Third re-read: 19.08.2021
I had to rush the last chapter because, you know, there's a certain book that came out today that needed my attention. That said, this series is good, I just wish that one) it had more Lucien, and two) were new adult instead of young adult because I desperately need sexy times; even though they have sex, we don't get it described. But still, Caia is a kind-hearted soul that is put in a bad situation and Lucien is a hot alpha; together they would be a great couple if they would actually get their heads out of their asses :P That said, I enjoyed this re-read, though it doesn't beat book one simply because Lucien is barely in it.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*It has too little Lucien*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
This review is purely for me and does contain spoilers and lots of facts from the book to keep myself in the know at all time. It's also incredibly long and really detailed.

Second re-read: 12.05.2018
We're back with my re-read of Caia ‘Cy’ Ribeiro (18), the hybrid of half a magik, a witch and half lykan and her Pack Leader, Lucien Líder (24). Though they are mates; blessed by Gaia, they decided that they would not be a mated couple. This is the fault of miscommunication and acting irrationally. The world is on the brick of war between the Daylight Coven and the Midnight Coven, and not everything is as it seems, is so black and white. But who can Caia trust, when she is so alone? There's also the fact that an ex is back, a Head of a coven is determent to use Caia as a weapon and Caia's heart is breaking.
He smiled gently as Caia glanced back at him, her eyes wide with the exhilaration of being somewhere she could really try out her magik. With that quick glance she turned back to listen to Marion, leaving Lucien behind.
And that was exactly what he was afraid of.

Overall, I must say that I'm relived that I still like the series despite of my reading slump for the past year. Sure, the rating has gone down on both this book and the first book, but I'm not surprised. I'm just glad I didn't end up disliking it this time around reading it. Now, what I don't like is how little Lucien is in it. There was so much Caia being alone that you can't feel any connection between her and Lucien. It kinda destroys the book and the story a bit. Sure, I understand the need to write some heartbreaks, but for a heartbreak to really be felt, you have to be seeing them more broken up about it, yet we barely saw Lucian.
Caia pelted straight into the heart of the woodland, the added feeling of impotence peddling her speed. She hated that she felt this way, hated the rage that gripped a hold of her heart until she was almost blind with the pain. This was what it meant to be his mate. To hurt with a jealous longing so intense it was as supernatural as the world she lived in. Jealousy, she was beginning to realize, was like a cancer. It ate at your very being.

Also, in book one's review, I wrote about the balance between the couple: on how to write a balanced couple with a powerful, strong Alpha male character and a powerful - not submissive - female character without putting either down a level to make the other look more. And since we barely see them together, barely see Lucien, we have yet to see how balanced they are. This is a struggle for me. I need a strong alpha male, and in this book, I felt like he was put aside while Caia was everything. I don't remember how things were in book three, so I'll just have to wait and see. Though I must say I'm not all that interested in Jaeden and Ryder's POV. They are cute and all, but I just need Lucien.
“When Lucien was a boy - after everything that happened with Rafe and Griffin - he was so confused and scared. He knew something was terribly wrong. Anyway, for a while he used to check the house over before he went to bed - every closet, every nook, every window, every door. And then he’d get angry because he thought he was being a coward. Albus took him aside one day and told him that courage was not the absence of fear, but the ability to walk into unknown territory despite it.”

Facts from the book:
I've put these in a spoilers tag simply because it's a long as list.
“You should go to her,” Caia told him, her voice flat and emotionless.
She knew right away that her tone had sent him into lockdown - he jerked away from her, his face frozen, his eyes hard. “Yeah. Glad you’re OK.”
And then he was gone.
She stared at her suite door, wishing she didn’t have any pride, that she could yell out after him and tell him she didn’t care if he loved Rose, he was her mate so he had to stay with her.
Marion clucked, “He sat by your bedside for the last few hours you know.”
“Was he with Rose before that?”
The witch’s silence confirmed the affirmative.

Other characters:
I've put these in a spoilers tag simply because it's a long as list.
Hindsight sucked. In fact hindsight should be assassinated.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Young Adult) Paranormal Romance.

Damn, this series are actually better the second time reading it.. I love it! Samantha Young is an excellent author, who captures all the readers attention. I'm pretty sure, that in a year or two, i'll end up reading this series again. Yeah, it's that good!
Lucien and Caia are so damn amazing together. I ship them completely!

In 'River Cast', you don't just get POV's from Caia and Lucien, but from Jaeden and Ryder as well. First time reading this book, i didn't like that, cause i wanted as much as possible of Lucien.. Now, though, it was great reading how they saw Lucien and Caia, and that you got their story too.

You even get their enemy's POV. Not much, but still, you get enough to know that something wicked is about to happen. The end of this book, i remember killed me the last time i read it, would simply make a person desperate to read the next book as soon as possible. Hello, more Lucien?! A war coming up?! Jealousy and betrayal? I can't wait, even though i know what will happen :P
New rate: 4.5 stars.

First read review:
‘River Cast’ by Samantha Young was just as great as book #1! Samantha is a fantastic author, and she keeps the readers well satisfied. I give the book 4 stars :) The characters keep growing on me, and i love Lucien even more at the end of the book. Samantha had me really frustrating when both Caia and Lucien refused to admit that they loved each other and that they were meant to be together, and when they finally did, hell broke lose. I simply can't wait to read book #3!

Plot summary: All men are idiots.
men are idiots photo: Surrounded by idiots tumblr_lmhd9cCkBm1qahofy.gif

There were many, many times during this book that I wanted to throttle Lucien.

