Beth thought she’d escaped her past. But all this time, it’s been waiting for her…

Beth and Ian are desperate to have a child. So much so that they decide to sell his family cabin in upstate New York to pay for IVF.

When they arrive at the cabin, they meet Ryan, the caretaker. But Ryan is not who he says he is… He’s here because he knows Beth has a dark secret. And now he intends to use it against her.

He threatens to tell Ian everything about Beth's past unless she does exactly what he says.

Beth finds herself caught in a nightmarish trap. If Ian discovers what she’s been hiding from him, she’s sure he’ll leave her. She’ll lose everything she cares about, including the chance to have a child of her own.

On the other hand, what Ryan wants her to do is so dark and twisted it’s beyond horrifying.

Either way, Beth is sure her life is over, she can see no way out. Unless… Unless she digs deep and finds a part of herself that is willing to do something so awful it doesn’t even bear thinking about…

A short, dark(ish) thriller with a few surprises along the way.

Two separate storylines you know are somehow connected… you just need to find the common denominator to put the puzzle together.

Lizzie thinks she’s met the man of her dreams. The new doctor in town, who proceeds to sweep her off her feet. Up to and including providing her with a home of her dreams. Every thing seems quite rosy until her dream home turns into a prison she cannot escape from.

Beth and Ian head off to Ian’s remote family cabin to prep it for sale. There they find Ryan the caretaker who’s been hired to look after the place. Only Ryan has been waiting for the couple with an agenda of his own.

The author did a great job keeping me guessing. Though the breadcrumbs were there for me to follow, I just overlooked most of them!🤦🏻‍♀️. This was my first read by this author and I am definitely interested in reading more of her works!

I listened to the audio and enjoyed the narration.

⚠️Be aware. There is a lot of (domestic) violence in this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media.

TW: Sadism, Physical Abuse, Manipulation, Torture

Lizzie is living in a small town in Alabama when she meets a handsome doctor who is unattached and interested in her. Unable to believe her luck, she quickly falls in love with him. They begin their life together, having a picture-perfect marriage to those on the outside. Beth is living in North Carolina and is happily married to Ian. Trying to get enough money for IVF, they travel to his family’s cabin in upstate New York to get it ready to sell. While there, they meet Ryan, the cabin’s caretaker. But not all is as it seems from first impressions.

This book is set up from two timelines/POVs, which I enjoyed. But things felt really over the top. The abuse went from zero to 100 in an instant, which made it difficult to accept it as realistic. I know there are sadistic people out there, but in a book, you want some motivation/reason included other than one or two vague references to a troubled past. Some of the characters’ actions didn’t make much sense, either. Even though it’s told from the first-person POV and privy to the characters’ inner thoughts, there were several instances when contradictory things happened without any explanation.

There really wasn’t much plot with this one, and the characters weren’t compelling enough to make this a good character-driven work, so it left me wanting more overall. There was no emotional connection to the characters because they weren’t well developed. I didn’t think there was any real palpable tension or suspense. This was partly due to how I felt about the characters, but also because so many absurd/farfetched things kept happening that the read was more absurd than suspenseful.

While I liked the creative way the author told this shorter story, I think it needed to be longer to allow for better developed characters and more plot or depth. This one does have many high ratings, so if the premise is interesting to you, go check out what other folks thought. It just didn’t work for me. My thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to read this work, which will be published June 20, 2023. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

You Can’t Hide gripped me immediately. Although at times it was a difficult listen because of the intense physical and emotional abuse, it still kept me interested in the outcome. One of the twists I guessed, but the others were a complete surprise. The narrator did an excellent job bringing the characters to life while adding an element of authenticity and emotion to this heartbreaking, and unsettling thriller. Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for my audiobook.

Okay pretty predictable, but a very straightforward read..

What happens when an unexpected or maybe he's expected cos wife don't know what's going on; shows ups at an isolated cabin claiming to be it's caretaker only to have sinister plans for the wife.

How far can you run from your past.....?

Solid 3 stars.!!!!

Emily Shiner is one of those authors who can have me yelling at my Kindle within a few chapters!

“Well done, wife. You’re becoming more perfect every moment you’re married to me.”

