Hugo Pratt

Internationally known for Corto Maltese, a series of adventure comics first published in Italy and France between 1967 and 1991, Pratt is regarded as a pioneer of the literary graphic novel.
Born in Rimini, Italy, Pratt spent his childhood in Venice in a cosmopolitan family environment. In 1937, ten-years old Hugo moved with his parents to Ethiopia, East Africa, following the Italian occupation of the country. Pratt's father eventually died as a prisoner of war in 1942. Hugo himself and his mother spent some time in a British prison camp in Africa, before being sent back to Venice. This childhood experiences shaped Pratt's fascination with military uniforms, machineries and settings, a visual constant in most of his adult works.
As a young artist in post-war Italy, Pratt was part of the so-called 'Venice Group', which also included cartoonists Alberto Ongaro, Mario Faustinelli. Their magazine Asso di Picche, launched in 1945, mostly featured adventure comics.
In 1949 Pratt moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he worked for various local publishers and interacted with well-known Argentine cartoonists, most notably Alberto Breccia and Solano López, while also teaching at the Escuela Panamericana de Arte. During this period he produced his first notable comic books: Sgt. Kirk and Ernie Pike, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld; Anna nella jungla, Capitan Cormorant and Wheeling, as a complete author.
From the summer of 1959 to the summer of 1960, Pratt lived in London drawing war comics by British scriptwriters for Fleetway Publications. He returned to Argentina for a couple more years, then moved back to Italy in 1962. Here he started collaborating with the comics magazine Il Corriere dei Piccoli, for which he adapted several classics, including works by Robert Louis Stevenson.
In 1967, Hugo Pratt and entrepreneur Florenzo Ivaldi created the comics magazine Il Sergente Kirk, named after one of Pratt's original characters. Pratt's most famous work, Una ballata del mare salato (1967, The Ballad of the Salty Sea) was serialised in the pages of this magazine. The story can be seen as one of the first modern graphic novels. It also introduced Pratt's best known character, mariner and adventurer Corto Maltese. Corto became the protagonist of its own series three years later in the French comics magazine Pif gadget. Pratt would continue releasing new Corto Maltese books every few years until 1991. Corto's stories are set in various parts of the world, in a given moment in the first three decades of the 20th century. They often tangently deal with real historical events or real historical figures. The series gave Pratt international notoriety, being eventually translated into fifteen languages.
Pratt's other works include Gli scorpioni del deserto (1969-1992), a series of military adventures set in East Africa during WWII, and a few one-shots published for Bonelli's comic magazine Un Uomo Un'Avventura ('One Man One Adventure'), most notably the short story Jesuit Joe (1980, The Man from the Great North). Χθες αγόρασα το τρομερό αυτό πολεμικό κόμικ και σήμερα το διάβασα μονορούφι, χωρίς να πάρω ανάσα. Απορώ γιατί τόσο καιρό όχι μόνο δεν το είχα διαβάσει, αλλά δεν το είχα καν αγοράσει! Ξέρω ότι έπαιζα με τη φωτιά, γιατί δεν θα ήταν παράλογο κάποια στιγμή να εξαντλούνταν, και μετά τρέχα γύρευε. Τέλος πάντων, το καθήκον μου το έκανα, και πόσο χαίρομαι γι'αυτό! Είναι χαλαρά ένα από τα πιο ωραία κόμικ που είχα την τύχη να διαβάσω.
Είναι η δεύτερη δημιουργία του Hugo Pratt που διαβάζω μετά το καταπληκτικό "The Man From The Great North" που απόλαυσα τον περασμένο Δεκέμβριο (το "Κόρτο Μαλτέζε: Εκουατόρια" δεν το μετράω, φυσικά, γιατί είναι άλλων δημιουργών), και δηλώνω ακόμα περισσότερο μαγεμένος με το σχέδιο και την ιστορία. Ο τύπος έδωσε ρέστα. Το ασπρόμαυρο σχέδιο με τα τρομερά αυτά μελάνια, είναι καλύτερο οφθαλμόλουτρο ακόμα και από αυτό που μπορεί να απολαύσει κανείς σε μια παραλία γυμνιστών (εντάξει, που λέει ο λόγος!).
Ο Pratt κατάφερε να με ταξιδέψει στην έρημο της Λιβύης, ανάμεσα σε Άγγλους, Ιταλούς και Αφρικανούς στρατιώτες και μισθοφόρους, ενώ με ιδιαίτερα ρεαλιστικό τρόπο αποτύπωσε το όλο σκληρό και κυνικό σκηνικό ενός βρώμικου πολέμου (όχι ότι υπάρχει καθαρός πόλεμος, αλλά κουβέντα να γίνεται), καθώς και ορισμένα πολύ ιδιαίτερα τοπία, γεμάτα άγρια ομορφιά. Γνώρισα πολύ ενδιαφέροντες χαρακτήρες, χόρτασα δράση και "εξωτικά" σκηνικά, και πήρα μια ιδέα για το συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι του Β' Π.Π. στην Αφρική, που είναι γενικά σχετικά άγνωστο στους περισσότερους. Περιττό να πω ότι η ατμόσφαιρα είναι φοβερή και ότι το κόμικ θα ξετρελάνει τους λάτρεις των κλασικών πολεμικών περιπετειών.