The supposedly 'wronged' Alpha who thinks it's fine to play Russian roulette with Caia's emotions. Who is he to decide when she should accept their bond? Who is he to keep things from her and then get angry when she keeps things from him?!
men are idiots photo: excuseme.gif

And you'd think, wouldn't you, that after all he'd put her through that Caia would stay strong and not go back to him. Which makes the fact that she does accept him back a very bitter pill to swallow.

*sighs* I adored the concepts behind this book. But I just wish that its main characters had more sense!!

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!

So, this book was better for me than the first. Jaeden grows up a lot in her new life away from The Pack. As suspicious of him as I am, I actually like this new Reuben character. I find it strange that he's always following Jae around, but, there's something about him that I like regardless. Lucien and Caia's 'relationship' goes through some serious changes. While Caia is trying to figure out whether or not working for the Daylight Coven (more specifically Marita) is a good or a bad thing since Marita has been acting very strange, Lucien seems to be trying to figure out if he wants Rose or Caia. He says (in his POV's) that he wants Caia, but ACTS like he wants Rose. I can't get too mad at him since even though he and Caia are 'Mated', they aren't actually together. (cuz he lied like a bastard to her)..
Anyway, back to Caia and the Coven.. Marita is trying hard to get Caia to stay at the Center and leave The Pack, (which is why she brings in Rose) and will got to any lengths to keep her there, possibly even holding her against her will. Caia doesn't want to stay with the Center after what she discovers about Marita and what she's been doing so she has to figure out a way to leave with out being suspicious. While Caia helps Marita and the Center fight the Midnights when they attack another Daylight pack, Caia discovers even more about herself and her powers.

Finally, Caia and Lucien come to terms with their relationship and accept their Mating, all Rose issues aside. This happened a little too easily for me, but at least there was a bit of resistance on Caia's part. I like Lucien, but he's really dumb. As Alpha, he feels he can do anything he wants (which I guess technically he can) However, he doesn't really think about his actions and what they do to other's feelings, more specifically his mate that he's trying to win back. But like most guys, he's an idiot.

RYDER.... sigh.... gotta love me some Ryder. He's amazing in this book. I love how his relationship with Jaeden grows. I kind of thought they'd at least start liking each other in the first book, but it ended up going a different direction. I'm so happy for the 2 of them.

Phoebe is a serious no-nonsense bad ass, and I absolutely love her.. And I love how she respects Caia.

Anyway... like I said, this book was better than the first. I actually give it 4.5 stars.. (due to grammatical errors and a few other things not worth mentioning.) On to book 3!!

So I didn’t get into this second book like I did the first. I will say that I appreciate that this book was much cleaner (no sex scenes anyway). The story takes Caia and Lucien to the Center, where she can learn her magik and harness her power. It also follows Ryder on his quest to find and return Jaeden. I really liked Ryder, at least he was a gentlemen. But, to be honest, I thought their side story was a bit unnecessary. I didn’t like Lucien as much this time around. I don’t like how he went from being a powerful Alpha, to Caia’s follower. I also didn’t like how he treated Caia and how he was so blind to how his actions were affecting her. Duh. There is just too much going on in this series. Too many characters and the POV switches too many times. I will probably read the next book, but mostly to finish the series. I don’t know if I like Caia and Lucien enough to see him continue to act like an idiot and Caia become the all-powerful superhero.

Content: A little swearing (less than the first book), and no sex scenes but more implications.

What made me love this book more than the first, was the expansion it made beyond The Pack, but still making it the center of the story. It gave me a full picture of the Daylight Coven, and their whole supernatural world without cluttering it with too many stories or too many narrators. That being said, I don't know why, but Lucien still hasn't grown on me, I can never seem to like him, EVER! Maybe book three will finally make me like him, but I doubt it LOL

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to walk into unknown territory despite it.”

When Caia agrees to learn more about her magical abilities and test her position within the Coven/s by actually training on-sight (with Lucien in tow) at the Daylight's headquarters in Paris. Having discovered first hand that her powers are beyond what anyone imagined and continuing to struggle with her inner emotions for Lucien and their "so-called" mating, Caia must once and for all, choose her role within the brewing supernatural war and decide just where her loyalties truly lie. Also, throughout this story, Jaeden, who has run away from the Errante Pack because of deep (emotional and physical) scars caused during her capture in Book #1, is being tracked down by the local Pack hunter, Ryder. Returning to her home and family after months of purposely breaking coven law by hunting other errant supernaturals, can be both a blessing and a curse, especially when magical talents of her own and her mate are shockingly revealed. Can both ladies adjust to the new demands placed upon them before the chaos of war absorbs them all?

Book #2 really grew into two full stories since the reader continued to follow Caia's adventures into taping the potential of her magic and dealing with Lucian while Jaeden had to learn about overcoming her devastating past while opening up her heart to another. Both stories were equally captivating and held a certain charm that made it easy for the reader to dig deeper into their eerily courageous world. The book smartly balances the little sparks of romance right along the fatal causalities of war, so each chapter really comes alive--full of humorous wit, tragic turmoil, and daring discoveries.

I really loved how the characters were crafted and developed. Caia, the protagonist, is absolutely fantastic, as is her development from the sweet, naive, shy girl she was in Moon Spell to the empowered, confident, intuitive, mature (yet still sweet) young woman she’s becoming in River Cast. Her progression is dramatic, yet in light of her experiences and circumstances, organic and believable. She’s tough as she wrestles with the reality of being the lynchpin in an ages-old war between the Daylight and Midnight races. Through all the horror and injustice, she’s witnessed since coming out of hiding, she’s managed to retain the vulnerable, compassionate side that makes her so utterly likeable.
Same goes for Jaeden, our 2nd most important characters. I loved her transformation from a weak suffering to a total kickass, badass person. A person you could rely on.
Also, all other characters are distinctive with their own roles to play. I loved how each of them is given importance in the story.