Here’s what I loved:
✔️every page hums with tension
✔️author has mastered careening, so I kept turning pages
✔️atmospheric and threatening, with ominous signs facing the protagonist at every turn
✔️a gullible girl down on her luck
✔️a GQ guy with ulterior motives
✔️desperate couple
✔️an eerie and isolated cabin
✔️author taps into her characters’ heartbeats, making tension palpable
✔️fast-paced
✔️full of conflict and suspense
✔️unexpected twists
✔️kept me on the edge of my seat
✔️secrets - when someone is holding one over another person
✔️a character who finds inner strength

I’m not giving anything away - just know that I felt like I was watching one of those movies where the music tells you that it’s time to cover your eyes because something you won’t want to see is about to happen. I read the cues, I continued on anyways. My heart is still beating this morning!

Fantastic. Fantastic. Fantastic.

Emily Shiner does not disappoint.

I was gifted this copy by Inkubator Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

4.5 stars. I loved this story. With thrillers, I’m always trying to figure out the twist endings, but this one got me. In a very good way though. I’m going to keep this review extremely broad, as to not spoil any of the surprises, but Beth and Lizzy were fantastic lead characters. Both strong-willed, resilient women looking to get themselves out of dangerous and abusive situations. The author masterfully wrote them in a way that made me, as the reader, feel every single emotion they experienced throughout, so I was completely invested in both of them. Now Zachary made my skin crawl. I hated him so badly for how he treated Lizzy. And I wanted to introduce my fist to his head like a thousand times. Ryan was also a good lesser, alternate antagonist, with his link to the main plot being divulged and explored very well. Lots of surprises, but not overdone, and well-written, Emily Shiner has won over a new fan in Peter Topside.

A quick and captivating read!

Lizzie had quickly fallen for the new doctor in town. Not soon after, they were married and living the dream. At least that's what it appears like from the outside. Behind closed doors, Lizzie's new husband is holding her captive and abusing her in the most sadistic way possible. She wants to get away but how?! He knows her deepest and darkest secret.

This was an entertaining read from beginning to end. I have to admit, Lizzie's character was extremely frustrating to read about. But I'm glad she wasn't completely helpless the entire time. There's definitely room for more development and depth. The story felt a bit rushed in the beginning. Other than that, it was still an enjoyable read.

I would recommend this to those fans of domestic thrillers.

***Thank you to NetGalley, Emily Shiner, and Dreamscape Media for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

The "Queen of revenge plots," Author Emily Shiner, returns following her sizzling (Dec, 2022) I'm Following You (5 Stars) and (Jan 2023) The Forgotten Boy (5 Stars) with YOU CAN'T HIDE —another addictive domestic psychological suspense of revenge/obsession mixed with dark, twisted humor.

Shiner is on FIRE! Her BEST yet.

It is difficult to write a short review because I have so much to discuss, and I love her books! I want everyone to read them.

Two storylines converge for a heart-pounding explosive showdown. You can RUN, but you cannot HIDE. The past and dark secrets rise to the surface.

A cautionary tale: Note: WATCH OUT FOR THE CAMERAS! Also, REVENGE has no expiration date.

LIZZY: As the book opens in rural Turkey Pen, Alabama, we meet Lizzy, a young woman down on her luck after being stranded on the roadside. A trap of a car, and she has no money to call a tow truck or AAA.

She needs to get to Pop's Diner for her shift and hopes someone will stop and help. After several cars pass, she starts walking. A good-looking guy in a suit stops. Wow, how did she get so lucky? At least he is not a killer. ...What she does not know yet.

His name is Zachary. He says he borrowed the truck since he is getting new tires on his Lexus. He is the new doctor in town— A doctor? And he looks like he could be on the cover of G.Q. For real?

He takes her to the Diner and then asks for her keys. He will see if he can repair her car and drop it off for her before her shift ends. Who is this guy? He indeed does what he says.

It turns out he is a REAL doctor. Dr. Zachary Pierce, Board-certified family practice, went to Duke University and completed a residency in Chicago. What is he doing here in this small town? Usually, men have an ulterior motive, but what is his?

Unfortunately, she will find out, but only when it is too late. Also, Lizzy has a dark past. One that she wants to stay buried.

BLACKMAIL. This guy is PURE EVIL! A monster. A master manipulator. He knows about her past. If she does not do what he says. He will tell the world. He knows what she did. He wants someone to fix. She is the victim.

He wants the perfect wife. The perfect marriage. The Perfect life. Perfect wins. Lizzy wants the perfect murder!

