EDIT: I've found some awesome scans of this manga on my tablet's manga reader, translated straight from Japanese, and have edited my review accordingly. My original review was based on an altered English reprinted copy.
Actual Rating: 4.5 stars.
I will explain why I docked half a star, but not yet.
There were quite a few differences from the anime in this volume. For one, in the anime, the skull hiding the comb containing Sakasa-gami no Yura's soul was red, like the comb itself. In the manga, the skull was just an ordinary skull. Sesshoumaru's encounter with the soldiers is different from his encounter with them in the anime as well. Even InuYasha's encounter with the Mu-onna, where InuYasha sees right away that her reflection has no face.
I know I said this last time, but I really wish we could have seen more of Sakasa-gami no Yura. You know, later in the series? She's just too sexy to die so soon. She's even too sexy to be an ogre. When I think of an ogre, I picture a large, gnarly, ugly looking creature with beady little eyes, greyish skin, bad breath and severe body odor. I definitely don't picture Sakasa-gami no Yura.
For a while, it feels like she's absolutely invincible. Injuries are merely microscopic inconveniences. Nothing that InuYasha does phases her. Takahashi makes you think Yura will defeat them. However, Kagome saves the day in one of the most unlikely ways. I like Kagome as a heroine. She's a girl everyone would want to have as a best friend. She's caring, helpful, and encouraging but also tells you what you need to hear. InuYasha may find her annoying, but he needs her like I need a vacation. I'm sick of all this snow.
Did I ever mention how much I love a good sibling rivalry? I love a good sibling rivalry. Especially that of InuYasha and Sesshoumaru. It's like crack. I can't get enough of these brothers. Their battle in this volume is possibly my favourite of any battle in this series. Not only are we introduced to new characters and see how they act, but we also see InuYasha's and Sesshoumaru's relationship to one another. We also get a sense of why InuYasha craves the jewel's power to make him a full demon.
Though I'm not a "Sesshoumaru girl" (not really, anyway), I always really loved Sesshoumaru's character design. I'd like to believe that Sesshoumaru more closely resembles their dead father than InuYasha does. His facial features are a bit softer in the manga than the anime, which, if you ask me, just leads to a false sense of security and the belief that he's an okay guy.
Unless you know better, of course.
We also get to meet Myoga the Flea, one of my favourite secondary characters. He's the size of a spec of dust, but he always makes me smile and chuckle. Jaken makes me chuckle too, for an ugly little shit of a villain sidekick.
Why are the villains always so attractive, and their side kicks are butt-ugly? Why is this a thing? I feel bad for Jaken sometimes. He's always getting pushed around, stepped on, and usually ends up having to "clean up the mess."
I guess that's what happens when you're an ugly toad.
Again, the artwork and storytelling was excellent. Especially those coloured pages. Unf, I can't get enough. I want more coloured pages, damn it! However, I did have a problem with one little thing. Now, when I say little, I say it both literally and sarcastically. Literally, because this is the first time I've noticed it, and I've read this volume more times than I can remember. And sarcastically, because it's really not that much of a small thing.
This is the reason why I took away half a star.
After Kagome breaks the Mu-onna's spell and saves InuYasha, Sesshoumaru reveals that he has figured out where their father's tomb is, which is InuYasha's right eye. However, Takahashi drew Sesshoumaru pulling the pearl from InuYasha's left eye. I'm not kidding. If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself. Find your copy and go straight to act seven. Or find scans online and go to chapter 15 (according to the scans I'm reading, anyway). Take a good look. Grab a friend or your younger sibling and act out the scene the way you see it in the manga. Just don't poke anybody's eyes out.
I don't know if Takahashi did it on purpose or accidentally, but I know I'll never forget it now that I've seen it.
