Pink Floyd's The Wall is one of the most iconic and imaginative albums in the history of rock music, endlessly discussed and dissected. It is loosely based on the life and experiences of Roger Waters and the stage performances and film were created in close collaboration with Gerald Scarfe. They are currently at work on the new version of the stage show. Gerald retains all the imagery and amongst this massive archive there are hundreds of photographs of the creation, staging and filming of The Wall as well as the live stage performances. Roger has allowed us to reproduce all the interviews and texts associated with the production of the album, the stage performances and the film. This is to be the authorised, definitive book of The Wall.

This book is a fantastic chronicle of how Gerald Scarfe started working with Pink Floyd, from the moment he met the band, to the designs for Roger Waters' 2010-2012 The Wall World Tour, including work for Wish You Were Here, Animals (!!!), Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, The Wall in Berlin 90, and Live 8. This book contains a bunch of unused ideas that help to broaden the whole concept of The Wall as an artistic vision and make it more understandable, it gives more meaning to some of the images, as it explains exactly what they mean and why they are or aren't included in the final product.



I found a couple of misprints (there's a repeated page in my copy, for instance), however, that does not make the experience less enjoyable.



No one can give us a better explanation of the imagery of The Wall but the man whose twisted mind created all those grotesque characters, so don't even doubt in buying it if you ever see it in a library or whatever.

Винаги ще свързвам “Стената” с един от най-достойните хора, които съм срещал в живота си – преподавателя ми от гимназията г-н Йорданов, който има основна заслуга животът ми да потече в руслото, в което е. Един от малцината учители, които наистина повлияха на мисленето ми и ме насочиха в правилна посока. Именно той ни събра един ден след часовете и ни пусна “The Wall” в компютърната зала на даскалото, вече не помня повода. Помня впечатлението, потреса и възбудената наслада от смазването на табутата, което течеше пред очите. Остава си спомен за цял живот.

Pink Floyd is the soundtrack of my life. Seeing Roger Waters recreated The Wall experience with modern technology was amazing. A somewhat twisted story, but I relate in many ways.

This book, written by animator Gerald Scarfe, focuses on the role of animation in Pink Floyd's later live shows, the artwork for the album The Wall, and the film The Wall. If you were coming to this book for insider info on the making of the album, you have come to the wrong place. (This is obvious to folks already familiar with the author's name, but not to those who aren't.) While the book is full of stunning visuals, it doesn't compare to watching the film or seeing the concert live (obviously)--but it also doesn't elevate those experiences nor provide much illuminating information.

Probably good for a superfan's coffee table, but not deep scholarly reading.

I haven't exactly read loads of non-fiction books, so I don't feel very comfortable (or numb, haha) rating this. Of course I enjoyed reading about the infamous weird art of The Wall and how the concept and the film came to be. But there were times where the sometimes repetitive descriptions and confusing interviews felt just like a bit too off for me. Luckily for the book, it happens to be about one of my favourite albums and films and it looks just too good on my shelf to make me in any way regret reading it or owning it.

Предполагам, че с тази книга Джералд Скарф е искал да напомни за себе си. При такова грандиозно и талантливо дело може би наистина не е получил достатъчно признание. Защото името зад „The Wall“ е едно – Pink Floyd. Въпреки сценичното представление, въпреки филма, музикантите явно си остават основата. Но се опитах да си представя „Стената“ само като един музикален албум. Пак уникален и вечен, но… в съзнанието на всички не са ли надуваемите фигури на Учителя, Майката, Жената, Пинк; месо(човеко)мелачката, цветето, кървавите кръстове… Така че, почитания за г-н Скарф… Мястото му наистина е било точно при тази несравнима четворка.

Роджър Уотърс го е познал лесно: “Тоя е луд за връзване. Направо си е за нас!“

Още малко за „главните герои“ в книгата.

