Sri. 'Mullapudi Venkata Ramana' was born in a middle class traditional family and his childhood mostly spent in a tiny village called Dhowaleswaram near Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. Ramana had one elder sister and a younger brother. It was a happy family with no troubles until his father expired when Ramana was 9 years old. This turned their family status upside down and they shifted to Chennai (called Madras in those days) for better opportunities. Ramana's mother Mrs. Adilakshmi took all the pains to raise the family in such situation. Ramana's education and career happened in Madras itself. During his study days itself, Ramana had shown penchant for literature in Telugu and inclination in writing up short but effective storyline.

During the same period, he got a good friend in 'Bapu', their friendship was unconditional and mutually expending talents as Ramana is good at write ups where as Bapu, is good at painting and caricature drawing. Soon they excelled in their talents and gave some of the most admirable Telugu films later in their life.

HE RECIEVED THE PRESTIGIOUS "RAGHUPATHI VENKIAH AWARD" from government of Andhra Pradesh, India.

This was the very first book I read outside my curriculum when I was 10 years old and hence is very special to me.
Sweet and cute, the first person narration of the kid in the book is just hilarious! Bapu's pictures add to the charm of this book and light up the whole mood even further. Still cannot forget how Budugu explains about "Seegana Pesoonamba", the first crush of the kid.
A must read for Telugu people. Trust me, you will love it !

First read this when I was a kid. Read it again a few days ago. Enjoyed it equally both times. I am a huge fan of the Bapu-Mullapudi duo. Everything that they do, be it Mullapudi's writings or Bapu's paintings, or the movies that they made together - reflect the day to day middle class telugu household so well. Budugu is a simple yet extremely interesting book that looks at the world through a child's eyes and told in a child's language. Lovely read and a must read.

This is the first book i liked too much during my childhood. That innocence, the way Ramana depicted BUDUGU's character and the way Bapu sketched Budugu made him stay close and dear to my heart. All the charterers in the story , budugu's way of charechter description is awe-inspiring. I can just say I love the book so much that whenever I feel like reading a comic, the first one that comes to my mind is Budugu :) Thanks Bapu-Ramana :)

This book is pure fun.. no one can turn a page or even cross a paragraph without smiling or laughing.. We can relate to all the characters in the story.. and the language used is also a highlight.. new words like "veepu meeda champeyatam" etc n Budugu's sweet way of pronouncing names like seegana pesunamba will take the reader back to childhood..

It's an awesome book. Can't imagine how he managed to write full length novel with main characters and conversations all in little childrens language and understable to everyone. I read it when I am 6-7years old but still remember this book and is my all time favourite.

Naughty, above average to his age thoughts and poking fun at common day to day activities, Budugu, is a lovable character.

Budugu is a quintessential detox book. It cleans your mind, at least for the time being of all things that make you worldly-wise. It awakens the long forgotten innocence that we chose to closet in a remote corner of our heart.

Budugu is an observational take on the Telugu lives of the 50s. The world when viewed through this seven year old's lens is too full of paradoxes, assumptions that no one seems to question yet comprehensible for a 7 year old like him. The observations are sharp. He points to how he's forced to go to school against his will while his uncle's is forced to stop going to 'school' and look for a job.

Budugu has a crush. See gaana pasoonamba.
Budugu has career goals. Both short term term and long term. He wants to be a jatka driver in the short term. His idea of stuffing a beedi behind his ear to be a jatka driver cracks me up every single time. He wants to graduate to be a 'boodusu railu' driver. Again, only Mullapudi can come up with such words.
Budugu loves to travel. He even goes to 'Medrasu' on a full ticket.
Budugu is fiercely opinionated. Even on things like inflation, geopolitics. Look at how he deconstructs inflation through his 'kani' savings.
Budugu even has a rule book for parents on how to raise children.

The language is experimental. Look at how Mullapudi spells 'aidhu'. The cartoons grab us by the collar and drop us in the world of budugu.

It's a book that I want to go back to every few months. Just to make myself believe that my buried innocence has an alter ego in the form of this book. Pick it up if you can read Telugu. No, pick it up anyway. Even the illustrations will be worth your time.

reading this book reminded me of my days as a toddler, listening to my grandmother's stories and not having a care about anything else. budugu is a fun filled book with several 'ideas' and advices from budugu himself! loved it. the highlight is how the book is written in toddler language, might take you few pages to get the hang of it but not so hard to understand. and the drawings in the book? beautiful.

The book has a very interesting style of narration. A 7yr old is talking to the reader explaining his life and his interpretation of the world around him.

Typos and grammatical mistakes is a feature of this book. It took me back to images from my childhood on how I used to mispronounce and misspell words.

This is a very happy book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

This book is actually based on a comic character budugu. It's got good humour and nice telugu language. But few jokes are out dated. It's a good book for kids or teenagers, not for someone if one is looking for more matured story or new angle in comedy.

Exceptional, especially for what it wanted to do. Being a fan of telugu literature, i'm ashamed that it took me so long to read this collection. Loved it. Will probably start reading some of the other books in the series.