The plot is fast paced, twisted and is filled with surprises which keeps you on edge. This book unravels a lot of answers for readers and presents a clear picture of the actual story. This definitely got me invested in this series. Especially with such an ending.....
Overall, with an agonizing yet enjoyable romance, a fast-paced plot, plenty of intrigues, an interesting mythology and fantastically developed characters. Accompanied by just the right amount of action and political games.

Wow -I just keep falling in love with this series and the world that has been so beautifully drawn by Sam Young!

The characters are so well described that I can see everything as it happens in my mind's eye, and it is just SO easy to care about them as they face the challenges thrown their way. I really came to love Ryder as the book progressed, and it pains me to say it but I might even prefer him to Lucien!

This book twisted in ways I wasn't expecting - but I'm not going to reprise the book here for fear of inadvertently spoiling it for anyone! Get your hands on book 1, read it quickly and then sink your teeth into book 2 ASAP!! As for me, well, I'm off to get book 3 - I NEED to know what happens before I collapse with the strain.......:)

Holy wow. Like seriously. Jeez. Cliffhanger much?! Just so you all know, what has me speaking like a tongue tied 13 year old is this amazing second book to this series. Samantha Young has once again put together a thrilling, fast pace, emotional journey for us. And when I say emotional, I mean it. I literally wanted to punch some people in the face. I could also have done with some shaking/slapping of some people also. I mean come on, some people need sense knocked into them once in awhile.

***

This book has started right where the last had left off. Caia is still with her pack, helping out the Daylight coven with her visions of what is going on with the Midnights. But Caia is becoming more and more confused in this war. What is suppose to be all black and white, good and evil, is turning out to be a blurred line. And since Lucien has very clearly labled his feelings for Caia, she feels like she has no one left to truly trust and confide in.

Once she is called to the Daylight Covens headquarters with Lucien after a vision she had of the Midnights planning an attack on another lycan pack, she is thrown into classes and seminars and even gets her own water magik teacher if you will. This is all thanks to Marita, the leader of the Daylights. Marita will stop at nothing to keep Caia at the Centre with her, aiding in the fight against the Midnights. Yet Caia has mixed feelings about Marita and knows she can not exactly trust this woman.

During a meeting, Caia gets a first hand gaze at why she can not exactly trust Marita. See, Marita introduces Rose, Lucien's old flame he had when he ran away from his pack. Caia, still having strong feelings toward Lucien [uhh duh.] immediately starts taking their past relationship to heart, and is slipping away from Lucien. Deciding he can not be trusted by her, she distances herself from him at all costs. Leaving Caia to handle the war by herself, or so she wants to believe.

After some incredible discoveries [really trying hard not to include any spoilers here people!] Caia takes it upon herself to fix everything. Some people just can not be trusted, and with a few friends and some magik, Caia learns who she can trust, who is her enemy, and who was there for her all along.

***

Okay, so after that can I say WOW again?!?!?!?! Because that is the only word that comes to mind still. I will tell you all this, I compleatly wanted to kick Lucien in the head. Maybe then he would have stopped acting like such a MAN! You know men, how they think they can read us women, and how the NEVER say how the really feel. This book had me turning page after page to not only seeing Caia and Luciens relationship crumble before my eyes, but to get to know the new amazingly sizziling romance between Jaeden and Ryder.

I really love how Samantha young gave us a break from Caia and Luciens narration. Because, darn it, I needed that break. I felt like I was going to break my darn nook for how angry I was at both of them. Having all those feelings and not telling one another?! GOSH DARN! Oh, but Jae and Ryder were totally adorable. I was SO happy for Jae after everything that had happened, and the fact that she has liked Ryder all along. And Ryder, how fast he got his feelings toward Jae. How totally taken he was with her, he had my heart melting. Because I have ALWAYS loved Ryder. He is so genuine, perfect for Jae.

[[EDITED IN: I just thought I would put this in here so I didn't have to restructure what I already wrote, but I would just like to tell you all how much I detested Rose! The one who use to have a thing with Lucien? Yeah, well she is horrid. I wanted Caia to take her pride and throw it out the window just once, so she could seriously hurt this Rose girl. Who shamelessly throws herself at Lucien. Okay, yeah there is more, but I hated her. Just thought you all should know. [: ]]

But, back to our leading lady, the all powerful Caia. She was by far my favorite of this book. How, even though going through a romantic dilemma that was tearing her apart, she managed to not let that get in the way of what she was meant to do. Of what she had to do for the greater good of everyone. She took that emotion she had, and instead of falling apart and not doing anything [like a lot of girls in books now a days], she helped it make her stronger. She channeled it toward growing up, being stronger, taking control of her powers and feelings and taking everything into her own hands.

It was so refreshing to see that in a female lead. Because I got plenty of her being a bad ass, and my favorite thing of all, a hot tempting heart breaking romance. The way she never faltered from what she felt, and how she was still that stronger person after everything turned out the way it did. She didn't let it soften her up. It added a whole new side to her in fact. Leaving her complete. Which is exactly what she will need in order to finish this epic fight Samantha Young has left us with.

This was a huge cliffhanger at the end. I was so mad. Really, completely mad. I wanted to throw my nook at the door, then I calmed down and realized I could buy the third and final book. Which I did immediately after I gave it five stars.