This is one of Pratt's best creations. The script and design tie together in a superb and flawless way, Hugo's ink is perfect in black and white and the character development must be learned in any classroom that deals with the 9th art.
A war story in chapters that, without being overly gory or dramatic, sucks you in the madness that is war better than many other comic books. An easy 5/5.

Vähän semmoista älykkäämpää Korkkariahan tämä oli. Ja muistan pitäneeni tästä joskus todella paljon. Nyt en enää niin paljoa.

"Pustynne Skorpiony" - podobnie jak cykl o Corto Maltese - powstawały na przestrzeni kilku dekad. O ile można się domyślić (choć pewności nie ma), że Corto jest zbiorem zamkniętym, wszystko wskazuje na to, że przygody polskiego żołnierza mogły być jeszcze kontynuowane, ale przerwała je śmierć autora. Dostajemy pięć zeszytów z porządnym posłowiem, a więc tym, czego tak bardzo brakowało w poszczególnych tomach o przygodach marynarza w wydaniu Egmontu.
Po trzech pierwszych przygodach byłbym w stanie dać najwyższą notę. Idealnie przemyślana fabuła okraszona fantastyczną, bardzo precyzyjną kreską i tym, co w jego grafikach uwielbiam, czyli bardzo oryginalnym gospodarowaniem czernią. Z czasem dzieje się jednak to, co w historiach o Maltese. Późniejsze tomy to już zupełnie inna (choć tak samo rozpoznawalna) kreska - trochę niechlujna, ignorująca tła i zostawiająca ogrom miejsca dla dialogowych dymków. Nawet jeśli historie trzymają poziom, wrażenie ogólne mniejsze.
Pratt jest chyba jedynym autorem, u którego nagromadzenie tekstu jest dla mnie w pełni akceptowalne, ale zasiadając do lektury, warto mieć na uwadze, że to rzecz wymagająca cierpliwości i skupienia. Trochę jak przygody Corto, ale obdarte z całej tej melancholii i oniryzmu. Dla fanów Pratta must have

Llevaba tiempo entregado a Hugo Pratt con Corto Maltés y tenía pendiente unirme a Los Escorpiones del Desierto. Solo lamento no haberlo hecho antes. Pratt mantiene la habilidad para enamorarnos con aventuras románticas, esta vez en el marco de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en su frente de África. Libia, Egipto, Etiopía... son escenarios que se prestan más a esta visión aventura que otros lugares de Europa o Asia donde la crueldad del conflicto se reveló descarnadamente.
Una guerra, un tesoro, una mujer misteriosa como nos suele presentar Hugo Pratt son los elementos de esta gran historia que ha valido tanto la pena leer. Ahora, a por el segundo.

Priča prati nekoliko vojnika specijalne postrojbe britanske vojske u sjevernoj africi za vrime drugog sv rata. Price su uglavnom špijunsko akciske, dobro ispričane i prekrasno nacrtane. Velika pažnja posvećena je detaljima vozila i aviona. Za razliku od Corta, koji se ovdje spominje, priče su realnističnijeg ugođaja, bez mistike koja karakterizira Cortove avanture.

Una nueva experiencia introduciéndome en la Novela Gráfica con esta obra de Pratt, recomendado... muy divertido y entretenido momento en el cual no sé si tenia la sensación de estar leyendo o viendo una película dentro de mi cabeza.

Esta novela grafica muestra la crudeza de la guerra y lo oscilante que son los instantes entre la vida y la muerte para estos personajes, es una lectura agil y amena aunque me costo conectar con los personajes hasta el final de la novela.

Muy bueno, la trama tiene un gran ritmo, existen personajes de muchos bandos involucrados durante la segunda guerra mundial en África, las ilustraciones son muy buenas.
