Book Stats

Cover: ★★★★ (Definitely a groovy outfit, love the sleeves in particular! Still though, not sure how I feel about purple-on-purple, which is the only thing that keeps this from being a perfect cover.)
Story: ★★★
Overall Rating: ★★★.5 (rounded down)
Ghostwriter: Sue Bentley
Most Memorable Part(s): Just the setting, and how it technically IS creepy to be running around in a mist-filled forest. Sort of like Clarice Starling's first run in the beginning of the film...well, y'know.

Review:
Yet another simpler story, once again just up against one goblin at a time for this series. This time, the girls need to find the mist feather, which they do inside a forest that's not supposed to be spooky, but then everything can be spooky when surrounded by mist/fog.

We meet Evie the Mist Fairy, who does a bit more in contributing to her part than just flying around--this time, she uses magic which, combined with trickery, gets the feather back from the goblin.

Still though, the story felt a bit shorter and not at all high-risk, as the goblin in question was a particular big baby compared to some of the meaner ones we've seen. Sweet and a nice addition to the series, but definitely not one of the stronger stories.

(More of Doodle's cryptic message is revealed, though.)

Evie the Mist Fairy is one of a series of books about weather Fairies.
Rachel and Kirsty are good friends and often talk about visiting Fairyland together. Rachel had been staying at Kirsty’s for a week and they’d always talk about their dreams that they had in Fairyland. However one morning, on the day of Mum’s fun day run, Rachel and Kirsty were walking in the forest when it suddenly became filled with mist. In the distance they saw a glowing light and instantly that it was Evie the Mist Fairy - they had met before when they both visited Fairyland. The three of them went in search to find the Goblin who had the magic mist feather. Without the magic mist feather Evie and the runners would continue to get lost in the fog.
Rachel and Kirsty knew that they were in safe hands when they had Evie and her magic beside them.
This book talks a lot about friendship and how to help each other. It also talks about lending moral support and delves deep into a child’s imagination and dreams – what is depicted as real and what is fantasy.
I think that this easy to read book will appeal to a higher ability reader in year 2 and children in lower KS2. I think that this book would be enjoyed as part as a free reading activity or part as guided reading. During guided reading, the children will be able to discuss the content of the book and discuss friendships, morals and courage.

Having read a 7 year old daughter I have read a fair number of these fairy books. If you read too many of them in a row (at least as an adult) they get a bit repetitive. However, I felt that the writing in Evie was much more descriptive and interesting than the last ones I'd read in this series. So either the calibre of the writing really was better or it had just been a long enough break since the last time we read one of these. :). But as a parent anytime your children find something they enjoy reading you go with it

Daisy Meadows and her fairies are my childhood. I collected so many in my youth, knowing all the fairies and their importance, and sticking with the two special girls who go to be a part of the magic.
Years ago I had to give my beautiful collection away, now still part of my childhood school where little girls are picking their favourite fairies and playing pretend. It's fun to hear stories from my old teachers telling me how over the years so many students have grabbed these books and fallen in love with the tales of two girls, Jack Frost and the fabulous glittering magic that is the fairies.
On Christmas last year, my sister surprised me with a boxset of these books, but cause you cannot collect these darlings as easily anymore. I was over the moon!
If anyone has a little one who needs a little magic in their life, wants to read and needs a big creation to be hooked on...it is Daisy Meadows!

Second set in the fairy books. This is in the following school holidays. Rachel comes to stay with Kirsty in the village of Wetherbury. Jack Frost's goblins have stolen the tail weathers from Fairyland's weather-vane rooster and making weather chaos in Fairyland and the village. The rainbow fairies are still having a positive impact - Miss 4 pointed out that the mist fairy has a violet coloured dress!

Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

I thought this was a bit of a strange choice for a weather fairy--maybe there aren't as many viable options as I would have thought. Anyhow, the premise of the book is the same as the first four in the series. I found the pursuit of the feather relatively uneventful, but the solution was fun. My child was laughing, so that's a good sign that it came together well. The illustrations continue to add a lot, particularly with the goblins. And the message at the end is building some good suspense--I'm interested to see where that part is heading.

When choosing a beginning chapter book for young readers you want something exciting, written at their level (without pandering) and a complete story. This book is just a segment of a larger story. Many of the words are too complex for the readers that it would be of interest to and there are many 'made-up' words that readers will struggle to decode. While these stories might be a draw to some readers, the interest level and readability do not make this series a good fit for many readers.

This is a massive improvement on many of the books in this series. I think the writing is a bit better than a lot of the earlier books. It’s still not great, but my six year old is determined to find out Doodles full message.

I think Doodles message is going to be that Jack Frost is going to come if his goblins fail. I think this is pretty obvious and if I were Rachel or Kristy I would
be making educated guesses on the rest of Doodle’s message. I did appreciate that very minimal fear was shown towards the goblin this book. That was pretty baller.