Samantha Young is an incredible talented writer who knows how to keep her fans braced and ready for anything she may throw us next. From heart pounding, nerve wracking, nail biting, awe inspiring, and heart melting scenes to utter disbelief, anger, yell inducing, laugh inducing emotions. She has you on a journey with plenty of twists and turns to keep any reader holding on tight with what the next page may throw at us.

But one thing is sure, I am totally ready for ride, because it is so worth it.

Happy Reading All.

I HAVE FIGURED IT OUT!

Our beloved author Samantha Young has a formula for her YA books.
This applies directly, but is not limited, to; Tales of Lunamorte, Warriors of Ankh & Fire Spirit.

1) OUR MC IS A LONELY GIRL WHO honestly believes she's either mundane or an ordinary kind of supernatural creature. Seriously, she genuinely believes there's nothing special about her.

2) THERE IS SOMETHING FREAKIN' SPECIAL ABOUT HER. Surprise, surprise. She's a HYBRID of some sort, and her mixed, powerful heritage gives her a unique ability that makes her valuable.
~ Ari (from Fire Spirit - aww, the feels!) had the power to control all Jinns.
~ Caia (Tales Of Lunamorte - how do you pronounce her name?) can water magic you to death. And blow things up with her mind. And teleport. And - you get the idea.
~ Eden (Warriors of Ankh - soul sucker!!) can restore a soul stealer back to human (I dunno, it's been a while with that book)

3) ENTER GORGEOUS BAD BOY with amazing hair and a rockin' bod, who acts as a protecter for our lovable-yet-totally-dysfunctional protagonist. He has some reservations with our girl, due to his dark past, broken spirit or strong sense of duty for her. But he thinks that, despite those hesitancies, he has a right to act like a possessive three year old when anyone displays an interest for the girl. Pfft - men and their egos/testosterone/tendencies for possessive behaviour.

4) OUR CRAZY HEROINE FINDS A NEW FAMILY THAT SHE INSTANTLY CLICKS with. Considering that she's had terrible parents who either; created her to become a weapon of mass destruction, only to ditch her with an adoptive father who doesn't love her (Ari), kill each other because of age old racism (soz Caia) or who endorsed psychopathic and homicidal tendencies, often in the form of prolonged torture of victims before their inevitable death (soz Eden), it's a real wonder any of them aren't institutionalised.
Gosh, Samantha must hate families. Kidding!

5)THERE IS A FATHER FIGURE WHO LOOKS OUT FOR HER!!

Ari has RED. Caia has MAGNUS. Eden has MARCUS. *exhales* it's cute, but also incredibly convenient for her.

6) OKAY, LET US NOW CUE THE LAZY F***** WHO DECIDES THAT THEY CAN USE HER UNIQUE ABILITIES TO THEIR ADVANTAGES AND does everything they can to recruit her, or thinks she's an ABOMINATION and tries to kill her. Either way, they have worked really hard to make sure other people do their stinkin' job, instead of dealing with the problem first hand. Okay - hiring assassins clearly NEVER WORKS. They always freakin die two seconds into the stupid fight, since they're clearly bested by the stronger fighter who - need I f****** remind you - is a powerful HYBRID!!

7) AFTER TRYING TO CONTROL HER POWERS, FORMING CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS, BATTLING JEALOUS EX'S/ STUPID GIRLS AND FALLING FOR THE OLDER GUY, she decided to play the hero and gives herself up to her enemies. Spoiler alert (though I can't see how it's much of a spoiler considering there is a prequel afterwards) she survives.

8) ENTER THE BEST FRIEND/CLOSE FRIEND/JUST FRIEND WHO Isn't needed for the book, and only exists to created a forced show of feelings from the love interest. Okay, I'll ease up on Ari & Charlie's relationship since they've been best friends for a long time and it's not that uncomfortable. But come on! It's fairly obvious that the girl wants the love interest. No competition. Like, back off dude, because in case you haven't noticed, Ari/Caia/Eden gets all starry eyed and mushy when she's in close proximity to ya, Jai/Lucien/Noah.

9) SHE WINS. Well, what else was gonna happen? It's fairly obvious that a teenaged girl with fledgling abilities and a rocky past will have the ability to take down a higher and more skilled force, destroy an ancient hierarchy of oppression and create peace talks. The bad guys - they need a serious lesson on how to out best the goodies. It's disappointing.

10) FOR SOME REASON, OUR MC HAS FAMILY MEMBERS THAT really want her dead. Ari's father killed her adoptive parent to enforce his superiority and threatened to kill Jai too. Caia's uncle Ethan tortured her friend for weeks and threatened to kill Lucien, her and anyone else she loves. Eden - her entire family threaten to kill Noah.

I'm starting to wonder if Samantha really genuinely hates happy families.

11) THE BEST FRIEND DIES. I suppose that kind of thing is to be expected, but it's still terrible that I can't grow too attached to anyone else because of the suspicion. One minute I'll love them, and the next BAM ! They're dead, I'm in tears and our MC is somewhat broken.
RIP CHARLIE, SEBASTION & STELLAN. YOU WILL BE MISSED (*Even though you were all amazingly hot and dysfunction*) (*and technically, Charlie does die. Or that broken version of him, anyways. You know, the one who plays ping pong with his crush's heart and then turns himself into a sorcerer to avenge his brothers death*)

12) BUT IT'S OKAY - BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS ALL SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS WHEN, finally, the long awaited for couple become an item. Father figure is present, family is still mostly intact and evil has been destroyed. And now they're kind of badass hunters that fight day-to-day evil or reform a pitiful regime.

