Former Senator Remington Vance led the race for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination. But coming up fast in the primaries was Loy Gravvitt, the free-wheeling Southern populist whose extravagant promises threatened to split the party. Gravvitt had to be stopped, and Gerald O'Flaherty, Vance's campaign manager, was the man of the hour.
