Since 1989, Stephen Thrower (author of FAB Press's acclaimed Beyond Terror) has edited one of the smartest and most stylish underground magazines on alternative, cult and art cinema: Eyeball. Hugely influential, Eyeball kick-started the now wide-spread admiration for Euro-horror. Now every issue of Eyeball is available in a truly eye-catching book, along with a vast amount of new material! Contents include: interviews with Alejandro Jodorowsky, Michele Soavi, Andrzej Zulawski, Ulli Lommel, Paul Morrissey, Gaspar Noë, Gary Sherman. Features on Argento, Fulci, Avati, Cronenberg, Freda, Warhol, Antonioni - and a cavalcade of ascerbic, thoughtful or just plain twisted reviews from a host of top writers.
Amongst its many delights, this 396-page book also includes all-new reviews of films such as Autopsia, Bad, Cannibal Apocalypse, Death Bed: The Bed That Eats, Don't Deliver Us From Evil, Duffer, The Etruscan Kills Again, Knife of Ice, Murder By Design, Night of the Devils, Pink Narcissus, Plot of Fear, Rabid Dogs, Terror Express and L'uomo, la donna, la bestia. All this and much, much more makes Eyeball Compendium essential reading for cult movie fans everywhere!
3.5 stars, mainly because it wasn't what I was hoping. On the one hand, this book is a tribute to the film Possession by Andrzej Zulawski, as it is merited several essays throughout. On the other hand it's a book cobbled together from the best of Eyeball Magazine, with plenty of reviews and essays that like to raise the station of Euro-horror films with terms like Lacanian Theory and non-diegetic Blues Music, whilst the review authors mention off-hand that they were tripping on LSD while watching the movie. As a guide to the best of such challenging movies, it's a good resource. As an entertaining read for the lovers of such movies, pretty much only the limited presences of Ramsey Campbell and Tim Lucas are there to recommend it.
This book is a collection of pieces from the "Eyeball" magazine and is a wonderful reference point for films of the 'sex & horror, art and exploitation" variety. There are tons of interesting articles on film makers and films, interviews and reviews. I read some great interviews with some of my favorite film makers and found many more interesting movies to check out. Worth every last penny!
