When the Governor of New Jersey invites Nicky Fifth an T-Bone to serve as Unofficial Junior Ambassadors, how can they say no; especially, when no other Governors have called. They accept the job and find the best New Jersey places to share with other kids. From the State House to Wild West City to Lucy the Elephant, get ready for another… Garden State Adventure! This book includes a 36 page Passport that readers can have stamped as they follow Nicky and T-Bone's adventures. This book is part of the acclaimed series that has been named to the New Jersey Battle of the Books three times.
I’m giving this book four stars because the author cleverly worked in a good cause... go to ryansquest.org for more information. This book is one in a series about two boys who take day rips around New Jersey to learn about cool and historic places. I like it because I learned a lot about some places I’ve never been to in my home state.
Another book in this series that the social studies supervisor in my district bestowed upon our classroom. Once again we follow the travels of Nicky and T-Bone around New Jersey as they discover the gems that make this state wonderful.
The formula is entrenched, and it works. I am a fan of the series.
No, this is not award-winning literature. The lazy writing continues; "1970s" is written "1970's", using the ubiquitously incorrect apostrophe. There are other errors. There is no way to travel from Story Book Land (not Storybook Land) to Lucy the Elephant in 10 minutes. That was twice stated.
The problem with books like this one is that they become quickly out-of-date when businesses change through no fault of the author. It was nice to see Millville highlighted (I live here). While I enjoyed Oliver's Twist (even if it wasn't really that good), that restaurant (and the one that followed it) is out of business. The book was published just two years ago. That was not the joint to highlight about Millville, Jim's Lunch is and has decades of resilience to help keep these things from happening.
While I wasn't big fan of highlighting Ryan's Quest since it doesn't really fit in well with the New Jersey travel, I think I see an opportunity as to how to use it. It's interesting, I have been stimulated to recreate several projects I used to use in my classroom that I somehow got away from in recent years since reading these books.
"A lot" was properly written here (unlike in the Garden State adventures) although "alright" was still used. Qualifying unique as "very unique" is wrong. Alas . . . unique does not get qualified anymore than pregnancy does: you're not a little pregnant and something isn't very unique. ;). I also note that Millville was not included in the scavenger hunt. I think that is most unfortunate. I am a big fan of scavenger hunts and even have some based in Millville.
I expect to read this with my students this coming academic year.
This is a great book to get kids interested in doing local day trips in NJ. I love how special guest young authors are included at the end as well as information on charity for Ryan's Quest.