„Говореше се, че с Роджър се работи трудно. Аз обаче скоро открих, че имаме еднакво язвително чувство за хумор и че – разменяйки шегички – вече бяхме изградили приятелска връзка.

Ник Мейсън на Скарф: „Сега ще усетиш как Роджър държи юздите. Обикновено прави така.“

Скарф за Рик: „За мен той беше много добър, кротък човек, интроверт, необичайно плах и мълчалив.“

Ник Мейсън: „Според мен всички изпитвахме някаква вина за това, което се случи със Сид, а също и с Рик до известна степен – за това, че като че ли се отчуждихме от него. Винаги съм мислел, че ако не беше Рик, това щеше да се случи с мен.“

Книгата включва спомени, обяснения, записки, разговори; междинни и окончателни проекти на анимацията, малки и големи фотографии на музикантите/екипа и представленията. Интересно беше да видя рисунките на Учителя, Жената, Майката, Бащата и до тях снимки на актьорите във филма. Научих и някои нови неща: имало е разговори с Роалд Дал – да бъде сценарист на филма; Боб Гелдоф не е бил фен на Пинк Флойд; преди Пинк е имало проект за друг герой – Пънч. Това обаче не е ново: „…нищо чудно, че обикновено рокзвездите са леко чалнати.“ (думи на Скарф)

„Винаги съм смятал, че „Goodbye Blue Sky” е моята анимационна поема, посветена на Втората световна война. Видеоклипът с този епизод е гледан в YouTube над пет милиона пъти.“

Роджър Уотърс:
„Тази част е предназначена да покаже как личността му се разпада, ако той изпада в изолация. Как обществото се разпада, ако се оставим да се изолираме едни от други. Идеята за метаморфозата на Пинк от слаб характер в нацистки демагог е доста сюрреалистична, това трябва да си го призная. Това е моята представа за това какво може да се случи вътре в душата ти, ако не даваш външен изра�� на тези неща.“

Запитах се доколко всички тези 5 * са заради самата книга, за автора. Мисля, че са предимно от почитатели на музиката на Пинк Флойд. Или поне на цялостния „продукт“.

Алън Паркър за филма: „Не приличаше на нищо, виждано досега – странна смесица от реални кадри, драматургия и сюрреализъм“.

Книгата безспорно допринесе още към приятелството ми със „Стената“, след като вечерта (след n-тото гледане) пак си беше обичайното поплакване на най-силните места и една неспокойна нощ. Е, не като онази - на живо.

A comprehensive view of the artistic partnership between Scarfe and Pink Floyd. Some of the writing has appeared before but this provides a much more balanced view—informed by the passage of years and the death of many squabbles—so the text is well worth the read. Of course the star is the imagery and I am always happy to see more of Scarfe's work exposed to the world.

As a long-time Pink Floyd fan who recently saw Roger Waters in concert performing The Wall, I was excited to get my hands on this book. Gerald Scarfe manages to explain the history of his involvement as an illustrator for various Pink Floyd projects with refreshing honesty about the pitfalls and joys of his collaboration. For me as a fan of both animation and The Wall as a record album, a movie, and the recent shows, this book was a dream to read and view: the evolution of his beautiful but often disturbing and provocative images was fascinating to follow, and I loved looking at the artwork. I also enjoyed the interaction between all the major creative talents involved in the various incarnations of The Wall, and loved re-reading all the lyrics at the end of the book.

This is a great read and a visual feast for fans of music and animation, but is not so dense that the general reader could not find something of interest in there.

Libro fotografico stupendo. L'autore è il disegnatore di tutte le animazioni di The Wall, ma anche delle precedenti concepite su scala meno imponente per Wish you were here e addirittura anche per Dark side of the moon. Un genio visionario in un certo senso, che ha contribuito in modo insostituibile e decisivo a trasformare in realtà il grande affresco concept di Roger Waters. Per i fan dei Pink Floyd una lettura imprescindibile.
