Dr. Jake McClure's basset hound has fallen in love. With a single mom, her adorable twins, and the orphaned kittens they rescued. Man's best friend suddenly won't budge from Jeannie Brousard's house.
Lyn grew up loving books. Her favorite night of the week was Friday night, when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood in Illinois. She’d spend those two hours chatting with the driver of the Bookmobile and the librarian and making the big decision of the week — which books to check out! In those distant days, children were limited in how many books they could check out. Lyn could only take home six a week — and there were so many to choose from. Her favorites were Cotton in my Sack by Lois Lenski, The Little House series and the One of a Kind Family series. Later, she discovered Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances! This love of books led to a desire to write. Lyn won prizes in high school and college for her poetry and, not surprisingly, Lyn became a history and English teacher. When she became a mother, she gave up teaching, and while raising a son and a daughter, she began working on her first novel. Then she wrote her second and third. Long years of rejection followed — as it does for most writers. Finally in 1997, Lyn got "the call." Her first book, Never Alone, was chosen to appear in the first year of the new Love Inspired line. Lyn has written many articles on writing and the emerging Christian Booksellers Assoc. (CBA) fiction market. In 2006, Lyn's book, Chloe, is a finalist for the RWA's RITA, the highest award in the romance genre in the inspirational category. Now, Lyn spends her days writing books that show the power of divine as well as human love. Her nest is empty and she and her real life hero, her husband, have more and more time to spend together in their home on a lake in the lovely northwoods. And books are still dear to her heart.
Love, love, love, love this book! Bummer is adorable and makes me want to get my own dog from the animal shelter. I love how the twins and Bummer were matchmakers in this book. Great storyline and hooked me from the beginning. Sometimes we can't judge people just by looking at them and I think this story makes a great point. Judgement should only come from Christ. We should be the ones to care for those less fortunate. I love how everyone cared about the twins and Jeannie. The side story we get with Jake's father and himself helps us understand where Jake is coming from and why he has such a hard time getting close to people. In the end the twins pull on everyone's heart strings. Can't wait to read the next story in this series!
I know I'm a SUCKER for a Romance with pets in the story, but this story was just the sweetest, most adorable, most heart warming story story I've ever read. Not usually adjectives you'd use with a romance, but no other adjectives fit right. On a COLD, Winter evening, Dr. Jake McClure DVM reluctantly attends a church pot-luck social, with his faithful, Basset hound, Bummer in tow. Meanwhile, single Mom of 7-yr old twin girls, Jeannie Broussard enters the church dinner with her daughters, who have found 2 orphaned kittens, freezing in the snow. Jeannie agrees to let the girls keep the kittens, who the girls name, Twinkie and Peanut Butter. Comedic chaos quickly ensues when Bummer instantly takes Twinkie, and Peanut Butter under his paw, grooming them. Becoming a surrogate father of sorts. Also bonding with the twins. To the point that he sneaks away from Dr. Jake, and ends up with Jeannie, the girls, and kittens. Not wanting to budge from Jeannie Broussard's home. Baying mournfully whenever he's seperated from the kittens and girls. Through all of this Jake & Jeannie forge a friendship and attraction. Jeannie goes to work for Jake as his Vet assitant...I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED, Dr. Jake. Loved Jeannie. The girls were adorable. But I think the real star of this book (at least for me) was the heart melting bond between Bummer, and his kittens, and the girls. Also loved how Lyn incorporated 'Habitat for Humanity' and the plight of Shelter animals (all the umwanted puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats.) I even came to like Jake's Dad, Dan. And Loved that Jeannie and Brooke became friends. And pleasantly surprised that she hooked up with Jake's Dad....Just a really GREAT book!!! I can even picture this as a made- for - TV movie on Hallmark, or The Hallmark Hall of Fame, or abc Family. :-)
This was a great story!! I thoroughly enjoyed it with all the twists and turns. Many times throughout the book I found myself smiling. I would love to have this storyline continue into a series. Looking forward to reading more books by Lyn Cote.
Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Even if you're not generally a romance novel reader, you will enjoy reading about these characters and the conflicts that they encounter.
Would you believe a dog can play matchmaker? You might after reading this lovely romance from Lyn Cote. The story starts out with a fundraiser for an animal shelter in a small town in Wisconsin, just outside of Milwaukee. Dr. Jake McClure is behind the fundraiser and his basset hound, Bummer, takes to two orphaned kittens who are adopted by Mimi and Cindy, the twin nieces of Jeannie Broussard, a single mother working nights as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home.
The fact that Bummer refuses to be parted for any length of time from the kittens or the twins is played for laughs, and it gets Jake and Jeannie talking about their respective lives. Jeannie finds herself working for Jake soon enough as his office manager when his previous manager goes on maternity leave.
There’s surprising depth to these characters: Jake is a decent, hardworking vet who wants to run a no-kill shelter; Jeannie is a softhearted single mother who puts her girls first; Dan, Jake’s abrasive surgeon father, comes for a visit and reveals that he’s got a heart problem. Even Brooke Hyde, set up at first as Jeannie’s rival for Jake, is a divorcee who simply wants to have friends. Brooke remarks at one point that her husband “got custody of our friends” and many divorced people will relate to that. I related to her on many different levels.
