"Creatures of the flying longings" is a collection of artsy/surreal pieces, written in August 1989. I first thought it was another story collection. But Al-Kharrat never fails to surprise me every time. I started reading and found 9 short pieces that can hardly be categorized as fiction at all. Its like 9 prose poems. Every piece is a mix of dream sequences/ fragmented recollection of probably moments from the author's life/ weird mystical, philosophical musings fused with big time spiritual ecstacy like revalations- mostly in a coptic christian or ancient egyptian mythos settings and imagery-/ Eros and thanatos-physics i.e materialism & metaphysics dialectics and of course Edward's sublime prose. I dont know if this collection has ever been translated into eng. It a shame. That's why I try to write about obscure arabic- and other non western lit- just to shed some lights on the fact that there are more colours in the rainbow spectrum.
