In your heart you feel the longing---an emptiness that can't be satisfied by food, or friendships, or entertainment, or success, or anything this world can offer. Only God can fill the void. More than you know, you hunger for God. In Hungry for God, critically acclaimed author Margaret Feinberg puts you in touch with your desire for intimacy with your Creator and what it takes to find fulfillment. Feinberg writes, 'The sound of his voice is spiritual nourishment, his voice a banquet for my soul---every syllable a tasty morsel, every expression flavored with love.' With rare insight into the Scriptures, human nature, and the heart of God, Feinberg invites you to discover the ways in which God speaks to you not from the top of some holy mountain, but in the midst of your everyday affairs. Learning to hear God's voice isn't as much a destination as it is a journey, and if you travel far enough, you'll find yourself abiding in the presence of God. Passionate, honest, and filled with wisdom and inspiration, Hungry for God will help you cultivate the holy intimacy your spirit craves.
A self-described "hot mess," Margaret Feinberg is a popular Bible teacher and speaker at churches and leading conferences such as Catalyst, Thrive, and Women of Joy. She was recently named one of 50 women most shaping culture and the church today by Christianity Today, one of the 30 Voices who will help lead the church in the next decade by Charisma magazine and one of the ’40 Under 40’ who will shape Christian publishing by Christian Retailing magazine. Margaret lives in Morrison, Colorado, with her husband, Leif, and their superpup, Hershey. She believes some of the best days are spent in jammies, laughing, and being silly.
This was the book that made me fall in love w/ Margaret Feinberg as an author. In this book she offers some raw and honest insight about how what it means to be in a relationship with God. Her words are simultaneously refreshing, encouraging and convicting. I would highly recommend to anyone who is seeking a closer walk.
Having read Scouting the Divine and parts of Wonderstruck, I knew Feinberg's fresh, lively style and her insights into the spiritual life. The title Hungry for God captured my attention because I've become aware of my own hunger for something more in relationship to Christ and aware that other believers are searching for something more in their experience of God's presence and peace. Feinberg's focus is on hearing God's voice in the ordinary and everyday events of life. Does God speak? Does He want us to speak to Him? Does He long for a relationship with us? What role does Scripture have in the divine dialogue? Feinberg presents provocative comments regarding prayer and practical insight into our spiritual lives, asserting that as we seek God, He stirs up our spiritual appetites to seek Him more. An excellent study guide makes this useful for either the individual or study group.
Slow down and hear from God. Lovely. Just what I needed. This is the resounding message I get from this book. It is an incredibly gentle, soothing and heartfelt book. I would recommend this to all Christians. She speaks from her experiences and her mistakes made during her walk with God. It has helped me to draw closer to God and for that I am very appreciative to Ms Feinberg. Thank you!
I love Margaret Feinberg's writing; her words bring forth vivid images and touches of God's world and His work on our hearts. I am thankful for her work "Hungry for God" as it refreshes my yearning to hear God's voice.
I love Margaret Feinberg's way of looking at life. She brings the teachings in the Bible to life with her insights. Her wisdom inspires me and I think others would enjoy this and her other writings.
Hungry for God by Margaret Feinberg is a book not on how to become a Christian but on how to Be one. The book takes the reader through the steps of hearing God, to communicating with him, and drawing on that hunger and stirring for more of Him. God first speaks in a whisper, “The image of a whisper speaks to the posture of our relationship with God. Whispering is ineffective if the person we’re trying to communicate with is on the other side of the room. God doesn’t desire a long-distance relationship, but an intimate one” pg 27 God calls us then shapes us through conviction, spiritual, discovery, prayer, guidance and love. “God will stir the hunger to know Him and love Him more” pg 68 He wants us to ready ourselves for hearing from Him through scripture, liturgy, our thoughts and visions. Journaling can be a spiritual use of communicating with God as you share your dreams and circumstances. God speaks through our conscience and the counsel of others as well. This is a great book for new believers in how to draw near to God and hear Him. It would also make a great book study book for those searching for a closer connection and hunger for God. There are reflection and discussion questions included for a small group or book club setting. The one thing I did not like with the book was the cover. At first site it appears to be a biography of Margaret Feinberg rather than a study on the hunger for God. I would recommend that authors not plaster their own likeness on the front of a book that is focusing on knowing God better, it seems prideful to me. The content is great if you can get past the cover.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review from Zondervan.
I found "Hungry for God, Hearing God's Voice in the Ordinary and the Everyday" to be a surprising blessing.
I must admit that the writing style did not captivate me. I found it lacking in the type of wordsmithing and mystery that I prefer when approaching such a subject. And yet, the style fit the title. Bringing the discussion of hearing God's voice into a rather unembellished presentation makes this an ideal book for the every day reader.
The subject matter is compelling and the biggest difficulty that I had with the book is that I kept putting it down. I would read a paragraph about prayer and feel compelled to stop reading and start praying. It isn't often I have that response to what I'm reading and I think that says more that pretty language or poetic description.
I would recommend this book for anyone who desires to increase their appetite for God and gather practical suggestions that help to "cultivate a seeking heart." Whether you are new in your walk with Christ or have been long on the journey, Hungary for God, has the potential to touch you and awaken within a deeper desire and expectancy to hear from God in ways that just may transform your life.
I received this book free from Amazon Vine in exchange for an honest review of its content.
Short Review: a good introductory book on spiritual growth, but it wasn't anything particularly unique or original. That is not all bad for a book on spiritual growth. Much of it should be basically the same as everyone else. But I have been reading a lot of Catholic and Anglican and others and I think that many of the other Church traditions have thought more about spiritual growth as a Christian than Evangelicals have. I think it is part of their theology that they assume people are already Christian and now need to learn how to live like a Christian.
On the negative side this is why John Paul II said that the Catholic Church now has to evangelize their own. But it is not much different from many evangelicals that get people to the point of conversion and then keep preaching the same basic gospel presentation to them without giving them the additional meat of the transforming power of the gospel.
As a good example of much more meaty discusion of spiritual growth. I will post a review of Richard Rohr's The Art of Letting Go on monday.
I received this book free due to a giveaway on Zondervan's Facebook page. Thank you Zondervan! This was an awesome book! I really wish I had received this book earlier in my Christian walk. It helped me so much in regards to my prayer life and challenged me to think of connecting with God in different ways. I highly recommend this book to others who are seeking to know God more intimately or are looking to go deeper in their prayer life.
i thought there were some good suggestions in here and good theory about listening for God's word. i don't quite remember what they were though. so i should probably read again. i'd say it's worth a read if you're trying to work on deciphering his will in your life. or hard core pornography. just kidding, it's not really about his will.
On more than one occasion I felt as if the author had taken passages directly from my journal. She described many moments when she hungered for God that echoes my own. This thing called life is a marathon, we won't get to the end without the right fuel. Margaret Feinberg gives vivid descriptions of the struggle, and shows how to satiate our hunger by feasting on the love of God! Awesome read!!!
As usual, I like what Margaret has to say--In simplicity, we need to know God, and in reality, in order to know him, we need to spend time with him throughout our day.
I found this practical and helpful to read. A great read if you need a prompting to set aside time to talk to/hear from Jesus; a reminder that it often requires intentionality.
