When Kaelyn Cramer, an attractive, independent, outdoor trailguide, lands in the arms of Immortal, Alexander MacLeod, her first thought is that he's exactly like the terrifying man she's running from. Growing up on her own in foster homes, she fights placing her trust in anyone, let alone an immortal man.
Alexander, with his jaded past, tries to remind himself that Kaelyn is only a means to an end in catching his rogue brethren, Cain, another Immortal that's after Kaelyn. But when Kaelyn truly needs Alexander's help and protection as they go back in time to 12th century Scotland, Alexander's heart begins to soften as he finds himself bending over backwards for Kaelyn.
Can Kaelyn trust Alexander with her life and learn to embrace his love? Will Alexander realize he still has a chance at happiness, that is, before Cain takes it from him?
This is the second book in the Immortal Series. Be sure to read the first installment, Immortal of My Dreams.
Alexis McNeil is an American author with four novels under her belt, all part of the Immortal Series. She has a passion for writing and transforming her dreams into stories!
She resides in Pennsylvania with her husband and two teen daughters where she splits her time between being a kitchen designer, a busy mother, a loving wife, and a romance writer!
Alexis McNeil was born in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1978. When she was two years old, the family moved to Littleton, Colorado where they enjoyed the sunshine, snow, and mountains. She spent the next seven years riding bikes, camping in the mountains, playing with friends, and dreaming of bigger things with her sister and brothers. Eventually, the family moved a final time out east to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she now resides.
An alum of BPHS, at twenty she attended Pittsburgh Technical Institute where she completed an Associate’s degree in Computer-Aided Drafting, while working full time as a hostess and server. After graduating, she worked at an architect firm, the kitchen department in a lumber yard, and finally as a Kitchen Designer. In her early 30’s she realized that writing was not something she wanted only as a hobby, that she worked on here and there, but a passion that she wanted to incorporate into her daily life. Simply put, writing lets her soul speak.
Currently, she’s hard at work on her next novel, a paranormal romance featuring two alpha males, one with a penchant for danger and the other, a zealous man who goes after what he wants. Both are intrigued by Scottie Jane, a complex gal who has a habit of finding trouble.
I really enjoyed book 2. I wonder if I read this one first? I wouldn’t have read this in order because book 1 was so bland I’d have stopped reading the series. In this book the heorine is truly a heorine of an adventure where she saves the world...how kickass! We readers also learn the history of the Guardians and immortal warriors and of how they tie into the Fae. This had some slow spots but I think this was to help the romance be more realistic. I know this is just a 4 book series but I’m bummed we don’t get Hunters story because he deserves one! I also would have thought the other warriors finding love (13 warriors so 9 have already found love before book one begins). That is book material!
Anyway, if you like a slow burn with time travel, some adventure and magic, it’s one to read.
Now this one was much better. Much is explained about the origins of the Guardians and immortals as well as the Fae. It was quite an enjoyable adventure.
Summary: Kaelyn lives in Colorado and works as a mountain guide. Having grown up in difficult foster-care situations, she has only let a couple of people get close enough for her to trust. Already a loner, she keeps another secret about herself that would make her seem even more strange to others; twice a year on Beltane and Samhain, she is plagued with headaches, dreams and nausea that last a full week.
Alexander is an Immortal. His job is to do the bidding of the Guardians, a powerful group of magical beings with Celtic ties. There were 13 immortals originally, but their contract with the Guardians allows them each to gain mortality when they find their soulmates. Alexander used his one opportunity for mortality with a woman who didn’t love him in return, and he is now doomed to spend eternity as an Immortal. He has vowed never to trust a woman again.
Alexander’s current task is to hunt down a rogue Immortal, named Cain, who has been using black magic. Alexander discovers that Cain is hunting Kaelyn, but he doesn’t know why. He decides to use her as bait to capture Cain, and he’ll keep her under his protection as long as she is helping him.
As events unfold, Kaelyn and Alexander choose to travel back to 12th century Scotland to search for the reason why Cain is stalking Kaelyn. They learn more about each other during their travels, as well as learning more about Kaelyn’s destiny. But until the final hours, they have no idea where this journey will take them.
Review: Ho-hum. I was underwhelmed by the relationship. It was just another romance where the two main characters pushed each other away through the whole book - even though they were clearly in love. The setting and names might change, but I’ve read this story a hundred times before. Throwing in a manipulative ex-girlfriend made it about as cliché as it could possibly be.
I did really appreciated that the author switched from first person POV (Immortal of my Dreams) to third person in this novel. I thought this was a huge improvement in how the story was told.
Other than the love story, the other elements of the book were interesting and creative. I thought it was a great idea to give Kaelyn a job as a mountain guide in the 21st century. This profession worked really well in both the modern and medieval parts of the story. Cain’s character made a fantastic villain. He’s one of the good guys in the first book, so his gradual fall into darkness was really interesting (but you would have to read the first book to know that he wasn’t always evil.) From the creation of the Guardians and the Immortals, to the mystery behind Kaelyn’s semi-annual illnesses, to the involvement of the Fae, the pieces of this book fit together really well. In fact, if it weren’t for the disappointing love story, I would have given this book a higher rating.
