This anthology offers a lively introduction to the study of fiction, poetry, and drama, and is appropriate for introduction to literature courses as well as literature-based composition courses.
Known for its clear presentation of the formal elements of literary analysis, DiYanni's Literature effectively balances classical, modern, and contemporary works across the three major genres, blending well-known writers with a diverse gathering of newer, international figures. This literary breadth is supplemented by extensive coverage of writing about literature, making DiYanni an excellent resource for literature instructors who want a full-featured anthology.
Robert DiYanni is an adjunct professor of humanities and an instructional consultant at the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at New York University. In these capacities he teaches courses on critical thinking, interdisciplinary humanities, commerce and culture, and business and its publics, and conducts workshops and consultations with faculty throughout the university on aspects of pedagogical practice. Before coming to NYU, Dr. DiYanni taught at Queens College and Pace University and as a visiting professor at Harvard. He also served, for ten years, as Director of International Services at The College Board.
I enjoyed using this anthology with my AP Literature students. There are many great selections within this collection. My students' favorite was definitely "The Yellow Wallpaper" while The Metamorphosis they did not enjoy as much. The wide array of poems was another highlight enjoyed though, looking at about 30 of them in our March Madness unit. One of these poems included "A Pity we were such a Good Invention" which was a new one for me. I always love when my students open my eyes to new pieces of literature and see them with a new perspective and passion. Definitely would recommend using this collection to other teachers!
I don't know that I will ever finish reading this book - it's over 2000 pages. It was a book required for a literature class and is a great resource for so many writers and all genres. The writers/poets/playwrights I have enjoyed the most are Sherman Alexie, Alice Walker, Lorraine Hansberry, Kate Chopin, Franz Kafka, Theodore Roethke, and Langston Hughes
This is the COOLEST collection of literature. It's huge and a pain to carry around but it's so good! It has a ton of great things and tons of space to write notes in the margins. My only problem was that the pages were kind of delicate and I thought I could easily rip them but other than that, not a single complain. It has all of Hamlet and Othello! It is huge!! =)
I found this to be a great anthology and an insightful textbook. It seems to alternate between those modes. In any case, I'd absolutely recommend this for a cover-to-cover reading, as unappealing as that seems at first glance. Yes, it's quite thick. (So thick, in fact, that the pages are bible-esque in their thickness and feel.) But it's worth it.
I am a glutton for textbook literature compilations. What more could you ask for? All of the greats in one HUGE book. Hawthorne, Frost, Mansfield.... ahhhh, I am in Bookworm Heaven!!!