- AND YET, DESPITE KNOWING EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN, I STILL READ THE SERIES OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

If I've missed anything out, please feel free to add it in the comments.

I love SAMANTHA YOUNG'S BOOKS! I think she's an incredible writer, and if a new book comes out with the same formula, I'll still read it. Happily.

A really good second

Another amazing biok in this series. I cant wait for the next book, the hideous betrayal carried out by those she trusts and who should have been trustworthy was very shocking and to leave it on that cliffhanger was unfair. Waiting anxiously for the next.

3.25 stars. Book 2 takes the action and adventure up a notch. Where Moon Spell felt more like a paranormal romance, this second installment in the Lunarmorte series brought a little bit of an edgier urban fantasy vibe to the table.

I found the story of the war and oncoming power shift to be a nice addition to the mix. Our female lead Caia struggled with her own beliefs and had to make hard decisions about who she was going to be, even if it meant standing up to the people who had been crucial in shaping who she had become. It was good to see her take action and lean on her own instincts above all else.

Were there still tales of love to be read? I'd have to answer with a resounding yes. I rather enjoyed the two separate romances in this book. One couple was powerful, stubborn, and explosive. The other pair was patient, kind, and sensitive to one another. I appreciated the contrast in relationships, since not all relationships come about in the same manner.

Lucien and Caia encountered a few stumbling blocks on their road to happiness. Misunderstandings and hurt feelings held them back from giving in to what their hearts wanted. In a way, this was a good thing, since their love was the "hit you over the head" type in book 1. Because the intensity was dialed down a bit in this chapter, we were able to see more of who Caia was as a person, and not just who she was with Lucien.

The second couple - I won't say who it is, but I will say that I liked them much better than Lucien and Caia. Their relationship seemed more realistic to me. Even though I didn't write much of a review for Moon Spell, I did have a few complaints with Lucien and Caia in book 1, mainly having to do with Lucien being a bit overbearing (which I gave a bit of pass to because he is an alpha - literally). Thankfully, he seemed to have gotten a bit of a grip on himself as the story progressed.

My only real complaint (and this is probably nitpicking), but I wasn't vibing on the notion that all paranormal races (everything from fairies to vamps to shifters) came from the gods - as in the mythological Greek gods. It's like throwing too many ingredients into the soup pot. I'd rather see one (or two) races with their own identity, than see everything under the sun being attributed to something else completely, and all of it somehow being related. I'm not a details nerd, but I want a backstory that somehow makes a bit of sense. As well, I've never been a fan of stories which use their mythological foundation as the basis for their swear words. I don't really want to see "goddess, Gaia," etc. thrown around in everyday conversation. I'd rather see nothing at all instead of subbed in words. Especially when the guys are doing it too...talk about odd...

I can't say this is the best shifter or paranormal series I've read but I can say that the books so far have been pretty impressive for an indie effort and aren't a bad deal for as cheap as they are. There are some minimal typos (I have the original version though, so this might have been fixed with the newer release) and a few small cliches which could have been avoided, but overall, I enjoyed the read. To me, this series is better than the much-hyped Nightshade trilogy. I hear the third book is the best of them all, so I'm looking forward to it.

4.5 stars -- Totally finished this book with my heart racing and my finger itching to one-click the next book in the series. I am soooooo thankful that this series is finished and so I don't even have to wait, b/c I became totally wrapped up in the world and all the crazy happenings going on.

I thought Caia grew up quite a bit in this book. And she was faced with so much adversity, from the meddling in her love life (which was kind of sad for me, b/c I missed having a bit more romance between Caia and Lucien) to her discoveries about both Covens. I thought she handled things pretty well given she sort of had the responsibilities thrust upon her. And while it was frustrating to see some of the misunderstandings happening between Caia and Lucien, I could see how it came about and mostly didn't want to smack them too hard (though I would have smacked more Lucien than Caia anyways). I really came to love Caia as the book went on, and felt for her having to make so many hard decisions and not feeling like she had anyone she could trust and turn to.

I also enjoyed getting to know Ryder and Jaeden through their POVs as well. I really loved their little side plot, it made me extremely happy....it provided that something that I was missing from the story otherwise (and yes, I'm vaguebooking b/c I don't want to spoil it necessarily, even if I totally saw it coming).

The bad guys have me all flustered. I honestly can't stand the girl bad guy (again, being vague), and was so glad to see that my dislike of that character was for good reason. And can I just say that I totally called who Kyrios was?? But not knowing what their plans are is just making me crazy!!!

So yeah, probably not a great review, but I was trying not to give anything away. But I definitely enjoyed this book even more than the first one and am excited to see how it concludes!! It's been awhile since I got into a paranormal series (I've been reading a LOT of contemporary lately), so it's been a really fun change of pace!

Ohhh boy! Here goes.

I love the 1st book more than this. But it's still soooo good :)

Here are my comments:

Alone/ Lost
Jaeden suffered a lot in the first book. As in really suffered. I was very sad for her then and i am still sad at the beginning if this book. She scared because she don't know how to deal with her love ones and it made her leave them behind. I admire her though in this one because she was still able to face some those fears. With a little help from her mate :)

Caia, i really felt her in this one. You know not being able yo confide with the person she loves because she thinks he's in love with another. Arrrgh! She really really needed him! Plus Sebastian wasn't there anymore for her!!! :( boy, she can really control herself. Even though it's breaking her heart. :( want me to show you how she's hurting?

“I haven’t lost what you have. I’m sorry you can’t be with the person you want.”

and

Not being able to confide in anyone had brought on a fresh wave of grief over losing Sebastian. If she’d been given the chance to tell Seb she thought Midnights might not be so bad after all... he’d have believed her. No questions asked.

