Former Senator Remington Vance led the race for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination. But coming up fast in the primaries was Loy Gravvitt, the free-wheeling Southern populist whose extravagant promises threatened to split the party. Gravvitt had to be stopped, and Gerald O'Flaherty, Vance's campaign manager, was the man of the hour. All O'Flaherty had to do was find that one flaw in Gravvitt's past that would turn the voters against him. That's all O'Flaherty intended, but when Gravvitt's past produced an illegitimate son with a brooding mind and a murderous heart, not only the party but the entire nation was in for an explosive act that would rock it to its foundations.
