DUPLICATE DO NOT USE-Growing at the Speed of Life Enriched: A Year in the Life of My First Kitchen Garden

Rate this book
Featuring more than 30 original videos and cooking demonstrations! Award-winning chef and former “Galloping Gourmet” Graham Kerr literally starts from the ground up in this engaging, inspiring, and highly informative introduction to the joys of the kitchen garden—and the pleasures of the table that start with growing your own food.   In this amplified eBook edition of Growing at the Speed of Life, which includes the complete text of the original edition and features more than 30 videos, Graham takes us through the first year in his kitchen garden, sharing the lessons learned and the wisdom that he’s received from his circle of local knowledge providers. From digging up his “south lawn” and putting together a green house to planting his first seeds and harvesting and sharing his first crop with others in need, Kerr provides a whirlwind tour through his gardening adventures. Along the way, he profiles 60 common—and not-so-common but readily available—garden vegetables, fruits, and herbs with useful advice and recommendations for care and feeding. But once the harvest is done, Kerr “gallops” into the kitchen to offer guidance on the best cooking methods to create appealing dishes in his inimitable and spirited style. He includes more than 100 recipes—along with a dozen demonstration videos—that are as simple and elegant as they are healthful. Plus, his handy References and Resources section features links to Kerr’s recommended suppliers and other websites of interest.  Graham Kerr is an internationally known culinary and television personality, award-winning author, and advocate of living and eating creatively and healthfully. Universally recognized as the “Galloping Gourmet” and pioneer amongst television chefs, he has received numerous accolades, including an honorary doctorate in Culinary Nutrition from Johnson & Wales University, Rhode Island, an honorary life membership in the American Dietetic Association, induction into the American Culinary Federation Hall of Fame, an Emmy nomination, and a James Beard Foundation Award.  He is the author of almost thirty books, including the Julia Child Cookbook Award-winner, Graham Kerr’s Minimax Cookbook. Over the past several years, Kerr has partnered with health organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions to promote healthful eating. He has developed programs in association with Premera Blue Cross, the Washington State Restaurant Association, and been a guest lecturer at Bastyr University and Ball State Medical School. He has given keynote addresses at various meetings of the American Dietetic Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Culinary Federation among others. He lives, cooks, and gardens in Washington state with—and for—his wife, Treena.

Graham has been a 'food man' since his fifteenth birthday,

Raised in the European Hotel business and following his national service in the British Army he was the General Manager of the Royal Ascot Hotel at age 27.

He moved to New Zealand as the Chief Catering Advisor to their Air Force and, in 1959/60 began his public life in broadcasting and television.

His wife Treena began to produce the shows behind the scenes until, in 1968, following a successful TV series on prime time in Australia, she took over as the formal producer, for which she earned two Emmy nominations as daytime 'Producer of the Year'.

Their Galloping Gourmet show was shown worldwide and was credited for creating 'culinary entertainment' as we know it today.
In 1970 they suffered a major traffic accident during a production tour that abruptly ended the series. Graham and his family set out to 'regain resilience' by sailing 24,000miles in a two year period in their own sailboat.
They have been residents since 1973, mostly in the Pacific Northwest where they became US citizens in 1981.

The Kerr's made over 1,800 TV shows and segments, several thousand radio shows and written 30 books, selling over 14 million copies worldwide.

In 1974/75 they made news in their public announcement of their faith in Jesus Christ and from that time on devoted themselves to the general idea that 'habits that harm can become resources that heal'.

Starting in 2009, Graham ‘discovered’ a deep and ongoing interest in ecology. This interest began in the backyard of his small local church. “It was there that I began to gain my interest in resilience and mankind’s urgent need to do what he can do to do less harm to this amazingly creative environment”

Kerr's autobiography Flash Of Silver...The Leap That Changed My World was published in 2015.

The Kerrs had three children together. Treena Kerr died in 2015.

Full disclosure: I've been a fan of Graham Kerr since watching the Galloping Gourmet with my Mom when I was little. His transformation from heart-attack-on-a-plate food to delicious healthier fare following the illness of his wife Treena has been genuine, helpful, and even inspiring. Now, as he adds vegetable gardening to the mix, he attacks it with his usual galloping style and humor. The book is clear, thorough without being overwhelming, and includes lots of his clever illustrations. Very enjoyable and instructive. It would serve as a great reference for anyone starting their first veggie garden or looking to improve their current one for next year!

If you are a fan of Graham Kerr, then you will enjoy this book. It is kind of a garden 'primer' and even though I'm not sure the use of that word is adequate or even correct, that's what I see this as.
IF you are absolutely new to gardening, you might find some useful information. A large part of the book is also dedicated to recipes (100) using the garden bounty. I skimmed through, and made note of recipes I want to try later.

This book was ok. It's obvious that the author enjoys cranking out as many books as possible, while the material might not be very content heavy. There really aren't any secrets in it that cant be found on the internet, it's basically just a "hey go for it and plant a huge garden and see what happens autobiography".

Good, humourous introduction to vegetable gardening. I've since disocovered that absolutely everything on gardening seems to be on-line, making books like this less necessary. Kerr, however, has a nice comic flair, and it's interesting to see what he's up to these days.

I started a larger garden because I read this book. I recall watching him years ago and his approach has softened, but his enthusiasm is still strong (no alcohol, low fat). I'd love to meet him if Kerr ever visited NYC.

Great notes about planting a wide variety of veggies and herbs. Well worth reading cover to cover once... I'll be using this as a reference for a long time.