She soon learns (after the marriage) her husband is a control freak and a psychopath. A devil in disguise. He is abusive. Tortures. He keeps her prisoner in her own home with cameras everywhere so she cannot leave the house. He makes sure she has no friends. He planned this very carefully. He knows her every move. Then when she disobeys, she is moved to the basement as a prisoner. He wants to make her body perfect. A sicko.

How will she ever escape? She has killed before to save herself and she will do it again, given the chance.

BETH: In alternating chapters, we meet Beth.

Beth, a florist, and her husband, Ian Myers (very sweet guy), a high school teacher/photographer. She is very private due to her past, but her husband does not know about her past and he puts it all out there on social media.

They live in the N.C. mountains, but they are headed to upstate New York near Canada in the middle of a snowstorm. Of course, N.Y. snowstorms are nothing like N.C.

The reason for the urgency is that Ian inherited his family's mountain cabin and wants to clean the place to prepare for putting it on the market. They need to sell the cabin to help finance the costly IVF treatments. They want children, and it has not been easy.

He says she does not have to go, but she goes along. Once there, she sees the cabin is nestled way back in the woods, in the middle of nowhere. They must walk through the woods to get to it from the main road. This is difficult since it is night and the snow is so deep. They can barely see in front of them.

Once they finally arrive, a dead deer is next to the cabin. Then inside, it appears someone has been living here. There is a cat, food in the refrigerator, a book (The Art of Never Letting Go), a hunter, and someone who has built a fire recently. Weird!

She is concerned, but Ian thinks the property manager/caretaker may be looking after it. They have no cell phone coverage or internet.

This makes no sense to Beth. What if who had been staying here comes back? Who is this person he is referring to named Ryan, the caretaker?

Then things become very weird and freaky at the cabin, and Beth thinks something sinister is happening. They must get out of here. They will clean and then leave. But with power problems and other things, they are delayed. They took a week off from work and Ian is not in a hurry to leave.

She is not wrong for worrying. They are trapped. She feels like she is in the middle of a horror movie. She feels like someone is watching them. Is there a squatter? There is also a shed outside the cabin. They must leave the cabin. Start their family and leave New York, and never look back.

However, the mysterious intruder returns, and he has a PLAN. Beth is about to come face to face with her past. One she thought was long buried. What happens next will blow your mind. What he is demanding. It is sick and horrifying.

Now she and her husband are both in danger. How will they escape? Who will live, and who will die?

At first, you are unsure where Emily is taking you with Lizzy (as this part is not in the book description summary). Be patient, and enjoy the journey.

All will come together at the cabin. Oh, and then wait. Just when you think all is tied up with a bow at the end. Watch out. There is another signature Shiner jaw-dropping wicked twist to leave you smiling.

I was dying, before this twist, saying GET THE CAMERA!! PLEASE.

OMG! Between the evil Zachary doctor, the basement, and the creepy Ryan property manager at the cabin in this claustrophobic snow setting in the woods, this book is spine-chilling! The vivid settings and the characters jump off the page.

Around 50% into the book, readers will learn about Lizzy's past. You will sympathize with her until the end. She reminds me of Freida McFadden's, Millie (The Housemaid & The Housemaid's Secret. She cannot catch a break and her past keeps surfacing and being used against her.

This book was so good and I read it in one sitting. The way the two stories came together was quite clever, and that ENDING!

YOU CAN'T HIDE pulses with suspenseful twists propelling the reader to the explosive end. Cameras are a big part of both storylines. I loved it! It would make a great movie!

AUDIOBOOK: I read the e-book and listened to the audiobook narrated by Emily Durante for a spine-chilling performance.

All her books are original. I AM IN FOR AN ENTERTAINING RIDE when I start reading an Emily Shiner book. I always clear my calendar before starting one of her books because they are addictive and unputdownable.

I discovered Emily not long ago and have loved everything she writes. I love N.C. authors (I am a native) and enjoy her crisp writing style. She never takes you on a side trip. It is propulsive all the way. One of my favorite authors, and making my way through her backlist in between all my new ARCs.

This book is unique and unlike any others, but when reading parts of it, I am reminded of these (all favorites too).

~Kimberly Belle: Side of the road pick up Lizzy The Personal Assistant Except K.B.'s gal was a maid at a hotel, and the guy who picked her up was a wealthy businessman instead of a doctor.

~Lisa Unger: Cabin, Beth Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six Trapped. The creepy property manager and cameras.

