_______________________________________________________________________________________

'From the blood of the noble serpents he shall rise,
born of the snow and mountains by the star- child
and raised by the wolf under the shadow of the watcher.
Washed with the blood of innocents and wielding the dragon's flame,
he shall rise from the flames and strike at the hosts of hell,
and death shall be his guide to either salvation or destruction.

then the son of the Lion shall travel to the sylvan ocean,
and within find the daughter of the long-lived,
so shall they unite their people as one to follow the river of blood
that the Skymaster has ridden.'

:The Chronicles of Yas, T.E. 1105

Ashar'an Rising is the sequel to Demon Gates (the excellent kickoff to the Nexus Wars series by Robert Day). Does the sequel measure up to its predecessor? In a word: yes.
Day deftly manages multiple point of view characters and no fewer than three separate story arcs in this installment of the series. I often dislike stories with multiple, parallel threads like this; but, to Mr. Day's credit, each separate story arc kept me interested and entertained.
This novel also adds considerable depth to the backstory, and fleshes out the core conflict between two factions of an ancient race. I was a little concerned when the novel launched into a lengthy flashback to an ancient age, but the terminology was presented logically, and the ancient tale was gripping and suitably epic.
Day continues to be a master of swordplay and combat, and his fight scenes are well realized. And there are scenes with epic sorcery, which is always a good thing in a fantasy.
This novel is not quite as polished as the first novel was (although it did not detract from my enjoyment of the story).
But to dwell on the above "nits" is to overlook the excellence of this novel. I am fully engaged in the story now and I can honestly say that I am a fan of Mr. Day's work. He continues to present a refreshing take on the genre, and takes the tried and true elements of fantasy and somehow makes them feel fresh and exciting.

Ashar'an Rising is the sequel to Demon Gates. The story continues following Vald on his quest to stop the demons horde from destroying the world. Through the book he continues to learn through the magic of the Dragon's Tear pendant left to him by his mother.

I don't want to get into the plot much since I will most likely let spoilers of the first book slip if I try to go into any detail. This book differs from the first book in that it focuses a lot more on some characters other than just Vald. The adventure follows Prince Andrak on the mission that he and his sister set out upon. We also see more from Kyle and Thorgast as they attempt to help Thorgast's people.

Personally I would have to say that I did enjoy the first book a little bit more, but I think that is because I really enjoy Vald as a character (not that there is anything wrong with the others, but I do play favorites) and this book did not feature him quite as much. Robert continues to write wonderful action scenes and describes his massive world in the right amount of detail. You do not spend pages reading about each mountain in a huge range, but visual images are made clear by his descriptions. His webpage is also an excellent tool having all kinds of extra information including some excellent maps to help you see the journey everyone is taking.

The only downfall of the book is that since this one just came out I'm sure there will be a decent wait for the next book in the series. Excellent work again Mr. Day.

This is what a sequel is all about!

Picking right up where Demon Gates left off, Ashar'an Rising continues to follow the adventures of Valdieron as he attempts to fight the invasion of demons into his world. This story also focuses on other characters besides Valdieron, but those you have been introduced to in the first book.

Using the power of the pendant he was given by his mother, Valdieron also continues his studies to become a master swordsman and also starts to learn how to use magic.

The author does a fantastic job weaving multiple storylines together to create a well developed tale in a world brought vividly and masterfully to life. Descriptive settings, colorful characters, and well executed battle scenes leave you on your toes and wanting more! I found myself eagerly turning page after page, wondering what was going to happen next!

Robert, I eagerly await the release of the next in this series. Good job once more!

Fun

Good book for fans of old school fantasy. Good action sequences and story arc. Does tend to jump back and forth between characters. Going to be mad if there is no third book

Review (by BMR guest reviewer Carlyn)

This is book two in the Nexus Wars Saga which is set in the land of Kil'Tar. When we last left Kil'Tar we saw Valdieron continuing on his quest to find all the pieces of a relic which will help to secure the seals which keeps the demons out of their world. Using the necklace, his mother let him called the dragon's tear, he continues to learn how to become a master swordsman and begins a new lesson in magic.

Unlike the last book this does not mainly focus on Valdieron but instead the focus is spread between several different characters such as Prince Andrak and his journey to see the Elves, Princess Kitara and her kidnap and Thorgast and Kyle on the journey to his homeland.
There is still an amazing amount of action in this book but I wasn't sure if I liked my attention pulled in so many different directions but on the other hand I can slowly see the pieces of this puzzle coming together.

The writing is still a great standard and you still feel a great need to see where this story will go and who will win this epic war.

This is a great series to look out for and I can't wait to read the next installment.

I give Ashar'an Rising 4 out of 5 stars

I really am enjoying this story, and looking forward to the next installment. However, for some reason this book failed to really pull me in and keep me entranced with its happenings, at least until the end. I think the pace was just a touch too slow for me, as I found myself hoping things would move along a little faster more than once, and unlike the first book, in the end it felt like to overall story had not progressed as far as the books length should merit. I think more frequent changes in POV would have helped to keep it moving as well. Don't get me wrong though, it's not a boring book, and lets face it, our impressions are heavily influenced by our own moods and lives as we read. There is plenty of action, great characters, original plot elements, and few of the editorial issues that can plague independent author's books. Definitely a series I'll be continuing to follow in the future.

Wow! What a great sequel! Really impressed by the first book this one made Robert day one of my favorite authors! Well done! Ashar'an Rising like is predecessor Demon Gates had plenty of action! It had some major new characters introduced which were developed well! The main character, Valdieron, is a great hero who started off the series as a young kid who knew nothing and is quickly growing up! The description the the different kinds of demons is great and makes it easy to picture them in your head! Will read it again!

I liked this book and it is a very nice sequel though I would have liked it more if there weren't so many chapters without Valderion. It's going to be a difficult wait for the third book.
