Frederick Stoneham thoroughly enjoys the life he leads as one of London's most disreputable rogues. When his father arranges for him to wed Lady Eleanor Ashton, he believes his decadent lifestyle can carry on uninterrupted. After all, he remembers Eleanor to be plain and timid—not the kind of wife who will demand attention or insist he leave his mistress. But Frederick has a change of heart when he sees the striking beauty Eleanor has become.
Can she reform him?
Eleanor is stunned to discover she is to wed Frederick Stoneham—the man she has secretly pined after for years, despite his reputation. When Frederick's former mistress tells her a horrible lie, Eleanor feels betrayed. But Frederick's persistence—and a passion that refuses to be ignored—are slowly melting Eleanor's resolve. Now Frederick must prove to Eleanor that his days as a rake are in the past and that she is the only woman he will ever love.
As a child, Kristina Cook took her nose out of a book only long enough to take a ballet class (or five) each week. Not much has changed since then, except she’s added motherhood to the mix and now enjoys penning her own novels as much as reading everybody else’s. Before turning her hand to historical romance, Kristina did graduate work at Columbia University and wrote grant proposals for some of New York City's top cultural institutions. After the birth of her second child, she decided to finally write that novel she'd always wanted to write. The rest, as they say, is history. Kristina lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.
This book had potential. Certainly the beginning caught this readers attention. However it was not long before the characters and the plot began to bore.
Read it in one sitting! Now, it may be odd to some that all of a sudden all I'm reading is historical/regency romance. My mind has not been in the best state lately. I'm stressed to the point of feeling frantic and trapped, and I don't want to lose myself in my usual emotional books, or indeed any book that makes me think particularly hard. So romance it is, and I console myself that the dress and society descriptions somehow make it all better.
I need escapism, and these books make me feel better. They are a rare delight, and this one was particularly good. The romance was believable, the love scenes never really going outside the time period. The build up was frustrating, but in a good way. For something I picked up out of a bargain bin at the low low price of $3.47, I can't say enough good things about this book.
My first time reading a romance book. I mean, that specific type of romance. Romance for the sake of romance. Well... I guess, I got what I asked for and won't read that type of romance again, thank you very much.
The genre has it's fans, I just wasn't one of them.
I got a little bored in parts of this book. There were a few places when nothing was happening. I didn't particularly like some of the characters either - there were no really jolly people. This story is not the best in the series. A pity because I really liked the others.
75% of the way through, I realized I didn't care if they ended up together or not. I admit I skimmed the remainder of the book, and even the epilogue managed to be tedious.