~Clemence Michallon: Lizzy held hostage in the basement The Quiet Tenant Beth: Shed. It comes out June 2023 (so good). My favorite!

~B.A. Paris: Lizzy and Beth trapped The Prisoner.

~Freida McFadden: The Housemaid and The Housemaid's Secret Lizzy/Beth's past and using it against her.

Secrets never rest—they demand to be uncovered in the relentless pages of 'You Can't Hide’……

Book Information

You Can’t Hide, written by Emily Shiner, is a 225-page thriller published on February 19, 2023. The audiobook, narrated by Emily Durante, spans 6 hours and 15 minutes. Thank you to Dreamscape Media for providing me with an advance reader copy of this book for review.

Summary

Beth's past catches up with her just when she thought she had escaped. Desperate for a child, she and Ian sell a family cabin to fund IVF. However, the caretaker, Ryan, knows her dark secret and blackmails her. Beth faces a devastating choice: reveal the truth and risk losing everything or commit unspeakable acts to protect her secrets.

My Thoughts

In 'You Can't Hide,' the past returns with a vengeance, turning lives into twisted puzzles waiting to be solved. The book, by Emily Shiner, is a captivating psychological thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. With an atmospheric setting, an intricate plotline, and plenty of twists, this book is a truly enjoyable read.

The story unfolds through two different timelines and is written from multiple points of view, offering insights into the thoughts and perspectives of the main characters. This adds depth to the narrative and helps maintain a sense of believability, even during moments that might stretch plausibility.

Shiner's writing is exceptional, with vivid descriptions that bring the scenes to life and immerse readers in the story. The pacing is fast, with constant action and short chapters that make it difficult to put the book down. The suspense is palpable, and the book delivers all the elements one would expect from a gripping psychological thriller.

While the book offers an engaging reading experience, it's important to note that it includes graphic portrayals of sadistic domestic violence, which may be distressing for some readers.

The ending of the book may also divide opinions. Personally, I found it somewhat dissatisfying and felt that the story could have concluded a bit earlier. However, individual preferences may vary, and others have expressed great satisfaction with how the book wraps up.

The audiobook narration by Emily Durante is excellent, as she skillfully brings the characters to life. Her ability to vocally manage multiple characters and distinguish their voices adds an immersive layer to the storytelling.

Recommendation

"You Can't Hide" is a compelling psychological thriller that offers a suspenseful and immersive reading experience, filled with twists and tension that will keep readers hooked until the final pages. Recommended.

"You Can't Hide" was a twisty and engaging thriller with strong and compelling characterizations.

TRIGGERS: Domestic violence, domestic violence, and more domestic violence.

At times, the book was difficult to listen to because of the extent and frequency of the sadistic domestic violence portrayed.

Many aspects of the book's plotline were extremely farfetched and this took stars off my rating.

Also negatively impacting my rating was the fact that the book was predictable. I easily guessed the book's major twist early on.

I listened to the audiobook read by Emily Durante.

Although Emily Durante did a superb job with the narration, the book would have benefited from two narrators since it unfolded from two POVs.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars rounded down. **TRIGGER WARNING** domestic Abuse/Violence.

Beth and Ian are desperate to have a child, so much so that they decide to sell his family cabin in upstate New York to pay for IVF. When they arrive at the cabin, they meet Ryan, the caretaker. But Ryan isn't who he says he is. He's here because he knows Beth has a dark secret. And now he intends to use it against her. He threatens to tell Ian everything aboyt Beth;s past unless she does exactly what he says.

with an atmospheric setting, lota of twists and a good plotline, this is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Beth thought she had escaped from her past until Ryan turned up. The pace is fast, and it's told from Beth and Lizzy's perspectives. You never knew what was going to happen next. The tension builds throughout the book. I was shocked by the ending. I could not put this book down.

This book had such a twist! There were two women characters who narrated this book and had two completely different stories to tell. I was waiting the entire time to figure out how their stories aligned or if they did! Two different women with two different stories. How will their thrilling adventures turn out?

Is it that hard to be the perfect wife?

📸📸📸📸
“You Can’t Hide” tells two interlacing stories. The audiobook narrator was mesmerizing and I finished the book in a day. This is my third thriller by Emily Shiner and all were excellent!

