Gods and Diseases Making sense of Our Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Rate this book
'Spiritual' forces aren't otherworldly or spooky things - they're the deeper emotional and psychological currents of this world. They are demystified in this book as the subtle and hidden forces that define human existence at its depths. there are many problems in today's society that cannot be resolved by the applications of reason, logic or medical science. these include child abuse, alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide. Numerous mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and phobias, are rising dramatically and there seems to be no solution in sight. In this book, David tacey argues that the solution lies in breaking free from the confines of modern medicine. Instead we must turn to spirituality, and to what tacey calls 'meaning-making', to make sense of our physical and mental wellbeing.

This demonstration of archetypal logic applied to the field of healing comes with academic credentials, yet proves wholly accessible – even if David Tacey is preaching to the converted. But while I agree with its principles, this Jung Studies 101–style primer failed to engage me. I go to books by PhDs for trained objectivity, and this one abounds in stern value judgements – which I share or I’d never have read Tacey to start with, but I see such value judgements as part of my disease. So I cringed from statements like: ‘the modern period of godless rationality is an aberration...’ An aberration from what? As much as it might suck, we didn’t arrive here by mistake. It’s religion that draws distinctions between right and wrong, not spirituality. Tacey often sounds downright prescriptive: ‘Only what the Greeks called mythos can help get close [sic] to the gods.’ Most meaningful for me was Tacey’s account of his own journey and background.