I loved this story. The supporting characters, notably Mike and Ginny, townsfolk who like each other as much as they like Jake and Jeannie, are terrific and real. Mike won my heart with his sense of humor and his honesty in dealing with both Jake and Dan. Highly recommended.
This is the second book in the series. This is another good read. This time I have to say that Bummer the Basset hound tends to steal the show. After Jeannie's twins find 2 orphaned kittens Bummer decides he his job is to look after them. It is so cute to read about the bond between these animals. I love the interaction between the twins, animals and adults. This is a touching story and I loved every minute of it. I am eagerly awaiting book 3 in this series. One thing this books shows is that sometimes accepting a blessing or a hand is actually a blessing to others. This book shows how some find it hard to accept help thinking it shows weakness when infact the giver is just wanting to share and make life a little easier and learning to accept blesses both people. This issue is one I have experienced from the givers side, I have friend I will often take extra produce I have been given but they insist on paying for it when it was a free gift to me. This really annoys me cos they will do things for me and not except payment but wont accept it in return. This books deals with just this issue.
This is a captivating, delightful, easy to read story that will leave you feeling good because you read it. It is the story of how two people who have had very rough childhoods can have their fears lessened and their faith strengthened, overcoming much of what held them back. Animals play a major role in this story, as Jake is a veterinarian and also involved with a no-kill animal shelter. Bummer, Jake's dog, and the two kittens in the story will steal your heart, as will the sweetness of the romance that develops. The only negative I found at all is that the dialogue seems a tiny bit awkward a couple of times; this is when the author is giving details of an illness or medical treatment, but it does not really detract much from the story. I highly recommend this book, and intend to read the other book in this New Friends Street series that I haven't yet read.
I received an arc copy of Daddy in the Making. I was excited to read this story because it was different. You have Jeannie raising her sister's twin daughters. I really liked that aspect of the story. I also liked that this was not an over powering Christan romance. Lyn did a great job developing the characters and having you care for them. I also enjoyed that these characters were not perfect and had some struggles to overcome. Overall this was a delightful read! This was my first Lyn Cote book and will not be my last.
You have to understand what you're getting when you read this...it's not this classic, incredibly written, incredibly deep story. It's a cute "mental bubblegum" type book meant to be knocked out in a day or two. And for that purpose, I loved it! I enjoyed the characters and thought it was a cute story...again, not incredibly developed or anything like that, but very good for it's intended purpose.
I enjoyed this book but I didn't love this book. I really liked the characters and the general story line but at times the story felt a little all over the place.
Vet, Dr Jake McClure's basset hound found the two kittens that Jeannie and her two nieces adopted to be his little family. Will the veterinarian and the mom get together?
Once upon a time, Lyn Cote wrote a trilogy for 'Love Inspired' including 'Loving Constance', 'Testing Patience' and 'Saving Grace'. It was a lovely series... I was so happy to have found something by 'Love, Inspired' that was actually well-written and enjoyable. Not to mention inspirational.
How far Cote has fallen.
I have suspicions as to what happened. First, she went watered-down spirituality. I know this, because SHE QUOTES 'THE MESSAGE' FOR HER SCRIPTURE VERSE in this book. 'The Message' isn't even a Bible - it's a paraphrase, and one of *THE* worst, sacrilegious ones out there. I was disgusted to see it.
Second, she very likely fell in with the 'Love Inspired' clique, because suddenly her writing is just like everyone else's, her stories are banal and look like yet another one where the topics were drawn on slips of paper from a fishbowl in Melissa Endlich's office. GAHHHH!!!
In this book, we have a single *AUNT* of *TWINS* (see above paragraph) who find kittens in the snow, and lo and behold, there's a VET at the church dinner their at - and he doesn't even normally GO to those kinds of events, so obviously Cote really stretched to make THIS one happen, too.
And of course she totally deserves a free house (with a GARAGE!!), so the story is about getting her money for that. Oh, and it's about the vet's dream of having a special shelter for unwanted animals to bond with special needs kids. ((See two paragraphs above.))
I. Just. CAN'T. It's all awful. Hallmark comes up with better storylines than this, and... No. Just... I'm done I made it 18 pages, and threw it at the wall.
Not even sure I want to crack the cover of New Friends #3, at this point.
This book is absolutely phenomenal. I loved seeing inside both of Jake and Jeannie's heads and seeing their thoughts. I can't say any more without spoiling the secrets of these two wonderful characters, but their backstories are both equally as touching and sad, and I loved watching their characters fall in love. (Side note: Bummer and the kids are brilliant matchmakers. Their antics kept me laughing throughout the story!) I found myself connecting with both Jake and Jeannie, and there were certain parts in this story where they were upset and I could feel their pain as my own. The emotions were perfectly written in this story, and I was amazed by the beautiful character dynamic in those novel. If this book would be made into a movie, I would be thrilled!
I loved the main characters. Daddy Dan was a jerk and never quite figured out why. Yes he suffered a terrible tragedy but not sure why he took that out on his son. still the match making twins and the doggie were adorable and I would read it again. I would recommend it