Lizzy is a waitress who meets Zachery—the gorgeous new doctor in town—when her car breaks down. They date, he proposes, and she moves into his beautiful home. She feels like the luckiest woman in the world until Zachery turns controlling and insists she becomes the perfect wife. Before she met him she drove a car that was constantly breaking down, she waited tables at a diner and was always broke. Is being married to Zachery really that bad?

Beth is happily married to Ian, except they haven’t been able to have a baby. They’re selling Ian’s family cabin and hoping it will cover IVF treatments. The cabin is in a secluded area of mountain in upstate NY and they head up there, planning to clean it out. But when they reach the cabin, they find evidence that someone has been staying in it.

Lizzy and Beth alternate telling their POVs. The author threw in some impressive twists that were unexpected and made this an intense read.

Sincere thanks to Dreamscape Media for the complimentary advanced audiobook recording they provided through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

You Can't Hide kept me up late at night and pretty much checked all my fear boxes: Narcissism, stalking, remote locations, and psychopathy. I think thrillers speak to people differently based on what terrifies us the most, and this one had no mercy for me!

The story jumps back and forth between Lizzy and Beth, who both find themselves in dangerous situations. Lizzy, in her own home with her husband who is a successful surgeon, and Beth, in a remote cabin in the mountains where she and her husband are preparing the property to sell so they can afford IVF treatments. I don't want to give too many details away because it will ruin everything, but there is high tension on every single page! I was not even in the mood for a thriller when I sat down to read this, and ended up finishing it in one sitting. I literally. could. not. put. it. down. If you want to feel enraged for the FMCs, want to be horrified with how much the "best people in town" can get away with, and have a total "this could be me" feeling, this is the book for you!

Thank you to Netgalley, Emily Shiner, and the publishers at Inkubator Books available for this to read! I want to read everything this author writes now- She really had me hooked at the end of her line and reeled me all the way in. I want more!

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

I really loved Emily Durante’s narration on this book! She seamlessly transformed into multiple characters and I was always able to tell who was speaking. The story itself takes place in two different timelines and was a little confusing at first until you start to see more of the picture and where things are headed. The story really pulled me in and I felt so strongly for some of the characters, mainly hatred but also sadness for their situation. If you’re into psychological thrillers you should definitely check this book out!

I received a copy of this book through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

This story is told with alternating chapters between Lizzy and Beth.

As the story starts, Lizzy meets Zachary —her knight in shining armor—after her car breaks down and she’s trying to hitch a ride to her job at a diner. Zachary is the new doctor in the small town where she lives. She soon learns that he’s not as he seemed at first, but she has a secret, too.

Beth and her husband Ian are traveling on foot through the snow in upstate New York to his family’s cabin to clear it out to sell. When they make it to the cabin, Beth realizes that someone has been in the cabin very recently. Ian says it’s the caretaker, Ryan. When Ryan shows up at the cabin the next day, Beth feels like he is dangerous.

This was a quick, easy read that kept my attention. I liked Lizzy and Beth as characters. If you like short chapters, then this book is for you. This is also a nice read for winter. I would read another book by this author.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'You Can't Hide' by Emily Shiner.

Read and reviewed for Zooloo's Book Tours, NetGalley, Emily Shiner and Inkubator Books.

Publication date 19th February 2023.

This is the third book I have read by this author. I have also read 'The Caretaker' and 'I'm Following You' which I would highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching gorgeous cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. I am also a huge fan of Emily and of this is half as good as her 'The Caretaker' and 'I'm Following You' it is guaranteed to be a page turner!! I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Inkubator Books. I have yet to read a book published by Inkubator Books that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 32 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Alabama and North Carolina, USA 🇺🇸

This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonists are Lizzy and Beth. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.

Emily does it yet again!! I genuinely done think she can make a book that I don't love!! Love, love, loved this book!!!! Absolutely gripping edge of your seat page turner!!!

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene and put you in the storyline. The cover and synopsis suit the book perfectly.

