Heidegger, Art, and Postmodernity offers a radical new interpretation of Heidegger's later philosophy, developing his argument that art can help lead humanity beyond the nihilistic ontotheology of the modern age. Providing pathbreaking readings of Heidegger's The Origin of the Work of Art and his notoriously difficult Contributions to Philosophy (From Enowning), this book explains precisely what postmodernity meant for Heidegger, the greatest philosophical critic of modernity, and what it could still mean for us today. Exploring these issues, Iain D. Thomson examines several postmodern works of art, including music, literature, painting, and even comic books, from a post-Heideggerian perspective. Clearly written and accessible, this book will help readers gain a deeper understanding of Heidegger and his relation to postmodern theory, popular culture, and art."
I should rate this work with a 2; however, because I felt the need to upgrade my familiarity/understanding of Heidegger's philosophy as preparation to reading "White Noise", I read Thomoson's work, which accomplished that task. So therefore, I award it with a 5. I soured on Thomson's presentation because it became clear that he was using Heidegger as a means to proselytize (or propagandize) his own "idealistic" agenda. (And, I'll leave my opinions on that unsaid.) But, I shall cite a version of the mantra that proliferated throughout his text like red rooted pig weed in a poorly tended garden: "We are thus moving from modern subjectivism to the late-modern enframing of reality insofar as we understand and relate to all things, ourselves included, as nothing but intrinsically meaningless resources standing by for endless optimization."(58) Here, I want to say is a particularly ugly non- sequitur, but if taken as an expression of opinion rather than as an argument, it becomes instead a commonplace expression of hubris. And for this reason, Thomson's work is a zero.
