Sono passati cinquant'anni da quando Cesare Maestri e Toni Egger raggiunsero per primi la vetta del Cerro Torre, una montagna da sempre mitica per tutti gli alpinisti. Ma durante la discesa Egger perse la vita, e da allora il clamore sullo loro impresa non si è mai spento tra coloro che li acclamano tuttora e chi, invece, non crede che siano arrivati in cima. About the author

Reinhold Messner (born September 17, 1944) is an Italian mountaineer and explorer from South Tyrol, often cited as the greatest mountain climber of all time. He is renowned for making the first solo ascents of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen and for being the first climber to ascend all fourteen "eight-thousanders" (peaks over 8,000 metres above sea level). He is the author of at least 63 books (in German, 1970–2006), many of which have been translated into other languages.

Lotta fra titani: Cesare Maestri e Reihold Messner. L'uno per difendere, contro ogni logica, la sua prima sul Cerro Torre, l'altro per cercare la verità tramite interviste, ragionamenti, storia dell'alpinismo, analisi dei materiali.
Il libro è questo, non racconta con pathos un'arrampicata, non descrive paesaggi, non emoziona. Racconta di un uomo testardo, presuntuoso, acido, rancoroso, ossessionato dal Torre, e lo racconta con umana comprensione: però no, Maestri e Egger nel 1959 in cima non sono arrivati.

Ho trovato un Messner sorprendentemente umano e modesto, un Maestri prevedibilmente acido e presuntuoso (una trasmissione satirica di rai regione lo chamava, anni fa, "il Cesare dei Cesari, il Maestro dei Maestri"), ho incontrato nomi di alpinisti che stimo, altri che conosco, compreso Ermanno Salvaterra che sale e scende dal Cerro Torre come dalle scale di casa.
Mi è sembrato un libro molto interessante, ma non so quanto possa coinvolgere chi nulla sa della polemica che dura da quasi 60 anni, non conosce i protagonisti, non conosce il ruolo di Cesarino Fava detto Patacorta, non sa come sia fatta una piccozza da ghiaccio o fatica a indicare il Torre su una carta geografica. Non è un libro che consiglio a tutti, nemmeno a chi cerca un racconto di avventura, le mie sono stelle montanare non stelle letterarie :-)

Questo è il secondo libro di Messner che ho preferito. Reinhold cerca di svelare il mistero che avvolge una delle montagne più difficili da scalare che si possono trovare sulla nostra bella terra. Ad oggi sono ancora molto pochi coloro possono vantare di aver scalato questa vetta... il primo che vantò l'impresa fu Cesare Maestri... ma qualcosa non torna, al ritorno di Maestri si annusa l'intrigo e sarà Messner a svelare il mistero.... si vi piacciono le avventure e i misteri questo libro fa assolutamente per voi.

In questo libro Messner ci racconta una pagina di alpinismo molto controversa, di quando l'alpinismo era ancora una cosa per eroi. La descrizione dei fatti è, come sempre nei suoi libri, molto ben fatta e argomentata. L'unica cosa che non mi è piaciuta è stata la continua vena polemica nei confronti di Cesare Maestri.

This novel has all the ingredients of a great thriller fiction story such as rivalry, danger, suspense, death, competition,..., lies, polemics, but this book is not a fiction story, it is a non-fiction story based on real people and reality. This book introduced me and the readers to the small and unknown world of extreme mountain climbing during much of the last century. The author is himself a mountaineer and a Historian of mountaineering.

The book is about the 1959 deadly escalation of the Cerro Torre Mountain in Argentina by 2 of the greatest Italian extreme Mountaineers in History. The author brilliantly develops the characters of all those who participated in the escalation and of the majors mountaineers of the world at the time. The author gave us a brief biography of the extreme mountaineers, the community, the rivalry, the lies and polemics surrounding some of the achievements to give us a prelude of the psychic of each of the 3 protagonists of the 1959 escalation. The author describes the mental spirit of the organization, the traveling to Argentina and to the location of the mountain and the escalation. He describes it so realistically as if the readers were themselves escalating the mountain with the Mountaineers. The second part of the book is about the debates and polemics surrounding whether the 2 Italians really arrived to the top or not. The author details for us how a passion coupled with ambitions can lead to obsession causing death.

Whether or not you are a mountaineer, a mother nature lover, an extreme sport athlete, you will enjoy reading this book like I did.

Come sempre la scrittura di Messner incanta, affascina, evoca... E riesce a ricostruire con lucidità precisione, dettaglio e rispetto uno dei caso irrisolti (e irrisolvibili) dell'alpinismo.
