‘Arcadia’ is a 648-line rhyming, narrative poem that explores how our modern existential crisis of acute anxiety has been inflamed by the phenomenon of 21C consumerism that has leaked into the god-shaped hole scooped out by secular modernity.
The five-canto poem argues that even though our symptoms are psychological, our problems are philosophical at their root, and so urges us to overcome nihilism by embracing solitude, individuality, freedom, beauty, and art.
In 2021, ‘Arcadia’ was illustrated and sold as a work of fine art at Christie’s New York, where it broke records and became the most expensive poem ever sold at $525,000. In May 2022 ‘Arcadia’ had its museum premiere at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.
The poet hits the nail on the head regarding the sorry state of our culture- constant distractions by social media like tik-tok, instagram, facebook, the mindless, numbing activity of watching "reality tv", worthless movies with prequels, sequels, and political propaganda disguised as news on cable tv. But I think her writing was too much "in your face", and so, rather amateurish. As a published poet myself, I've found that the more subtle approaches have more impact when trying to make a point.
