Easy tricks can turn a packet of cake mix into a party triumph to suit any theme. This book contains 60 cake recipes (plus cute party cakelets) to show readers the possibilities. It includes a pattern sheet for many of the designs, and each recipe is illustrated with a colour photograph.
Very good for ideas, even if you dont copy the exact theme. The ingredients are mainly the basics in your cupboard, so the cost of making the cake is very reasonable. Highly recommended for anyone with children - small or grown up!
Australian readers will need no further recommendation than that this book is brought to you by team who wrote the cake book: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...
Following the same principles as the original, the cakes in this book are made from packet cake mixes in simple shapes, cutting the more complex designs, and decorating with icing and lollies. This book contains a lot more cutting templates than 'The Train Book', so check before you pick your designs!
Some of my favourite designs in this new book include a pineapple (looks like the lolly, not a real pineapple - yum!), a hamburger (only suitable for pre-teens who don't mind eating things that look like lunch but taste like sugar), a proper castle (jam roll turrets, grey icing, arrow slits), Spiderman, an elegant and simple fondant icing & licorice chessboard.
The star design in my household has been the treasure map cake, made on a simple rectangle base, decorated with spearmint leaf palm trees, jelly ocean, Toblerone mountains and a licorice X marks the spot. One of the simplest and most dramatic cakes I've ever made.
This one rates 5 stars for clear instructions, great photos, practical but effective designs and of course the joy of poring through the book anticipating your birthday!