Love
Everyone is in love! Caia, Lucien, Jaeden, Ryder, Laila, Vilhelm! :) love is in the air! Oh! Very possessive lycans in the leash! Ha!

Deception/ War
Really vampyre? I haven't really figure out yet if you're evil or not. Guess i'll find in the last book.
Marita, you know what, i really hate you!

“We were just discussing that. After all, you two aren’t going to commit to your mating, and Lucien and I would have been mates if he hadn’t been obligated to fulfil his father’s betrothal to you.”
----- whatta bitch!!!! I hate this girl!!

One more quote, this one i love:
She would tell you that in the end we only have ourselves, no matter how many friends, allies, or loved ones are in our lives. You have to trust yourself before you can trust anyone else.

Darker twists and turns, and a continued sizzling chemistry between Caia and Lucien, make River Cast a fantastic sequel to Moon Spell.

River Cast continues were Moon Spell left off and now Caia is torn between her pack and embracing a different life with her magical powers. What I missed the most from Moon Spell was not having a lot of scenes with the pack, but Samantha delivers a new kind of action in the form of her magik world.

The twists and turns start when Caia goes to the Centre to learn how to handle her magik powers, she soon learns nothing is what it seems, even in her relationships with her friends, her pack and especially Lucien. FINALLY there was a scene with the Caia and Lucien that I've been waiting for since the beginning of the series. That's all I'll say about that (leaving it spoiler free).

Along with Caia and Lucien's relationship is the fun, humorous duo of Jaeden and Ryder. I absolutely loved how Samantha wove their story into River Crest and I really enjoyed getting to know them more. I think Samantha did a great job at engaging all the characters into the story and keeping the two unique relationships going. I liked that Jaeden and Ryder bring a different element to the story.

River Cast is a fantastic, spell binding story that's part dark and twisty and another part action packed with some sizzling romances. Not to out do herself with Moon Spell's cliff hanger, River Cast leaves me wanting the third installment in this fast paced, engaging series. Seriously, I love the mix of werewolves, witches and more! I definitely recommend picking up this series!

Samantha Young is quite an exciting writer. River Cast was so action packed I had trouble putting it down to do anything else. I actually read the entire book in three days. For readers looking for a series similar to the Harry Potter series or the Mortal Instruments series (which I was), you should definitely check out this series. The storyline is powerful and there are so many unforeseen twists I was, at many times, left with my mouth hanging out and my heart beating 100 miles an per. That is the mark of a great book! I can't wait for Blood Solstice the third book in the Lunarmorte series!

In the beginnng I was a little scared that the second book would focus more on Jaeden than on Caia and Lucien (btw, I forgot to mention that I would like to have a mixture between Wolfe and Lucien for my fantasy, thank you)! But the story was just as amazing and while it did have the POV's from other characters, she still stuck with Lucien and Caia (making my heart break again on multiple occasions). I LOVED this book like I did the first one!! Onto the third now!

REREAD: Ohhhhhhhhhh, I just love that scene where Caia and Lucien FINALLY got together! Took them long enough! Still had me finishing that book rather quickly and I...well, I still think this series is amazing!!

4.5/5 stars

Of all Samantha Young’s series that I’ve read so far, I have to say that The Tale of Lunarmorte is probably my favorite… which I find somewhat ironically hilarious since, in general, I just don’t really get the whole werewolf thing. The mythology behind this series, though, is original and absolutely fascinating — the magic, the rules, the society, the politics, the prejudices. It’s just all very well fleshed out and presented. Little hint… it involves Greek gods and the origins of all supernatural races.

Caia, the book’s main protagonist, is fantastic, as is her development from the sweet, naive, shy girl she was in Moon Spell to the empowered, confident, intuitive, mature (yet still sweet) young woman she’s becoming in River Cast. Her progression is dramatic, yet in light of her experiences and circumstances, organic and believable. She’s tough, and getting tougher as she wrestles with the reality of being the lynchpin in an ages old war between the Daylight and Midnight races. Yet through all the horror and injustice she’s witnessed since coming out of hiding, she’s managed to retain the vulnerable, compassionate side that makes her so utterly likable.

One thing I’ve come to love about Samantha’s books is that all her heroines and heroes are distinctive. They are all unique and the players and dynamics don’t seem like carbon copies from series to series. Every story, every character and every relationship has it’s own individuality and evolution. It may seem like a obvious, “Well, duh!” kind of thing to point out, but in my opinion, it’s a tougher skill to master than you might think. Solid, unique character building and relationship development is probably the biggest selling point a book has, and losing myself in a Samantha Young novel has quickly become my current, favorite obsession because of her ability to create captivating casts of characters.

Also featured in River Cast, is Jaeden. Another wolf from Pack Errante and Caia’s first friend upon rejoining the pack, Jaeden snuck her way into my heart in Moon Spell, so I love the addition of her perspective in this novel. Jaeden’s storyline is used brilliantly, for not only does it advance the larger plot, but Samantha uses Jaeden’s point-of-view to fill some voids that are left in the wake of Caia’s circumstances and storyline.

The romance in River Cast, and indeed in Moon Spell as well, drove me crazy… in a good way. I do enjoy a good angst-ridden romance every now and again. And, wow, it can be a bit angsty. Moon Spell and River Cast both had me gripping my Kindle, white-knuckled, wanting knock our two main characters’ heads together in the hopes that either these crazy kids would work it out, or that, getting their heads in such close proximity, they’d accidentally kiss. Either one would have been good with me. But they’re stubborn, prideful and each have their individual reasons for their ridiculously tormenting, angsty ways. So yes, it’s slightly torturous, but as I said, it’s the enjoyable kind.

