I chose to read 'Crash' a story of Poddy Because it was written by William Taylor, a New Zealand author and the cover of the book looked exiting.
I was exited to read a New Zealand book to see what it would be like because i have never read one before. I was going to get Margret Maye Book because she is well known but i wanted to read something different.
My favourite character in this book is 'Poddy' or Patrick. He has downs syndrome and everyone mocked him but mostly just his big brother Jack. Throughout the story Poddy overcame his fears of strangers and the darkness. At the end of the story when Poddy had saved Jack and his dad, Jack started to appriciate his brother for who he is.
My favourite Quote from the book was "I love you bro" said by Poddys Brother Jack in the hospital. Jack hated his brother and was ashamed of him but by the end he loved him so much just like brothers should.
I learn't that people withe downs syndrome are good at doing major activities by themselves. Poddy did the same thing as i would do at the time so i would say he is just as smart as everyone else. I will never under estimate disabled people ever because they are just as good at things as me.

I have read this book to a number of classes at both year 5/6 and year 7/8 level in New Zealand. Most enjoyed the story and loved Poddy and the realistic dialogue and language that William Taylor uses. However, some struggled with the split timeframe, as the author alternates chapters between background, told as one narrative, and the "Crash" as the main narrative.
In my most recent reading to a class, I had some girls in tears at the conclusion...Tears of positive emotion, I should add.
