The problem I have with this series is Selene. I like both cats Selene and the new familiar for the crap piece of shit witch Lavender named Checkers. I do not like Lav I do think in future books she will be listed as Autistic but that is no excuse. In this story we learn that Selene spent 16 years with Lavender who basically is self centered, only cares about herself, is very introverted and rude, and even with her new cat after she is rescued, which I don't know why anyone really bothered because she is such a shit, she is neglectful. She is supposed to be less neglectful but her cat Checkers, for one example, is allergic to mint and she doesn't bother to remove mint tea from the house causing her cat symptoms. What if they were deadly symptoms like how some people react to peanut butter? Would she even notice her cat dying? Anyway, Selene is obviously suffering from neglect and other trauma suffered at the hands of Lavender and her snarkyness and meanness is her defense mechanism. I am pissed that Cora basically starts doing the same sort of distancing and ignoring of Selene that Lavender did. She even gets a dog which is like getting a new child because your first one you don't love as much. I don't like how Selene just becomes meaner and meaner in the books she is hard to like and I like the cats in books better than the main character and I am sick of Cora and her family and her too good to be true rich husband and all that junk. I wish the stories could just be Selene and Checkers solving mysteries with a different human who was a very much background side character.
This is a short sequel to the series. It's cute and explains how the two central characters met. I enjoy these magical animal series. They are usually quick reads and are a nice change from the biographies, political tomes, and other genres I read that interest me. There is a part of me that would absolutely adore having any of my dogs, cats, hamsters or gerbils talk to me. I've shared my life with many, many, fur-babies over the decades. Imagine how much better it would have been had I known what was going on in those little heads? Series such as Nin.e Lives Magic give me the chance to imagine a little bit of it.
I read this with the audiobook version of Selene's voice in my head and it made it funnier. This is the "origin story" of the wonderfully comedic and chaotic relationship between Cora and Selene. A cute, quick backstory.
This is a cute novella that introduces the reader to Cora and her soon to be familiar, Selene. We get a little bit of backstory on how Selene came to be bonded to Cora before they discover Aunt Lavender is missing.
Cute and Snarky. The makings of a perfect Witch and her Familiar team in cozy content. This prequel left me ready to buy the first novel in the series because I definitely want more.
This was fun. I haven’t checked out the actual series yet but this gave a good taste of Cora and Selene’s dynamic and gave you a vibe of what the actual books will be like.