The storyline was captivating and addictive from the first page until the last and I was completely invested in it. It was absolutely rammed full of lies, secrets, tension, twists, suspense and everything you could ask for in a page turning psychological thriller. I just could not put this book down and finished it in one sitting. The atmosphere of an isolated cabin was absolutely perfect for the storyline that makes the hair on your arms stand on edge. It was extremely fast paced with something constantly happening to keep you addicted. Every time I kept telling myself one more chapter the one I was in ended at a point where there was no way I could stop reading so I absolutely devoured it in one sitting!! It was absolutely ram packed with mystery, secrets, tension, suspense and absolutely everything you could ask for in a psychological thriller. I absolutely love Emily's books and am guaranteed to be shocked every time I pick one up which is not an easy feat considering how many books I read a year so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Emily!!! One of the things I love about her books is that they can also be quite thought provoking and always end with MASSIVE BOMBSHELLS that I absolutely love and never do see coming. Emily's evocative writing drags you deep into the storyline from the first sentence to the very last and will keep you up until the very last word! THAT ladies and gentleman is a true sign of an absolute must read. I absolutely loved the ending which was definitely an unexpected twist which is just one of the reasons I love Emily's books, she manages to get me every single time!! I've said it before about Emily's books and I shall say it again!! I would absolutely LOVE to see this turned into a movie and would wait up all night to get tickets to watch it!!

An intriguing and clever page turner that will keep you up all night!!

I hope your busy writing your next book Emily as I just cannot wait to see what bombshell twist and explosive storyline you have up your sleeve for us next!!!!

Do not start this book until you have cleared your schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!

The characters were all realistic and strong and I was completely invested in them throughout. I love the fact that we got to see what was happening from the points of view of both Lizzy and Beth and to know why they were doing what they were and how they were feeling throughout. Emily weaves their chapters together with perfect timing until it all comes together with an explosive BANG!! It also explains absolutely everything which leaves no question unanswered at the end which is a pet hate of mine!! This also really helps the reader understand them more making them more realistic to the reader. I really clicked with most of the characters apart from one who I could not stand and that I had a bad feeling about from the start after noticing some red herrings. I thought they needed some serious psychological help and had no sympathy for them and what happened. I felt sorry for 'Lizzy' by and 'Beth' for what they went through along with Ian who I really liked. Unfortunately, I really can not say anymore as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. You will just have to pick up your copy to find out who is right, who was wrong and what happens to them all and trust me you will not regret it!!! Regardless of what I thought about who, each character worked perfectly to make this page turning psychological thriller!!!

Congratulations Emily on yet ANOTHER huge success. This is why you are in my favourite 5 authors list!! Here's to your next success 🥂!!

"There's nothing down here I can use as a weapon, nothing that will save me from my husband when he gets home."

Beth and Ian are at his cabin to spruce it up before they put it up for sale. But it sure seems like someone has been there, living there, as recently as that day. A dead deer is sprawled out on the front steps and someone wearing hunter orange is skulking around the property. Nothing about the situation is quite right.

Lizzy and Zachary are married and he's not at all the man he portrayed himself to be in the early days. He's controlling, abusive, and obsessed with perfection. He's also smart and calculating which, thus far, had eliminated any escape or self defense for poor Lizzy.

How do this stories coincide? What or who is their common denominator?

"But I've killed to save myself once before. And I won't have a problem doing it again."

Captivating, addictive, fast-paced, tense--I loved this book and absolutely devoured it. Shiner is one of my favorite authors and she knocked it out of the park with this twisted thriller.

OH

MY

GOD

This book was mental, dark, and twisty and that clanger at the end was so frigging cold.

I know I will always have a ride with Emily’s books and the terrifying thing, well they could almost be true! Two stories alternate throughout the book, I spent ages connecting the dots and I was smug that I got it right… However, it’s not something to be smug about because well… The truth was horrifying!

I love how intense this book is! I read it in two sittings. I am still thinking about this book and worrying and praying for someone. I can’t tell you who! I just hate how it ends for one person but after a beat, I saw it coming and it had me racing through the pages.

I frigging loved it! It is addictive and it made me scream (internally) a lot and boy the hatred! So much hatred for one of the characters. Grrrr still have a lot of anger for them!!!!

I think I have read one of my favourite books already this year and Emily is definitely one of my favourite authors

As promised, Happy Release Day!

4.5 ⭐️ — it’s so good to be back to psycho mind and read this sort of story. I
was amazed that this 2 character POV did not affect me at all on the storyline and confused me. It makes me wondering throughout the storyline especially the truth all over. This book questioning me ALL the damn time about what would happen next and who is who and which one telling the truth?

