“A panoramic overview of a spectacular and refined art form . . . eminently readable as well as beautiful.”― Antiques & the Arts In this beautifully illustrated book, Walter Denny presents a vision of one of the best-known and most internationally renowned Islamic art forms: Iznik ceramics. Covering both Iznik pieces de forme and the famous Iznik tiles that decorate Ottoman imperial monuments, the book integrates the entire spectrum of Iznik production, both tiles and wares, and the broader artistic tradition in which it originated.
The book showcases the array of motifs―floral, vegetal, and figurative―used on Iznik wares, looks at the relationship between non-Moslem communities and the Ottoman empire, and closes with an examination of the rich stylistic heritage that Iznik ceramics have given to Western art. Lavishly illustrated in color throughout, this is a panoramic overview of a spectacular and refined art form. 206 color photographs
really interesting book, had to return to the library but I love learning about history through art. might get again so for now it's going into 'maybe later'
This magnificent book is full of high quality photos of tiles and functional ware from Iznik. There is lots of useful information for those interested in the history or reproduction of historical ceramics. Many of the photographs are close-ups of pieces providing more detail than often seen in similar books. The book is a large coffee table sized format which allows for larger photographs overall. There are plenty of resources listed at the back of the book for further research.
