Award-winning photographer Rachael Hale's 101 SALIVATIONS is a delightful collection of 101 dog portraits that will become a must-have for dog lovers everywhere. Rachael Hale's signature style catches the eye of everyone who comes across it. Featuring 101 color photographs of Chihuahuas, Great Danes, and everything in between, 101 SALIVATIONS presents dogs in all sorts of wonderful poses that bring out their most endearing characteristics. Rachael's secret to capturing a dog's soul is to focus on his eyes-whether they are wide and shining, or heavy-lidded, in the throes of slumber. Within this book we can see the soul of our own best buddies staring back at us. The book is peppered with humorous and touching quotations from well-known authors such as A.A. Milne and Fran Lebowitz. Following in the paw prints of 101 SALIVATIONS, Rachael Hale's 101 CATACLYSMS is a charming and playful tribute to the world's most popular pet. This collection features 101 images of magnificent felines. Hale's special rapport with animals has allowed her to capture the essence of her subjects. You will see it in the bald-faced cheekiness of Hilander, the sphinx; in the sassiness of Puffy, the Persian ball of fluff; and in the playfulness of Yabba Dabba Doo, the British shorthair. 101 CATACLYSMS also contains quotations from well-known personalities-such as James Herriot's ``Cats are the connoisseurs of comfort''-that will tickle the reader as they peruse this gem of a book.
A cute book of cat photography. The only thing I would change is to include some rescues. These all seemed to be purebred, and the book could have been a great way to encourage saving shelter cats’ lives.
'101 Cataclysms: For the Love of Cats' is undoubtedly one of the finest books of cat photographs that is on the market; each cat is named and its breed given and almost all of them are in restful positions. This is not surprising for a cat!
Rachael Hale is one of the world's leading animal portrait photographers and she admirably uses that experience to capture the unique personality of each and every mischievous model in the adorable photographs within the book. How she managed to capture the many moods and bring out the characteristics of each cat in the collection must surely have tested her patience to the limit! In fairness, in her acknowledgements, Rachael does recognise that it took a team effort to produce the book, which is not surprising.
The photographs are complemented by quirky cat quotations and poems, from such notables as Mark Twain, Dr Seuss, Edward Lear, Tom Jones and others. And a couple of diverse quotations start the collection off: Carl Perkins' line from 'Blue Suede Shoes' 'It's one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go cat go!' (a must for an aged rock 'n' roller like myself) is followed by a more serious comment from Leonardo da Vinci 'The smallest feline is a masterpiece' - and so the scene is set.
Two of Rachael Hale's own cats, black domestic longhairs, feature early on as, Gianni and Versace cuddle together in a rather small bowl before Maximus, a very tiny British shorthair, is seen, eyes closed (no surprise there) on its owner's hand. Later on Guiness [sic] and Fatboy, two domestic shorthairs, also cuddle together in an even smaller bowl to demonstrate just how cosy two cats can be in confined spaces.
The magnificent photographs are too many to mention - we would have to delineate the whole book to do it full justice - but some of the treasures are: Tahlullah, a jet black Bombay who is apparently stone-deaf, looking comfortable, but quite menacing with her claws exposed, set against a jet black background; little Venezia, a brown tabby Tiffanie, after she has just enjoyed a romp inside a newspaper and is anxiously looking out to see if her owner is impressed with her efforts; Castello, a snow marbled Bengal, who is sitting just like a human on an armchair surveying all before her; Vadak, a chocolate shaded Burmilla, who is looking perplexed about the whole photographing exercise; Casper, a tiny blue point British shorthair, who is popping out of the top of a milk jug - I wonder if he drank it first?; Naomi, an Asian leopard, who in close up peering through the grass looks just like one and it is no wonder that the associated quotation is Sarah Orme Jewell's 'When she walked ... she stretched out long and thin like a tiger; and held her head high to look over the grass as if she were treading the jungle' and the delightful Cupcake, a foreign white Oriental, who lives up to her name by resting her head and paws on, yes, you've got it, a selection of cupcakes! Cupcake does not even look phased by the experience, either as she sleeps remorselessly on!
Cats have undoubtedly beguiled, bewitched and blessed us with their company since the civilised world began and seeing Rachael Hale's photographs brings those feelings very much to the fore.
"It's one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go, cat go!"
Such an adorable book. And how can it not be with 101 cats? :)
I had many melting moments with the book and enjoyed those pretty photographs and cute quotes. Not to mention that I also had lots of fun reading the cats names and being amused by the creativity people have for cat names. This one on the cover is Vivaldi. :D
101 Cataclysms: For the Love of Cats was another excellent Rachael Hale book. This book features cat quotes and both color and b&w photographs. In this book almost all of the quotes are also found in Meow: I Love Cats along with some of the same pictures. This book has less quotes and more pictures than Meow: I Love Cats. Both are great books to look through - though I think this one may be slightly better - partly because it's a larger book = larger pictures (and one fold out page). Great for cat/animal lovers.
with a fun title and subtitle, I was expecting funny captions and funny stories paired with the pictures of cats and kittens. but alas, there was not. this book has the type of cat labeled with each picture. in the appendix there is a story of photographing each cat. I would have loved the story on the same page as the photograph.
This is a sweet photography book with a number of different breeds. The photos are interspersed with various quotes about cats (which cat lovers will recognize and appreciate).
Not much more to say other than it made me seek out my cat and subject her to cuddling. :)
What can you say? It's cats...big, small, fuzzy, sleek, kittens, adults, of all stripes(pun intended). If you have a cat as a companion in your life, or if you just like cats, this is a book you'll enjoy.
I really enjoyed this book! The author, Rachael Hale, did a very good job with her photographs of each cat, as well as interesting details about each subject and about her interaction with them. If you like cats, you will enjoy this book too.
The large photos are decent but the few qoutes are overused in cat books. I would have enjoyed it if the qoutes were replaced with the information on the cats found in the back of the book.
This was given to me as a gift. I love the photos they are just beautiful. I must look through this at least once a month or so, because it just makes me happy. I am a cat person, so I appreciate their beauty on so many levels. I have my own live cats too, but a car is a cat is a cat, and each one is so unique I love to look at them all.
Clearly this has gone beyond the jurisdiction of the Cute Police.. I'm calling in for back up. We need the F.B.I. on this one, that is, the Furry Bureau of Investigation. Far too cute for one kitten.
Gotta admit i love Rachael Hale photographs who makes a living out of photagraphing adorable kitties and puppies and i am so very susceptible to them all. Just TOO CUTE! http://talesofarampaginglibrarian.blo...
Thou art the Great Cat, the avenger of the Gods and the judge of words, and the president of the sovereign chiefs and the governor of the holy Circle; thou art indeed…the Great Cat
this is just a really cute book if you love cats. it's not funny as hell like the "i can has cheezburgers" book, but it still has a lot of really cute pics...
It's hard not to "ooh" and "aww" over such an adorable book. I do wish the author would have included more mixed breed kitties, who are just as cute as the purebreds.
The captions and the pictures in this book will delight any lover of cats and witticisms. A great coffee table book to just look through when you have a few spare minutes.