And do they kiss and live happily ever after with sunsets, picnics, rainbows and unicorns?

Well, maybe not the unicorns, but read the book and find out for yourself.

The overall storyline of River Cast – Caia’s introduction to the Daylight’s Center, the evolution of her incredible abilities, her doubts about the ideology behind the war between the Daylights and the Midnights, maneuvering around those she doesn’t entirely trust– has been amped up. I wouldn’t say that Moon Spell was slowly paced, not at all, but where that book had to lay the groundwork for the world and characters, River Cast was free to take off at break neck speed and it rarely gives you a chance to catch your breath. In River Cast, Caia is, essentially, thrown into the dangerous open water of the magiks’ world – an ocean, she’s realizing, with a treacherous and deadly political undertow that could suck her, and all those she cares about, under. The stakes are clearly higher and Caia’s beginning to understand what her place in the larger picture is. She’s facing off against age, experience, prejudice, fear, false allies, and betrayal. It’s not a world she was bred to, and she’s still learning to play the game, but it’s one she must master if she hopes to put an end to the war.

Overall, with an agonizingly wonderful romance, a fast-paced plot, plenty of intrigue, an interesting mythology and fantastically developed characters, Samantha Young has convinced me that perhaps, for the first time, I do get this werewolf thing after all.

River Cast
(The Tale of Lunarmorte, Book #2)
by Samantha Young

Genre: Paranormal Romance | Young-Adult

Swept into the world of the Daylight Coven, Caia is caught between her loyalty to the Daylights and her new insight into the hearts of the Midnights. As more obstacles are thrown in her and Lucien's way, Caia finds herself becoming further adrift from him and Pack Errante. With no one to turn to, Caia has to make the most difficult choice of all... Which Coven does she truly belong with?

Not all is as it seems in this second addition of The Tale of Lunarmorte series when Caia agrees to learn more about her magical abilities and test her position within the Coven/s by actually training on-sight (with Lucien in tow!) at the Daylight's headquarters in Paris. Having discovered first hand that her powers are beyond what anyone imagined and continuing to struggle with her inner emotions toward Lucien and their "so-called" mating, Caia must once and for all, choose her role within the brewing supernatural war and decide just where her loyalties truly lie. Also, throughout this story, Jaeden, who has ran away from the Errante Pack because of deep (emotional and physical) wounds caused during her capture in Book #1, is being tracked down by the local Pack hunter, Ryder.

Book #2 really grew into two full stories, since the reader continued to follow Caia's adventures into taping the potential of her magic and dealing with Lucian while Jaeden had to learn about overcoming her devastating past while opening up her heart to another. Both stories were equally captivating and held a certain charm that made it easy for the reader to dig deeper into their eerily courageous world. Overall, the book smartly balances the little sparks of romance right along the fatal causalities of war, so each chapter really comes alive--full of humorous wit, tragic turmoil, and daring discoveries--Enjoy!

Likes: Lucian is as determined as ever to keep Caia safe (and by his side!), so much so, that his sacrifices, for her, make him an even more delicious character to drool over and cheer on. Also, Ryder was a great comical/up-beat balance to Jaeden's down-trodden personality that together, they created some delightful chemistry.

Dislikes: Again, not much of a Coven fan. The Daylight/Midnight Coven parts in River Cast really dragged for me and their dullness took away much of the excitement within the story... almost so much that I was tempted to begin skipping sections/chapters -- not good!

The first one was a lot of background information but once you got all that down it got a whole lot more interesting. Except for the whole, “We refuse to be mates just because” thing. That actually really fucking annoyed me, I don’t understand it. I would have nipped that shit in the bud but thats just me. I personally would have never got with Lucien in the first place because I’m not a pushover like Caia is.

This book had a lot more stuff going on. There was a lot more political intrigue and espianoge and I really enjoyed that in the book. One of the things that kind of was like a burr under my skin was the fact that Caia was playing a political game when I felt that she should have been playing a straight forward game. She was trying too hard in my opinion. And allowing for way more respect to Marita than I ever would have given her. I feel like that is what got her in trouble. She doesn’t have to answer to Marita, she is the head of the Midnight Coven. They are equals. Marita was very overbearing about it and treating her as if she was her subject, when in fact Caia should have made it very clear from the beginning, “Bitch, lets not get this twisted” I think thats where her downfall was with regards to the political aspect.

I don’t even understand the whole Lucien/Cair relationship thing. The only way their relationship made any kind of sense was because he was a shifter alpha. And they are known to be very agressive, possessive and domineering. But she is an alpha too, so it didn’t make sense. With her being as independent and strong magically and politically, I don’t know why he felt the need to hover. She could very clearly take care of herself and yet he still acted like she was this fragile thing.

But I will say this, one of my favorite things about this book was Jaeden and Ryder’s story. Oh lordy, it was good. Their story was just like the frosting on the cake.Jaedans character was really well written. Ryders levity helped to even out her rough edges which I quite enjoyed.

And the way they kind of threw Rueben in there. At first it was hard to figure his role out, even by the end of the book I was still scratching my head. But it came together very nicely, there was no loose ends, everything was tied up.

This book was great.

Sensatoinal. Captivating. Absolutely Awe-freaking-Some!
5
(crazy good) stars!!

