feel stronger for having read it. As the saying goes, "knowledge is power".

This book should be required reading for high school seniors as they step forward into their adult lives. The first part of the book provides an easy to understand overview of one’s body, with simple to comprehend scientific terminology that can help set them on a path to healthy living. That said, mid-lifers, as well as seniors, should definitely read this book to help correct paths they may have taken through life that can be corrected now before it’s too late. The interconnection of mind, body and spirit, makes us who we are and how we live. If all three work together in harmony, one is able to enjoy life to the fullest and hopefully achieve greater longevity in good physical and mental health. At 77 myself, I’m working to get the most out of my remaining years in reasonably good health through following the concepts in this book.

I am honored to give my very heart felt review of Dr Carol Monson's book, which is one of a kind. It's not only written for medical and lay person, searching for a real fact based education on a cross section of Western, Eastern, many complimentay and alternative healing modalities.I loved the self help questions at the end of the chapters. To many skeptics there is research and science based links. You will come away wanting to delve into so many avenues of health care you were not aware of. It's about time a collection of health care modalities are so eloquently put forth.

Ever think to yourself, “With all my experience, I could write a book?” Trust me, it’s harder than you might imagine.

Dr. Monson is an experienced family physician in Michigan. In her book, she has successfully integrated both her experience and her philosophy on healing, aging and the things traditional and non-traditional medicine have to offer. And she’s done it in such a way that you can read any of the 30-plus chapters in any order and walk away with something practical.

Excellent best book I’ve ever read pertaining to overall health. Written by a retired university practicing professor of a Major university medical center. Her insights are amazing exploring mental & spiritual along with all medicines from around the world. Practically written for the average to follow but exploring topics for her peers to consider. Helps to provide a layout for improving health with end of chapter worksheets. A beautiful book that I will continue to read & refer to for the rest of my life! I highly recommend to anyone looking to improve your health!!! Thank you Dr Monson!

I am 80 on my next b’day. When I picked up this book I learned more about myself, my friends and my husband. It is a wealth of knowledge that is easily read in chapters and doesn’t have to be read at one setting! Kudos to this brilliant author. She knows her geriatrics!