The story started when Lizzy walking to her work place and met Zach on the way, he offer her a ride and they talked in the car about the reason why Lizzy walking not driving. Then, Zach offer to help her with the car if Lizzy give him the car key, Lizzy obliged and once the car was fixed, Zach invite her to dinner. After that, they started to do romantical stuff and Zach asked her to marry him, Lizzy say yes even with hesitation but that’s when everything turned upside down. Zach was not someone she thought. Her world being upside down and being a dutiful perfect wife on Zach’s perspective all the time. He was abusive like her own father. Because of that, she started to plan to kill Zach which almost the same as how she killed her own father. She escaped but not long she met someone else and almost live happily ever after until the day in the cabin.

The Storyline, was giving me the thrill and that nervous feeling all time damn time! Then, the cliffhanger on each end of chapter truly making me cannot put the book down for a bit! A damn page turner, I even finished it in one sitting! The choice of words the author choose for this book truly hold me into my place and give me nervous, suspense and wondering what ifs. I love the way Emily pour the tension of the book and transfer it to the reader. The story about Zach and Lizzy was psycho in a good way, I’m not laughing and not being pity over Lizzy because she choose it on her own and they both psycho in their own way IMO. Then, the story about Beth and Ian was also almost as fuck up as ever. However, the way Ian treated Beth after what happen was quite logical. The storyline of this book hold not only focus on the victim of the abuser but also focusing on the abuser way. I truly adore the way Zach mind works!!! Nevertheless, the thing about Zach family’s and Lizzy past did not add up and seems odd and unfinished. I need more about it in some epilogue or one chapter more.

Issues this book holds:
The Runners, focusing on Lizzy especially and maybe Zach because they must be runaway from something and choose this small part of town to hide. Emily even mentioned it on the storyline on Lizzy’s narrative
”Everyone says you can hide in a big city, like New York City, but I don’t think that’s true. When nobody is going to find you, then you need to huddle down in a place people aren’t likely to look”
(Page 19) This psycho mind is something else, don’t you think?
Let them pass 3 months trial. I’m not gonna lie that when Zach asked Lizzy to marry him after 3 months knowing each other, it was just too soon to be true. And in this point, Zach thinking is a damn way more better than Lizzy. Everybody has a trial most likely for three months and even though Lizzy was asking herself if she should say yes than she should say no rather than regretting the way thei marriage turns out.
The Apple falls closer with the trees The way Zach control her because he wanted her to be perfect wife for him in his own way is some sort of psychological response on how his father treated his mother. It runs down in the family (as far as I know from the storyline). Even though it is too much to bear, the child see what the parents do and the imitate, Zach see how doting his father to his mother is and if he think his father as a hero, he would probably imitate him. He do almost exactly what his father do towards his mother and he applied it to Lizzy. I as a reader only get a glimpse of Zach’s family story not much but I get that conclusion because of that.
The Wolf in the Sheep. Focusing on Zach side it wasn’t odd at all to think that he is being a doctor so he can kill people easily especially people who wronged him or he just don’t like them. He has a mind of a genius as a psycho because he wouldn’t get caught and nobody suspecting a doctor because they always help people in the cover. And in Zach mind, he bring his enemies closer in a safe-charming way as being a doctor. Brilliant!
The “I deserve” this. Lizzy attract someone the same as her father most probably because she cannot lie and has not heal the wound from her past. Then, she ended up with psycho Zach like her own father. Her subconscious telling her that she deserve this.
The mirror. I see this when Beth see that Ryan cannot trust her fully because it reflect on herself how she treat stranger. It almost like: How can I trust people when I do not even know how to trus them myself?

The Characters, Zach and Jacob is my favorite. Their way of thinking as a psycho give me all the happy feeling and the thrill all over. I LOVE THEM in an adoration way, but if they are your stalker or your husband; RUN.

To conclude, I am in love with Emily’s writing and I would love to see her previous works or will look up to her works in the future. Because her writing and how she transfer all the thrill to the readers give me the creep. The issue this book holds also has some moral value in it. Even though the storyline about some character’s past and their families were not finished. However, for mystery-thriller book with less than 200 page, this book worth to read.

I think, the title of the book would be much better for “It’s Perfect”

A first for me reading this author but not my last. A quick engaging domestic suspense with two storylines that converged at the end. The audiobook narrator provided a dynamic performance that added to the story’s tense atmosphere.

The first plot arc involved domestic violence so be warned if this is a trigger for you. This arc was also OTT yet still kept the reader hanging on to every word to see how it would play out. The second arc was quite repetitive for the first few chapters and a tad annoying. It used the over used element of boy gaslights girl I.e. girl knows that something is off but boy keeps telling her there’s nothing to worry about. The ending also didn’t quite work for me. I understood what it was trying to accomplish but I had some unanswered questions that weren’t addressed.

