'I particularly like the notes that accompany the demonstrations....tips for creating the big brush skies and all those elemental techniques that help so much to build pictures of interest and diversity. I recommend you to buy this book and keep it close to your armoury of paints and brushes...' Leisure Painter
At this moment in time this has to be quite simply the best watercolour painting book in my entire collection. It was given to me as part of a Christmas present by my family, and it came with Terry Harrison’s Complete Brush Set For Watercolours, and the training DVD The Terry Harrison Collection. The book runs to 128 pages and the first half explains how to get the best out of Terry Harrison’s
Terry uses the introduction to set the scene for the whole book where he talks about his favourite subject being the traditional landscape and how he is inspired by artists such as Constable and Turner, Roland Hilder and Alwyn Crawshaw. Terry talks about his journey and the lessons that he has learned on the way which are enlightening and I have since found to be incredibly wise words. In the Choosing Your Equipment, Using The Brushes, and Techniques sections Terry describes 11 of his brushes in some detail, the materials you will need to complete the demonstrations in his book, his palette, various watercolour paint mixes, and techniques you can use in your painting.
Examples of Terry’s finished painting’s are peppered throughout these initial exercises and these cleverly reinforce just how these techniques can be applied in practice.
There are six demonstrations to work through in the book.
As you work your way through each of the demonstrations they increase in their level of difficulty, and to help the student with this Terry has added additional steps to make things a little easier. Throughout the book Terry has included many photographs of his original paintings and each is described with how he arrived at the composition and he also points out many of the techniques that he’s used in his paintings that you are able to learn from this book.
This is an amazing book, and it has had a huge influence on my own painting style and has now become a well thumbed point of reference for me. I have learned so much from it because it’s literally crammed from beginning to end with so many simple and well thought out time-saving hints and tips. Terry doesn’t hold anything back in this book, as in his many other publications he unselfishly shares his insights, years of knowledge and know-how so that his readers can learn from his broad experience.
If you already know the basics, have a feel for watercolour, and want to move on to something that is slightly more challenging, where you can learn a wide range of new hints, tips and techniques that can improve your painting then this book would be perfect for you. It’s helped me produce some beautiful looking paintings and I’m sure that even the most advanced watercolourist will be able to gain a vast amount of knowledge from this book which they could put to good use in their own watercolour projects.