I was stunned into addiction with the first few chapters...River Cast was glued to my hand, and I felt as if I might have slight heart palipations by the end.
I will admit I was a bit upset with Lucien and Caia in the first book (okay, I was fuming mad at them!)
Thankfully they redeemed themselves..even if it took most of the book for them to do so.
Jae ran from the pack, afraid and embarassed by her horrific secrets..ashamed of the 'changes' her kidnapping has left her with. Rueben, a rouge vampire takes her under his wing, and trys to help give her space and time to heal (which she so desperately needs).
Caia is called to the Center and of course, Lucien trails along. She explores her magic and he takes the back seat- which is not easy for the Alpha.
Ryder and Jae...*sigh*...heart melting.
Their relationship takes new twists and turns and it makes the story soo much sweeter!
His ability to drag her back from the brink of the black hole she was teetering on was incredible. He was the perfect mate for her in so many ways.
His Koala bear/lizzard joke was soo hilarious, I couldn't have held in my barking laughter if I tried.
Rose (grrrrr)..I wanted to reach into my kindle and throttle her. I was livid with her at first, but then I realized she was a necessary evil. Who knows if Caia would have ever acknowleged her feelings (even if it was not clear to Lucien himself, everyone else witnessed her revelation) for her coveted Alpha... and thank goodness Marion stepped up and took the necessary action of opening Luciens eyes. What a idiot he was!!
The ending was catastrophic!
All around it is an utterly fantastic read.
Sam is truly a phenomenal writer and I am eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this amazing series.

**sorry massive spoilers!** I couldn't help myself. ;)

You know I always worry about the second book when the first is mind-blowing because I'm never really certain if the second going to be as awesome as the first but it seems that this series just gets better and better with time!

I always try to pick out my favorite quotes but I kept finding myself saying, "o goodness this quote is amazing" and then flipping to the NEXT page and saying the same thing...and so on and so on. So basically I couldn't pinpoint my favorite...however what I can say is that I was being completely obliterated (for lack of a better word) but the power of love in this book. I couldn't get over how Ryder saved Jae and how Lucien saves Caia and how Vil saves Laila, goodness I was bubbling over with giddiness over these scenes. Some of my favorites scenes were when Jae and Ryder were in the motel room (when they first declared love for each other!) and when Lucien went to tell Caia he loved her for the first time. God I must have read these scenes 10x times before I actually moved on with this book.

Usually I fly though books I LOVE, however with this book (since I was already basically in love with it before I started it because of the first book) I found myself going more slowly so that I could savor every moment. I was constantly flipping back and rereading (not because I didn't understand it) but because I LOVED what was being said and how it was said so much, I wanted to read it over and over and over again.

I can't wait for the next book, Samantha Young still has me completely captivated. 5 complete stars <3

This book had me feeling a lot like this:

description

At times, I wanted to personally punch Lucien in the face for how thick-headed he could be. Caia finds Rose in his room, and he does not even think to go talk to Caia about this obviously misinterpreted scene afterwards? SO FRUSTRATING! Lucien acts like this throughout the book, creating situations that leave Caia thinking he has moved on from her and never loved her. I wish they could both act a little bit more mature and just talk to each other!

Besides Lucien frustrating the crap out of me, the pace of the novel was kind of slow for me. The majority of the book is spent at the Center. Lucein and Caia do a little bit of training, socialize with others a bit, but I was disappointed in the lack of action from being at the center. I figured Caia would meet some very interesting people with enticing backgrounds that would later become more dominant characters in the series, but I didn't get much of that.
I will say, I was VERY pleasantly surprised by the second love story of this book: Ryder and Jaeden. Their love was such a refreshing difference from Caia and Lucien's. Ryder, however powerful he may be, is always respectful towards Jaeden, and he slowly gets her to open up to him. While Lucien is always trying to show off how dominant he is. I do wish we got to see a bit more of the wedding tho! That would have been a beautiful ending.

Excited to see what happens in the next one!

River Cast, the second instalment, in the Tale of Lunarmorte Trilogy is smooth, fast-paced, funny, sexy and drop dead supernatural. I loved how Young brought two of the other characters, Jaeden and Ryder, into the forefront. The sparks between them are great, they're so snarky and funny with each other and bring some light relief to the darker side of the story, as told through Caia and Lucien's eyes. We don't have as much of the pack in this one and I thought I'd really miss them but Young creates a dark and magical world at the Daylight Coven's Centre and Caia's action-packed and political battles there are so engrossing I forgot about the pack for a while.
Caia and Lucien's relationship is full of ups and downs like the first novel and the chemistry between them is still sizzling. The only complaint is that the author leaves us with another cliffhanger, and now I'm biting my nails waiting on the final instalment.
Brilliant stuff.

After finishing Moon Spell I couldn't wait to get River Cast and see what happens next. River Cast was as amazing as Moon Spell. This is definitely a book that sends you through all kinds of emotions... you laugh, cry, and be angry. Following along with Caia and her new family and friends... and enemies will keep you on your toes! She finally has the threat of her uncle out of the way but that is followed by other obstacles and situations. Just like Moon Spell, River Cast keeps you hooked from beginning to end and leaves you anticipating the final book of the trilogy!

This book i find hard to express how much i loved it...To name but a few; Thrilling, emotional, infrutiating, exciting, funny, and the list could go on and on! It has everything you look for in a book and so much more! And i have to admit i did clap with excitement and relief when Lucien tucked his male alpha pride to one side and finally said the three magic words to Caia :) Can't wait to read the third!

This is probably my favorite book in the series. The expansion of the character's view points was perfect. It gives you a total view on what's happening in the different characters' lives and surroundings, while still making you try to figure out who is actually helping our main characters and who is going to stab them in the back.