Overall, it was a thriller that I think many readers will get pulled into and find entertaining. However, one that had a few cracks that got in the way of this being a five star book for me.. It is worth reading some other reviews for different perspectives.

Thank you to Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for an audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I had the pleasure of listening to this incredible thriller on audio, and I must say, I absolutely adored it! While it may not have been perfect, it had everything I could ever want in a suspenseful story. From the very beginning, it had me hooked with its intriguing secrets and suspenseful plot twists. The characters were exceptionally well-developed, each with their own hidden agendas and motivations, which kept me guessing until the very end.

What truly impressed me was the clever writing style employed throughout the narrative. The author skillfully crafted a web of tension and intrigue, leaving me on the edge of my seat, eager to uncover the truth. The pacing was superb, with just the right balance of anticipation and surprise.

And let's not forget the ending! It was satisfying and tied up all the loose ends, providing a satisfying resolution to the story. I found myself reflecting on the twists and turns long after the final chapter concluded.

In summary, this thrilling audiobook had it all: secrets, suspense, great characters, clever writing, and a nice ending. It captured my attention from start to finish, delivering an immersive experience that left me wanting more. I highly recommend it to any fan the genre.

You Can't Hide by Emily Shiner is another compulsive read from this popular author, and I flew through the pages in a few enjoyable hours.

Beth and Ian are desperate for a child of their own, so much so that they are willing to sell the family cabin to pay for IVF. Upon arrival they meet Ryan, a caretaker who is not what he seems. Ryan, in fact, knows Beth's secrets, and threatens to expose all if she does not comply with his diabolical demands. Beth knows that she must do whatever it takes to protect herself, no matter how extreme the measures.

You are guaranteed to race through this cleverly plotted, multiple POV narrative.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an ARC.

The dual point of view of Lizzy and Beth is pretty good. I did guess what was happening with Beth around chapters 10-14. That did not make me enjoy this story any less.

Suspense-Thriller to its core.

Reading about Lizzy and Zachary works me up. Were there any red flags? Did anyone wonder about Lizzy? Why she never went out? Hair-raising.

Yawn

This book is painfully slow. No character development whatsoever. I was halfway through the book and Beth was still looking through the cabin imagining someone watching her. The ending was a "cliffhanger" that really left you more annoyed than intrigued. I dont know how I finished this one.

You Can't Hide is a thriller, and a story of a victim not wanting to be a victim anymore. Beth and Ian want to have a child desperately. They decide to try IVF, but the only way they can fund it is to sell the family cabin in upstate New York. Ian convinces Beth to go with him to fix it up, but once she gets there, she feels uneasy. Someone has been living in the cabin, and her senses tell her that things aren't what they seem. At the same time, we meet Lizzie, a young woman who is married to an abusive doctor in Alabama. Lizzie is desperate to escape her husband. As these two stories unfold, you know they will come together, but the conclusion was still twisty and held some surprises. This was a relatively short thriller that held my attention from beginning to end. I was more invested in Lizzie's story, especially as I wanted her to get away from her psychopath of a husband. Triggers in this book include various forms of domestic violence. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Emily Durante. She is a voice actress that I have listened to many times and I enjoy her voices, expression and tone. If you enjoy this format, I recommend the audiobook, but any format will have the same sense of thrills and gripping storyline.

I was really excited for this book, but it ended up disappointing me.
First, nothing about the description of this book tells you that it's dual POV. We aren't just following Beth and her husband, but are also following Lizzy and her husband, and during the 1/3rd of the book that I read, I felt we spent much more time with Lizzy than Beth.
Second, if you've read a decent amount of thrillers, you'll be able to guess the twist pretty quickly, I had figured it out within 5%, and I'm not usually good at guessing twists.
Third, and my biggest issue with this book, is that nothing in the description tells you that one of the POVs (Lizzy) is largely about her abusive relationship. Her husband is manipulative, emotionally and physically abusive. He seems to have little to no redeeming qualities, and we are given very little insight into the development of their relationship, so his abuse goes from zero to 100 very quickly. This wouldn't necessarily have ruined the book for me, but I just read The Drowning Woman, and liked that one much more, so this one was just feeling really disappointing.
This book just really wasn't for me, but if the concept sounds interesting, you might enjoy it.
