This book focuses on the life and work of one of today's most exciting science fiction/fantasy writers. Discouraged by a school counselor who thought him more suited to accounting, Gaiman's career as a revolutionary graphic novelist almost didn't happen. Fortunately for his fans, he got back into writing and authored the popular and important Sandman series. This book discusses the series in detail and includes beautifully reproduced color panels that illustrate the text. Young adult readers will want to devour every word in this fascinating look at an enormously popular writer.
An interesting author is always a good read. I’ve only read one of Gaiman’s novels, which I have mixed feelings about, and this is a short YA bio, which gave me insight into his career and writing style and themes. A great introduction for newcomers to Gaiman. With brief over views of his seminal works, and biographical information, I feel like I understand this author better, and I’m not sure yet if I like his style or not. I definitely want to read more.
Three stores because I think this is a niche interest, but add a star if you’re into story, cultural Shapeshifters, cultural, influences, and art.
At a store if you’re in the target audience. And add a store if you like all the resources in the back, as I do, to go further with study in this unique author.
A good introductory book on Neil Gaiman's biography and early works. Unfortunately, author concentrates on comics and graphic novels, almost completely ignoring Gaiman's prose. The resulting view seems rather one-sided.
I'm not sure if the audience was children or if the format was meant to mimic a comic book. It should be called "Synopsis of Sandman". The majority of the book focused on this one title. A little in the beginning about how Mr. Gaiman got into comics and a little at the end about other projects and activities. Those later things are the ones I wanted to know more about.
Having read almost all of the non-fiction books about Neil Gaiman's work I didn't find this book to be all that interesting. It is clearly meant for beginners, as there is little critical thought and does not advance any new ideas.
Gaiman, who is the author of adult and young adult novels, is also a well known graphic novelist. This part of his career is the focus of this well written and illustrated biography. A great way to introduce boys to non-fiction.
