Sheri Stewart Tepper was a prolific American author of science fiction, horror and mystery novels; she was particularly known as a feminist science fiction writer, often with an ecofeminist slant.
Born near Littleton, Colorado, for most of her career (1962-1986) she worked for Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood, where she eventually became Executive Director. She has two children and is married to Gene Tepper. She operated a guest ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
She wrote under several pseudonyms, including A.J. Orde, E.E. Horlak, and B.J. Oliphant. Her early work was published under the name Sheri S. Eberhart.
One of my favourite read again books by S Tepper, it's very hard to find now and very expensive too, so if you come across it , snap it up. It's again a S Tepper strong female lead character who is trying to live her life but has a lot of hardships and obstacles to face. It delves into the realms of mysticism ,magic and romance as Marianne a good person; encounters strange adventures in different worlds to survive against dark forces. Highly Recommended
My mom read all three of thease to me the first time. I've read them a couple of times sence then. Its about a girl named Marianne. Who is very shy because he life has not been very comfortable. Her parents were killed in a tragic accident and her brother has been very odd since then. He sends her presents that she dosen't like. And one day a stranger comes into her life and helps her reilize that her brother has been tring to kill her with magic. You would think that this leads to your typical story but somehow it transends the normal realm of fantisy and ends up in the realm of truly weird. There is a laundry-mat where sofas end up in the washing mashines and a library she can't escape were the books move. There is a game where when you roll the dice you are transported into the game and into the heads of the players. Beautifuly writen and very hard to get a hold of it is worth a read.
I've loved the Marianne books since I first read them 30 years ago. They are one of my favourite comfort reads, if I'm sick and don't have the energy for something new. I hadn't read them for a while, and had forgotten lots of details, so it was rather like reading them for the first time, and I still love them all. Sheri Tepper was one of my favourite authors, these novels are totally unlike her science fiction, and I once read an interview with where she said that she'd had her first book (The Revenants) rejected, so she wrote these in one quick burst and had them accepted, which led to the others being published. These could be categorised as urban fantasy, they involve magic and shadow worlds - there is a discussion at one point about alternate universes, but the context and characters make it believable. The characters are well-drawn and there are some very funny passages (e.g the Chimera, & "Prince Charming").
